Eureka’s No Kings Rally: So Little Sidewalk, So Much Protest

A plethora of flags were carried during the march. No Kings march on June 14 in Eureka

Humboldt County residents showed up in dramatic fashion at the No Kings rally in Eureka on Saturday. Eureka Police Chief Brian Stephens estimated approximately 4000 people participated–making it the largest protest seen in Humboldt County since President Donald Trump first took office in 2017. The city saw a very large group of diverse protesters occupy sidewalks and ultimately take to the streets with the cooperation of Eureka Police and California Highway Patrol.EPD blocking the streets.

In conjunction with over 200 protests planned within California and over 2000 nationwide, Eureka’s rally –in part starting in Old Town at Madaket Plaza and culminating at the courthouse– brought together many groups and community members determined to call attention to concerns of government overreach by the Trump Administration. Protestors were vocal on a wide range of issues ranging from domestic to foreign, from due process to Medicare, and from ICE to Iran.

The day started with one group of protestors holding a rally at the Madaket Plaza prior to marching to the courthouse, where another group of several hundred were already gathered. While the two masses converged at the courthouse, other people kept arriving. The range of ages and faces was far more diverse than in previous rallies organized along with the grassroots conglomerate of 50501. This time the gathering including locals from the immigrant diaspora and many of the Gen Z and millennial generations.. The groups didn’t always agree on how to proceed–with arguments and insults exchanged over some protesters marching in the streets while others wanted the protest to stay on the sidewalks.

Among the various groups represented were Quakers For Peace, the 1000 Grandmothers Brigade, Centro de Pueblo, The Redwood Peace & Justice Center, Veterans For Peace, the Humboldt Peace and Justice Coalition, Bitches Get Stuff Done – Eureka Chapter, Taxpayers Against Genocide, and Food Not Bombs – Myrtletown chapter, to name a few.

At the Madaket Plaza rally, there were several costumed protesters who opened the rally with a performative demonstration, and then speeches were presented – with local Humboldt Rockers hip hop crew offering a breakdance interlude over the Ice Cube track “arrest the president” – before organizers addressed the crowd and offered safety suggestions prior to marching to the courthouse to join protesting forces already convened in front of the county courthouse where previous rallies coordinated in part with 50501 grassroots organizers.

Video livestreamed by Ryan Hutson on Redheaded Blackbelt’s Facebook page.

Among speeches offered to the crowd as they rallied before marching forward was a passionate address from Brenda Perez of Centro de Pueblo, which has advocated for local immigrant rights and community awareness since 2017, when the county passed the first Sanctuary Measure in the state )and possibly across the nation) by voter referendum.

Perez implored the crowd to support immigrant community members, and issued an alert to those who, as Perez put it, “Trump just is the tip of the Iceberg, my friends, but that iceberg is melting!” as she urged allied neighbors to be prepared for federal agents to arrive in Humboldt County. Perez said, “…seven years ago we were standing right here speaking up for sanctuary – and today we have it and now we need to protect it!” as the crowd roared in front of her.

As the demonstrators mobilized to march several blocks to the county courthouse, a brass band led the way down the boardwalk where the protest proceeded on to the courthouse. There, a large group was already waiting. Street corners were packed elbow to elbow as protesters arrived from Madaket Plaza, with signs, banners and family members in tow.

Signs on display were more plentiful and more provocative than at earlier rallies, and the protest art was varied and vibrant for the event, including the previously seen “funeral for democracy” coffin and funeral procession, a faux guillotine chopping a small orange, several court jesters flanking a Trump-like blowup doll stuffed in a trash can, a 3-count of handmaids, and too many artistic renditions of Trump as King to count.

In the crowd, likely the oldest protester at the event at age 100, was WWII Veteran George K. Mullins, who had decided to attend the rally to express his opposition to what he called “a dictator” in President Trump.

As the courthouse protest proceeded, and marchers arrived from the Madaket Plaza rally in a procession complete with bullhorns and banners leading the way, another group of protesters – many of them generations apart from those already gathered on the sidewalks, lawn and stairs of the courthouse block – arrived marching up all three lanes of 5th Street traffic, on Highway 101.

Video by Ryan Hutson

While several of the protests had been planned and permitted, some rally goers and organizers were dismayed by the group of activists and protesters taking over the street, despite there being very little space remaining on sidewalks flanking the main drag.

