A wildfire that erupted near Alderpoint around 5:45 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, has scorched an estimated 190 acres, burned one outbuilding, and forced evacuation warnings and road closures and may have been arson, according to one witness. The Bridge Fire began as at least three separate ignition points along Alderpoint Road—two to the west and one to the east of the Alderpoint Bridge (now known as the Trevor Early Memorial Bridge).

Cal Fire Battalion Chief Ron McLaughlin reported to us about midnight that the two fires west of Alderpoint had burned together into one fire and were maintaining their footprint at about 40 acres, while the eastern blaze was mostly burning in a largely uninhabited area and is “uncontrolled.” Firefighters are going direct on that blaze.

As of late Sunday night, the fire continued to burn actively, particularly on the east side.

Around 11:30 p.m., reporter Lisa Music, broadcasting live from the eastern edge of the fire near Carter Creek, described the flames advancing toward the Eel River. “Fire engine after fire engine was rolling in,” she said, noting the challenging terrain and limited visibility. “Crews are out here digging hand lines, running hoses, driving dozers—working to keep our community safe.”

McLaughlin tells us that the cause of the fire is under investigation, but a local resident has reported suspicious activity. According to the wife of the original 911 caller, her husband saw a man in an older white Ford F-350 driving erratically and throwing items from his vehicle. Spot fires erupted along the road right afterward.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office issued evacuation warnings at 8:05 p.m. for zones HUM-E204-A, HUM-E204-B, HUM-E205-A, and HUM-E205-B. Residents in these areas are advised to be ready to leave on short notice. Affected residents can view full zone descriptions and updates at protect.genasys.com.

Road closures are in effect one mile west of Alderpoint just west of McCreary Lane  and east of town at the intersection of Alderpoint Road and Zenia Bluff Road (commonly known as Fire Camp). Residents east of Fire Camp are advised to consider alternate routes such as Blocksburg to Highway 36, though delays may occur due to construction.

Power was knocked out for approximately 230 customers earlier in the evening but has since been restored.

Firefighters from multiple agencies, including local VFDs and Cal Fire, remain engaged in a full suppression effort. While the western edge of the fire appears largely calm, efforts continue overnight to secure the more active eastern front. Cal Fire is still reporting 0% containment as of midnight on Sunday.

Tomorrow the temperatures in the Alderpoint area are predicted to hit the mid-nineties.

For evacuation information, visit humboldtsheriff.org/emergency or call 707-445-7251.

UPDATE:7:20 a.m.: According to the Cal Fire Incident page, the Bridge Fire is now mapped at 348 Acres, 0% Containment.

In a just world the arsonist, if caught and convicted, would be subject to the death penalty.

Really?
You’re fetishizing death, like it’s difficult, or you’re not going to do it too!
Besides, so far one outbuilding has burnt, and some fuels got mitigated across the river. Even if you think the Death Penalty is effective, this doesn’t quite rise to the same level of offense like rape and murder.
But hey, maybe you’ll get lucky one day and get to shoot somebody acting weird. I hope it works out.

Looks like you’re the one fetishizing arsonists — who are sometimes motivated by pyrophilia — maybe the arson investigators should start with you?

Intentionally setting fires at the base of fuel laden steep terrain with occupied dwellings is no less than attempted murder — and also endangers the firefighters — I give no credit because no one has died — yet.

Not excusing it! Jeez precious, is there any other punishment on the spectrum before you crank it up to 11? Or else craft a bill for us all to vote on. We’ll go straight to firing squads before trial or even the arrest of a suspect!
Again, not saying this person probably doesn’t need to get arrested, but, if you zoom out from your overwhelming fear of fire on the landscape, consider that burning a large unoccupied area East of Alderpoint might actually act as a fire break for a few years for another big blaster heading West later in the fire season when it’s even worse.
Before you get too bunched up over it, the perp was likely just overindulging in America’s favorite Independence Weekend activities: Alcohol, Drugs, trucks, and probably fireworks. Is this worse than partying under the bridge shooting rockets all night?

