A new wildfire dubbed the Pond Fire broke out Friday Wednesday afternoon north of Laytonville, first reported around 3:40 p.m. near Mile Marker 73.16 along Highway 101, just north of Longvale in Mendocino County. Traffic is moving slow in both directions, according to Caltrans QuickMap.

Highway 101 has been reduced to one lane in the area, creating delays for motorists traveling through the corridor. Firefighters and emergency responders are on scene.

By 3:47 p.m., the fire was estimated at approximately one acre, burning with a moderate rate of spread, according to initial scanner traffic. But by 3:52 p.m., the fire was being reported as 10 acres.

Air attack resources, including at least one air tanker, appear to be en route to the fire, according to FlightRadar tracking data.  Watch the fire on the remote AlertCalifornia cam by clicking here.

It is on the north end of the first 4 lane that you come to, 4 mi north of Laytonville. Just south of Black Oak Ranch.

It’s not very close to Laytonville town. And there are lots of resources on it. Stay aware but don’t get too edgy! Yeah I saw it about 4:00 p.m. drove right past it into town…. Miles away and even now it’s only 20 acres. But yes things can blow up so stay aware!!
Oh yeah not much wind down here either so that’s good

Friday ? We just drove through that around that time today. It was 20 ft tall 60 ft wide. But looked like it was going to take off very fast. Started right on the side of the highway. But even driving past it you could feel the heat of the fire through the window and door of the car
