Can You Help?: Family of Six Struggles After Highway 299 Crash Leaves Dad in ICU, Daughter Airlifted

family portrait of two parents and four daughters

A collision on Highway 299 has strained this family of six.

A family of six is facing an uphill recovery after a devastating crash on Highway 299 west of Willow Creek on Monday, July 14, left the father in the ICU and their 10-year-old daughter with a fractured vertebra. Now, friends and loved ones are asking the community for help.

The crash, which involved a Caltrans vehicle and an SUV carrying two adults and four children, shut down the highway and triggered a multi-agency emergency response. Bystanders rushed to pull the family from the wreckage, and emergency crews transported all six members to area hospitals. The 10-year-old was later flown to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland for treatment.

Josh, the father and sole provider for the family, sustained multiple injuries and has undergone several surgeries. He remains hospitalized in the ICU and is expected to be out of work for an extended period. The family’s friend, Kataryna, has taken in the youngest two children, while their 12-year-old daughter is staying with her biological mother, and a family member is with the 10-year-old in Oakland, as Danielle, the mother, remains at Josh’s bedside.

Kataryna launched a GoFundMe campaign on behalf of the family. “We are all working together to make sure this family is taken care of and can heal,” she wrote. “Any donations will be very appreciated. If you are unable to donate but still would like to help out in some way, reach out—we understand times are tough these days.”

The fundraiser aims to ease the financial strain caused by lost income, travel to distant hospitals, and the basic needs of caring for four children during a medical crisis.

No real progress… we’re in for a marathon and not a sprint. She’s made it to Saturday! We were told she probably wouldn’t make it to Tuesday… it’s just a long, slow process.

I will help but want to add the obvious: Get a lawyer, folks! And keep receipts, because it seems to me the State of CA will be paying the bills.

Probably so.

But Legal action… ‘takes awhile’.
Legal actions could delay financial settlement by multiple years.

There’s a case to be made for punitive damages on top of compensatory damages. Get your lawyer on it. You don’t warrant this grief. I’m sorry this happened, and I’m praying for your family members.

Still wouldn’t pay for the family’s travel, local stays, vehicle costs, lost incomes for family. Even comfort items for the patients. The last surgery I had was about $8000. The other expenses $10,000.

In my eyes, Caltrans should be paying for everything… just saying. Beautiful family… hope everyone is healed and united soon.

This is more than just a family tragedy. This is a million-dollar lawsuit waiting to happen, and they’ll need a great attorney to fight for justice. But right now, they need us — their community — to come together with love and support.

You can help. Give now to ease the crushing financial burden — from medical bills and lost wages to travel and childcare needs.

I have friends that currently work and used to work for Caltrans District 1. I asked around and they told me some interesting stuff about the person who was driving the Caltrans vehicle. Apparently this person is incredibly lazy and has a history of not doing any work whatsoever and all the District 1 managers just let this person remain employed despite constantly never performing their job properly. I’m not here to condemn Caltrans as a whole because I know my friends in maintenance and engineering are all incredibly smart and hard working. You’ll always have crappy workers wherever you go. This being said, I hope the family recovers and to immediately reach out to injury lawyers.
