The driver who died in Monday night’s fiery crash outside Fiesta Café in Eureka was a woman, the Eureka Police Department has confirmed. The information, first reported by John Chiv, clarifies early witness accounts that had misidentified the driver’s gender in the chaos following the incident.

Drone footage now reveals the staggering extent of the destruction after the stolen van careened off Broadway (Highway 101), crashed through a fence, and exploded in the restaurant’s parking lot around 6:50 p.m. Monday. One person was killed and several others injured by debris.

Patrick Jackson was dining inside the restaurant with family and friends when the collision occurred. “I was just thinking how crazy it would be if a car hit the restaurant,” Jackson said. “Then it happened.”

He and others saw a van, later confirmed stolen from New Life Services in Fortuna, speed through the Leon’s Car Care Center parking lot, tear through a steel fence, and slam into multiple parked vehicles. “Within seconds, the vehicle caught fire,” Jackson said. “Then it exploded…The first explosion rocked the restaurant windows, and everyone inside began to panic…,” Jackson said. “Someone opened the back door and everyone was ordered to exit quickly… People were screaming, kids were crying and even though I was seeing it with my own eyes it didn’t seem real!

Jackson recalled, “Several heroic individuals rushed to help victims, including a man who had been struck in a parked car….He was bleeding heavily and in shock…People helped move him to the grassy area on the side of the restaurant and one man stabilized his neck until paramedics arrived.”

As patrons fled through the back alley, some rushed to help others. Jackson witnessed bystanders pulling an injured man from a struck vehicle and stabilizing his neck while awaiting paramedics. “He was bleeding heavily and in shock,” Jackson said.

A second explosion followed, sending debris flying across the lot. “A huge chunk landed right between me and another guy,” Jackson said. “Those parked cars likely saved our lives—if they hadn’t been there, that van would’ve gone straight into the restaurant.”

At the time, Jackson believed the driver was male and said there were no signs of movement before the fire consumed the vehicle. It wasn’t until later that police confirmed the driver was a woman and the sole fatality in the crash.

“He was trapped,” Jackson said. “He burned up in the van. It was horrifying.”

Humboldt Bay Fire responded within minutes, attacking the flames with hoses and a deck gun. Law enforcement closed the scene, and the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office was called in. The drone footage documented the area, now seen clearly in aerial footage showing charred wreckage and blackened pavement.

A total of 12 vehicles were damaged in the incident, according to the EPD press release attached below. Jackson’s own vehicle, parked just two spaces away, suffered melted panels and shattered windows. “Fragments of the shattered fence were found scattered across the lot and several pierced [my] vehicle,” he told us.

“It wasn’t until nearly 10 p.m. that Jackson was allowed to inspect his vehicle, which was parked just two spots from the impact site. The front passenger side had melted, windows shattered, and the van’s detached wheel rim had struck and damaged the vehicle.”

The stolen van belonged to New Life Services and contained an estimated $10,000 worth of tools, according to the business co-owner. No employees were involved in the crash. The van had reportedly been stolen earlier in the day during a break-in at an employee’s home in Fortuna.

The investigation remains active, and authorities are still assessing the extent of additional injuries caused by flying debris.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact the Eureka Police Department at 707-441-4300.

Press release from Eureka Police Department:

On July 21, 2025, at approximately 6:53 PM, Eureka Police Department (EPD) patrol officers and Humboldt Bay Fire (HBF) responded to a fully engulfed van fire in the parking lot of a business in the 800 block of Broadway. HBF personnel quickly initiated fire suppression efforts. Unfortunately, the van’s driver was found deceased at the scene.

Following standard protocol, EPD’s Criminal Investigations Unit and Major/Fatal Injury Traffic Investigations responded to investigate the incident.

Preliminary Timeline of Events (approximate):

  • 6:46 PM – Fortuna Police Department contacted EPD’s Communications Center to report a stolen vehicle: a New Life Service van.
  • 6:47 PM – The van’s owner informed EPD the vehicle may be entering Eureka, though the information was second-hand.
  • 6:50 PM – California Highway Patrol advised EPD the van was speeding northbound on U.S.  Highway 101 and may have hit a guardrail.
  • 6:50 PM – A witness reported to EPD the van was traveling north on Broadway, driving into oncoming traffic.
  • 6:51 PM – EPD received a call reporting a fully engulfed van on fire on the 800 block of Broadway, with one person still inside.
  • 6:53 PM – An EPD officer arrived on scene and confirmed the van had been involved in a collision and was fully engulfed in flames.

Initial Findings:

  • The stolen van was traveling north on Broadway at a high rate of speed when it veered off the road, jumped the northeast curb at W. Grant Street, and continued north along the sidewalk.
  • It entered a parking lot in the 900 block of Broadway, crossed W. Washington Street, broke through a fence, and collided into two parked vehicles—one of which was occupied.
  • The impact scattered debris, injuring three pedestrians.
  • The van caught fire upon hitting a curb, then became engulfed, igniting one of the vehicles it struck.
  • A total of 12 vehicles were damaged in the incident.

Or the gas line on the van was ruptured, and the sparks from hitting the cement barriers in Leon’s lot ignited the gas that was being pumped thru the now ruptured gas line.

Driving through the fence and over stuff took it’s toll…not to be too heartless but it’s kinda too bad it didn’t explode a second or two sooner — might’ve avoided the injuries to the bystanders and some of the property damage.

Patrick Jackson – Will you please spend some time thinking about how crazy it would be if I like stars found a stash of cash and precious metals?

My theory on the subject involves the idea of the equilibrium of life’s ebbs and flows being effected by the sudden death and more important when it has potential to be more so, I won’t get all in depth on the organic process that has been identified with the phenomenon but if it’s possible it would be mostly things that seed chaos in to the possibility of the now in negative ways, which reach back toward the precursor events in the quantum domain and enter in ti a sort of cold war wirh the other beings linked by casualty to the event, my feeling about it is they all reach a concord about what is possible and what they truly desire. It’s all by agreement of a sort

It’s called dynamic equilibrium — the entire weight of the universe bearing down on every part of itself as it becomes aware of itself.

Ita very interesting to me that the thought of the crash’s potential had occurred to someone in the moments preceding it occurring. Synchronatic Precognition is a thing I have experienced with death of a sudden nature. As a matter of fact just today im dealing with some grief over not being able to listen to my inner voice and a life I could have potentially saved is struggling to live tonight. And the more I examine my feelings about it the more im sure I had a chance yesterday to change events and prevent this, but I failed to expert enough effort or will, and sloth or lack of faith in myself allowed me to fail to act. Or maybe just some are destined to witness and
have been aware of it the whole (time)

anyways I would like to hear more about this precognitive thought process if the person who had the thought cares to share more granular detail, at least one person who has invested much pondering time in the subject matter of non linear consciouness would appreciate the details. Thanks

Does anyone know who the driver was? Like there were no Ring doorbells or cameras that caught her face where she stole the van from?

The guy who was robbed said he saw “the individual” running toward the van and taking off. Go to the first article on this subject.
