A fallen tree created major traffic problems on Highway 101 early Thursday afternoon near the Highway 162 exit, blocking three lanes of travel and leaving only a narrow path open for drivers, according to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page. The hazard was reported at about 1:08 p.m., with dispatch notes describing a “tree across three lanes.”

Scanner traffic indicated that the northbound number 2 lane was just barely passable, allowing limited movement through the area.

At 1:24 p.m., an officer on scene reported setting up one-way traffic control while a tow or tree-clearing crew responded.

Motorists in the Covelo/Longvale area should expect delays on both the northbound and southbound sides of the highway as crews work to remove the obstruction.

The backup appears to be just a bit south of the Moss Cove rest area, a mile south of the 162 intersection.
