A big rig crash early Thursday morning, June 19, 2025, blocked both northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 101 near Leggett, causing significant traffic disruptions as crews worked to recover the overturned truck and attached container.

The crash was first reported at 6:17 a.m. with California Highway Patrol units arriving on scene shortly afterward. The rig was found on its side, blocking both lanes, though the driver appeared uninjured and was seen exiting the vehicle. A juvenile passenger was reportedly involved. An ambulance was dispatched to the scene, but it is not yet clear whether there were any injuries or how severe they may be.

By 6:45 a.m., southbound lanes were reopened, but northbound traffic remained impacted. As of 7:15 a.m., all northbound lanes were still blocked, with vehicles being diverted into the southbound #1 lane to allow for limited traffic flow.

Heavy-duty tow trucks were dispatched, and responders called for an additional three-axle tractor to assist with recovery operations. Caltrans and Leggett Fire responded to the scene to help manage traffic and assist in setting up a hard closure in the affected area.

Motorists traveling through the area should expect delays and are advised to use caution or seek alternate routes while cleanup continues.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

Update 9:30 a.m.: According to the CHP log, traffic is moving in the collision area. The #2 northbound lane is estimated to remain closed until 4 p.m. today. Please use caution when driving in the area.

Been clockibg semis at 70-75mph on 101 in relation to my speedometer.
Super dangerous. Steve Wills&Sundberg logging are some of the worst, Wills truck tried to run us off the highway. Watch out. Theyre old skool logging so the cops wont do anything. Pass them faat even if you have to go 80, get away from them on 101.

I’m not naming companies, but it’s more than just them that are driving 70+ in the slow/truck lanes. Especially around Ukiah. But as Bozo said below, it should be a red zone for CHP, although some days it is, but more often it isn’t. And there’s a dozen spots I can think of that if a truck hits it at anything over 55 they’re going to roll over.

I am not sure what caused his truck to roll over onto its side, but I sure hope the driver is fine. The juvenile passenger must have had some type of injury if an ambulance was dispatched to the scene. I am not going to place blame on the driver. He may have had a medical issue, steering tire blowout, mechanical failure in the steering assembly, forced to make a sudden change due to a vehicle on his side of the road, container got loose and shifted its weight to one side etc. I realize a lot of trucks do drive to fast and should slow the hell down, but I am not sure if this was the case. Hopefully the CHP will know the facts.

Too much speed caused the truck to roll.

IMHO:

Leggett to Laytonville should be a ‘RED ZONE’ for the CHP.
Focus LEO on these ‘accident’ zones.

That is what the CHP should be about anyway.

Oh well…

I agree Bozo. The big rig drivers that use the highway for a racetrack or get one more load in before the day ends need to get their butts kicked with a ticket they won’t forget! They will eventually end up injuring or killing someone or themselves.

Dream on. Several years ago, wife and I were going to the SanFran VA Med, Center for my then worsening heart condition, in Mendo, the freeway went to two lanes and 55 mph. We missed the sign. Snotty, young, boy scout, spanking-new, prick CHIPPIE pulled us over at 65mph and refused to accept our apology or even LOOK at my official admission letter to VA Cardiology at Ft. Miley. Got the ticket. We’ll see if they can hard-ass the speeding, dangerous bigrigs like they did a Vietnam veteran whose wife was driving, not sure what my outcome would be and worried.

That area used to be patrolled by aircraft as there were signs on the roadway stating such. Does CHP no longer patrol by air?
