A felony stop on Highway 101 just north of Eureka this morning is connected to a SWAT operation underway on H Street in Arcata, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. Our reporter, Ryan Hutson, is live at the scene in Arcata.

This is what we know so far. Around 9:30 a.m., several law enforcement vehicles surrounded a car near the Bayside Cutoff on southbound 101. Witnesses reported officers in full tactical gear, some carrying rifles, ordering a female occupant out of the vehicle at gunpoint. One passing driver described the scene as involving “full body armor” and said a woman was held “at gunpoint with assault rifles.”

Shortly afterward, a large SWAT presence was seen outside a home in the 100 block of H Street in Arcata. Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jesse Taylor confirmed the two incidents are related, explaining that deputies were serving a search warrant at the residence as part of the same operation.

“The scene has been made safe and there is no public safety concern at this time,” Taylor said. “We will be on scene for most of the morning and will issue more details when appropriate.”

Deputies and tactical units remained active at the Arcata location as of this writing.

We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

Law Enforcement is a tough job made more difficult by the necessity of wearing body armor. It’s hot and heavy but necessary with today’s criminals.

Agree. Plus mace, taser, hand gun, shot gun, or assault rifle, ammo, boots, gloves, eye protection, hat, or helmet. What am I missing?

A mace, chain mail and an APC to ride around in when you’re tearing up the real terrorist orgs: Girl scouts and the Tagalong cartel.

PR-24 Baton…Sadly, all the equipment is necessary with today’s heavily armed criminals.

No one in the photos is wearing “full body armor” but the bullet proof vest and the rest of the necessary gear adds enough in weight and discomfort — but it’s obviously needed in today’s environment.

I didn’t say they were wearing full body armor in the photo. I was just making a point about when it’s all required. But what they’re wearing in the photo is heavy and hot. I would easily lose 5 pounds wearing full body armor.

Standard-issue police vest: 5-7 pounds (2.3-3.2 kg)
Tactical vest: 7-10 pounds (3.2-4.5 kg)
Ballistic vest for law enforcement: 9-12 pounds (4-5.4 kg)
Military combat vest: 12-15 pounds (5.4-6.8 kg)
Custom-made Kevlar vest: 15-20 pounds (6.8-9 kg)

I weighed a friend’s Sam Browne once. 30 pounds counting weapons, magazines, handcuffs and baton. Any backpacker knows that’s more than you want to carry on your hips.

Yeah those apartments have seen lots of drugs over the years. All low level. Can’t really imagine any large business operating out of an apartment where all is fairly visible….So what was the offense? Big enough for. a full SWAT response and this highway stop? What was the charge?
