Eureka High School Hosting ‘We Are Still Here’ California Native Day Celebration September 24

This press release was “done by student as part of a Civics Engagement Project”:

On September 24th, Eureka High School will be hosting an event for California Native American Day in the gym. This celebration will feature Supaman, a famous Native American singer and dancer, as well as The Kibby Family and emcee Vincent Felyz for the night event. This event is made to share culture with the community while simultaneously celebrating California Native American Day.

This event was made possible by Shawna Morales, Melissa Defanbaugh, and all the others who assisted at the California Native Day Committee meetings. Admission is free to the public during the night show. There will be vendors, performances, a meet-and-greet, and a raffle. California Native Day is sponsored by Northern California Indian Development Council (NCIDC), United Indian Health Services (UIHS), Blue Lake Rancheria, Eureka City Schools, Eureka High School’s Native Club, Indian Education Parent Advisory Committee, The Wiyot Tribe, and Frybread Love.

This project includes planning, renting, networking, advertising, and overall participation. To prepare for this event, we had to order a stage, tables, and chairs. If we wanted it to be entertaining, we also needed performers and vendors. Shawna Morales and I went around the Salmon Festival asking for free vendors to set up, and performers were booked later by her. The overall goal is to make this event a success and as enjoyable as possible—we want our community to both learn and take pleasure in Native American culture (break down barriers).

In past years, students have said they enjoyed the day event (for students only), even though they were required to go. Most students expected it to be unfascinating, but many games involved active participation from the crowd (with prizes). The night show was an even bigger hit.
