Multi-Vehicle Collision Backs Up Traffic on U.S. 101 Near Bayside Cutoff
A traffic collision is backing up northbound Highway 101 near the Bayside Cutoff this evening, according to the California Highway Patrol. Around 5:16 p.m., CHP dispatchers began receiving reports of a multi-vehicle collision in the northbound lanes at the Bayside Cutoff. First reports state two vehicles were involved, but later reports suggested three vehicles—and possibly a fourth—may have been part of the crash. One vehicle was described as a small gray sedan.
CHP reported at least one northbound lane was blocked, with glass scattered in the roadway. Caltrans QuickMap shows traffic backing up from the Bayside Cutoff to Indianola. Emergency medical services were initially requested for possible minor injuries but now it is being reported as no injuries.
By about 5:27 p.m., fire and medical personnel were on scene, and CHP reported that vehicles were no longer blocking the roadway. But motorists were advised to expect delays in the area during the response.
Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

Well, that was 50 million dollars well spent!
The interchange is at Indianola Cutoff, not Bayside.
IMHO:
All the ‘same project’.
Completion of the Indianola Cutoff calls for removing the cross-highway traffic at the Bayside road.
Hence… no more southbound 101 traffic going to Bayside Road/Old Arcata road.
Either take Old Arcata road straight from Arcata… or go further south and take the ‘completed’ Indianola project exit… to Old Arcata Rd… and then go north to Bayside/Jacoby Creek.
Entire 101 project is supposed to eliminate most of the other cross-highway traffic too. You can see the ‘turnaround lanes’ being constructed at the Jacobs crossing. (Murray Field).
CalTrans hasn’t finished the Indianola project. Post below… wonders why ?
Removing the medians is part of the project, but they can’t do it until the Indianola thing is finished.
When I lived near 3 Corners and went to Humboldt State, I never got on the Highway, just took Old Arcata Road. Or took the bus when it went that way.
I agree it was well spent without the sarcasm. Lives will be saved. No more crossing two lanes of hwy traffic at sea level trying to time the exit or crossover. It was the worst exit on all of highway 101. Bayside’s next
IMHO:
A question for CalTrans:
So… why hasn’t the Indianola Cutoff Project been finished ?
Appears that everything has been completed… except for signage (?) on the north exit lane (101 to Indianola Rd) and the southbound entry lane (Indianola Rd to 101) ?
That will enable you to close the Bayside ‘cross-freeway’ traffic.
They’re chipping away at it.
Bayside is where accidents usually happen, as it is. It’s hard to gauge time and distance properly, so the leap-frogs decide to hop across and get destroyed in the process. That spot is notorious for wet visibility issues and dense ground fog on any given day. Not so much Indianola, and hopefully, people don’t launch off the side of the new overpass.
Before they closed the Indianola intersection, it had more accidents than Bayside Rd. It is a given that when Indianola closed, more accidents would happen at Bayside. I will be relieved when they finally open Indianola to freeway access via on/off ramps.
They hit it hard during the summer. They cannot work in the rain.
The scoreboard adds another few victims – I’ve been commenting since the beginning of the Indianola project that there will be consequences until it’s fully finished!
-1 for what? The truth…
I drove past the accident right after it happened this morning. It’s past the new overpass. The CHP had road flares out and the right lane closed.
This morning???
You can change the highway all you want. The problem is people are drive like idiots in the cities down below. People have no consideration for others. They get right up on your ass and cut you off as they speed in out between other vehicles. I have been driving 101 for well over 40 yrs. The problem has never been the road it’s the people that drive like idiots. I see people all the time driving and talking on their phones, reading and even putting on makeup. The biggest problem is speeding and rude people riding others asses.
