Just after 1 p.m. on Monday, June 30, emergency responders were dispatched to an ATV rollover in eastern Humboldt, where a male subject sustained multiple injuries.

Star Ambulance, currently providing coverage for the eastern edge of Humboldt County due to the ongoing closure of Highway 36 near Grizzly Creek, initially attempted to transport the patient to a landing zone at Bridgeville School for air evacuation.

However, the initially requested Reach air ambulance declined the mission because of weather conditions. CAL FIRE Copter 611, based at the Kneeland helibase, responded in its place and was originally directed to Bridgeville School with an estimated arrival time of 1:30 p.m.

Scanner traffic later clarified that the crash occurred on Bear Creek Road, closer to the Dinsmore Airport, prompting responders to redirect Copter 611, which landed at the new location at 1:33 p.m. and awaited Star Ambulance’s arrival with the patient.

The patient, a male, was reported to be conscious but suffering from multiple injuries at the time of transport.

Wow that’s a big step forward from the old UH1-F we used to ride around in. Hope the patient recovers quickly. With the ongoing slide the FireHawk will probably see a lot of action this summer. Hopefully we will have a mellow fire season.

I hope you are right about a mellow fire season. However, the grass and vegetation from a good rainy season and the dry summer winds that have been blowing later than ever don’t bode well. Plus, it is normal for thunder clouds to form as soon as the wind stops.

I also hope that the fire crews paid attention to their training this season and don’t get hurt.

Do the new Firehawks carry a Paramedic and an EMT or are they sending an EMT or two to Paramedic level calls?

The helicopter often has paramedic certified personnel on board but the copter is a BLS rig and doesn’t carry medications and the people who are paramedics on the crew don’t treat patients at the paramedic level. The helicopter will transport the responding paramedic with the patient if there is one when the helicopter comes on scene. Also, what’s a paramedic level call?? In rural EMS, sometimes you get a person with the very basic first responder certification and that just has to do until someone else comes along.

Sounds like the gentleman had a very serious ATV accident when they call for air transport. REACH AIR is totally worthless. Thank you to the crew of CAL FIRE Copter 611 for taking that extremely important call to transport the injured man to the hospital. Between your crew and the men and women of our Coast Guard you have our butts covered! THANK YOU! I hope the man will heal completely from his injuries and be riding again soon.

Agreed. All too often we read that the air ambulance refused to land, because of weather. If I lived in a remote area, I’d put my money to better use than buying one of their policies.

When it comes to REACH AIR, they won’t get a penny of my money!

Dang. It’s been a bad year for ATV deaths and wrecks. I too got hurt bad and was fortunate decades ago. Can behave and having fun and next thing you know, knocked out with a concussion and injuries. Wish a healthy recovery.

A male? A male what? I presume you mean a male human – that is a boy or man, rather than a male horse, cow, cougar, or dog? Sorry/not sorry, because words matter.

The day a male moose flips an ATV on Bear Creek Road is the day we’ll start specifying ‘human.’ Until then, we figure our readers can safely assume ‘male’ refers to a person, not a particularly adventurous elk.

LOL… Love it!

However, I do know about a dog that crashed his dad’s pickup truck.
