Fire Destroys Home in Garberville Early This Morning

A fast-moving fire destroyed a small white house on Knights Lane, at the south end of Garberville, early this morning.

The blaze was reported around 12:45 a.m. when nearby resident Shawn Crawley noticed an unusual glow in the sky.

“It looked like the sun was coming up,” Crawley said. “I immediately called 911 and started jogging towards the trailer park.”

Before firefighters arrived, Crawley first pounded on the door of the home on fire but there was no one inside, he said. And then he tried to make sure the neighboring residents were awake and aware of the danger. “I pounded on…their neighbors’ doors just to make sure they knew and were prepared,” he said.

Despite the rainy night, the fire spread with alarming speed. “The structure was a loss pretty quickly,” Crawley said. “It spread incredibly fast.”

No injuries were reported, but the house was completely destroyed. Fire crews worked to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby residences.

We’ve reached out to Garberville Fire Protection District whose volunteer members were there along with Cal Fire fighting the flames. Remember to support your local fire departments whose crews train and fundraise so they are there to protect their communities.

UPDATE 2:11 p.m.: The Redway Fire Protection District posted more information. They stated,

At 12:48 Redway fire was paged out for an agency assist to Garberville for a structure fire.
On scene were Garberville fire, Redway fire, Phillipsville fire and Cal-fire.
Upon arrival the occupants were out, home was fully involved as well as a vehicle parked next to the structure. A second structure sustained moderate damage but was saved by personnel at the scene. PG & E were called due to live powerlines down at the scene. All personnel worked together to prevent further damage to the surrounding structures and area.

First, I would like to give a huge thank you to Shawn Crawley for noticing the fire and then running to notify the neighbors as best as he could. Second, I am truly very sorry that the home was a total loss but thank God no one was inside. A hat tip to the Garberville Fire Protection District volunteer members and Cal Fire for keeping the flames spreading to nearby homes preventing a bigger disaster.