Your entire comment is ludicrous — maybe you can start a bail fund in case the arsonist is caught?

You obviously do not live around here. It came very close to being a disaster to property, livestock and human life!

And don’t worry. Arson investigators keep lists, and play a long game.
So just because I disagree with you on your tough talk comment, doesn’t mean I deserve a firing squad. I can get a Firing assignment and grab a drip torch.

In my opinion arson should be a capital offense.

Wrong this person tried to burn people and their property! What punishment do you think for attempted murder?

You sure about that?
Lethal injection might be more humane than charging you $4000 a month until you lose your home, even though you have insurance for chemo that rots your arm, but you already have dementia, and are paralyzed, crapping in diapers, pissing in a bag for years. That’s my Dad. He’s a good person. Why should an evil criminal get off easier?

So sorry. Good man that you are with him through his ordeal.
Life makes martyrs off us all eventually and older i get sometimes the cruelty feels harder to manage. The comfort of love is often the only salve and so many don’t even have that. You obviously really love your dad and he feels it.

Lock em up for life and study their friggen pschological make up and brain. Tech advances are rapidly developing like as with DNA and solving crimes. If we kill off the perps rather than study them and apply all the best technology etc to do so then we’ll just be swatting at flies and preventing very little. Design jails and prisons places that at least don’t contribute to people become more f’d up with locked up.

We’ve made amazing progress in understanding so much in this world and yet we remain our own worst enemy in part because we dont look in the collective mirror much nor invest in mental health research (other than psychology for selling things) and with recent federal “Priorities” /cuts only going to get worse. One study found that people with intentionally loud vehicles, you know the ones that roar through neighborhoods rattling windows and waking children and their parents and causing a generally aggressive disturbance have psychological profiles much like those of arsonists. We seem to be in a rush to develop ways to go to Mars, make better false eyelashes and butt implants, make vehicles bigger than needed till it escalates into suv wars on the roads yet we don’t fund the foster system, mental health for stuggling families, restructure the mental health system and research psychology and sociology like there is no tomorrow cause at this rate not gonna be while we’re our own worst enemy and so ignorant.

You’re dreaming if you imagine that “studying the brains” of criminals like arsonists, rapists and murderers will somehow enable us to reduce these types of crimes — by your own comments the systems that would oversee such studies and apply lessons learned are all underfunded and broken — what we know is that people committing these crimes are severely damaged and with few exceptions not remotely amenable to rehabilitation.

Catch and release doesn’t seem to be working — with very few exceptions (if any) there should be no second chance for rapists, child molesters, arsonists and murderers.

We said similarly about curing many diseases and avoiding many birth defects and being able to fly. I get from your other comment that we have not yet made enough progress with cancer and i am so sorry. Still what we have now is better than blood letting, whiskey and a bullet (perhaps) and other limitations we had for the ailing.

You express a belief in the godlike power of a government conspiracy. When have you seen the government perform so effectively? when have you seen two people or more keep a secret?
Oh hey, where was that huge quake that was supposed to hit Japan on the 5th?

The fairly immense size of Tanker 101, shown on it’s approach, just before the fire retardant drop it made, to illustrate the skill and courage it must take for such an immense aircraft, to make such an amazing drop, at such a low, descending altitude, in dangerous terrain, as shown previously at this comment link…

Thanks for that additional info…

I really meant to say, and should have said, that it was the pilot, not the plane, that had the skill and courage that it must take to fly that kind of plane that way, and I probably should also have mentioned the limited visibility that the pilots also have to deal with and overcome…

It’s really very amazing…

There were numerous kinds of air tankers there yesterday, some bigger, some smaller…

All impressive…

I should also mention the skill and courage of the Chinook helicopter pilot and and any other other kind of helicopter pilots…

There’s an underlying assumption that people gravitating to this site have some understanding of southern Humboldt County and northwestern California in general — if you don’t recognize place names that are in the common vernacular the story probably doesn’t affect you — but you could look it up!