Video by Ryan Hutson

As some proceeded to occupy crosswalks after the light had turned green – other attendees at the rally scorned those who were blocking traffic. Although there were moments of tension as protesters occupied the streets of downtown Eureka, Eureka Police Chief Brian Stephens confirmed that there were no arrests, and that the demonstration was peaceful apart from a few “unsafe” drivers who were pulled over near the demonstration zone and given warnings.

Incessant protesting will change nothing…

But I have to give the attendees credit for having the courage to stand up in public, no matter how wrong-headed they are, unlike the keyboard warriors here who crave anonymity.

Yeah, no. Look at healthy democracies like in France and South Korea, where protests are a vital part of their process! The President declared martial law on South Korea and right away protesters marched down to the presidential palace and occupied it! In France, when they try to change the retirement age, to benefit corporations, the people immediately show their distain, and the government backs down!
Bless and yes, let’s get better at using this important and sanctioned process!!

“The groups didn’t always agree on how to proceed–with arguments and insults exchanged over some protesters marching in the streets while others wanted the protest to stay on the sidewalks.”

So much for the commenters from yesterday who falsely claimed the protestors only took to the streets after they were closed by the police.

Credit to RHBB for accurately stating the facts in their coverage yesterday and to the police for their commitment to public safety — first by ticketing unsafe drivers and second for closing the streets once it was clear the protest organizers were unable to maintain order.

He was not “appointed” by Gov Walz. He had been on that workforce advisory board for many years, throughout the administrations of several governors. From the Guardian: “Boelter was appointed by numerous Minnesota governors to the workforce development board, which is tasked with improving business development in the state. John Hoffman also served on the board, though it is unclear if they knew each other.”

I changed my mind on mass deportations and now support them. During Trump’s first term I wasn’t keen on such action. Mainly because illegals from Mexico come to work and they work hard. How can you bear them any ill will. The issue is their anchor babies are leftists and grew up in an environment that teaches them to hate Americans and America. Allowing illegals to remain = more anchor babies.

Moreover, illegal numbers have surged and my right to vote has been diluted. Illegals count for purposes of the electoral college and also congressional seats. Republicans should have 20-40 more seats. They don’t because illegals flock to Democrat areas, giving Dems more seats.

The final straw was Biden opening the border fully and allowing the cartels to get richer, traffic children, and bring in gangs. China also sent it spies and drone armies to plan attacks like Israel did to Iran and Ukraine to Russia.

To be completely honest, I don’t “like” mass deportations on an emotional level but it has to be done. Otherwise we won’t have a country.

Pro Tip:
The difference is in the understanding of why we believe we deserve a Country, or A Home, or even the audacity to Dream. To build and create something that cannot be taken away. A Family, a community, a connection to the 30 day billing cycles that defines what sacrifice means.

Our fight is with entrenched and over reaching bureaucracy bought and paid for by the shot callers and the storytellers.

If we allow ourselves to be treated like feudal serfs, then expect things to become even more sadistic and cruel.

Protesting is not Going to solve our massive codependency problems.

Thanks- Same here. People saying you’re racist if you don’t want your country overrun w illegal immigration is a red Herring. You’re not racist. Neither am I. But the floodgates did open under Biden and we need deportations. It’s sad. I don’t like it. But it needs to be done. And when I see people bitterly opposing it by waving flags of other countries and calling me a racist… that’s when I know we are on the right path.

Never forget the democrats lied for 4 years about Bidens cognitive fitness. Allowed an invasion that resulted in crime, strain on schools, hospitals, housing, stealing jobs and driving down our wages. At the same time driving gas prices and inflation to record highs. Biden was literally compromised by China allowing spy balloon to fly over the entire country collecting data b4 acting. All this and the press wouldn’t call him on anything and provide cover. Trump on the other hand gets almost killed, accused of collusion fake and daily has some manufactured scandal by the press that always turns out to be fake news so who’s the king. It’s seems to me this is just another lie from the dems who have proven that they are not to be trusted ever as they clearly do not have Americans best interest in mind.

Kind of a slap in the face to hold the protest on the 250th anniversary celebration for the Army, and also flag day. These anti American protesters actually flew Mexican flags in our nation on our Flag Day! Pathetic whiny losers is what they are. Could have picked any other day, but this was done on purpose, obviously, to show their anti American values to the rest of us .

“immigrant diaspora”

what?

Sounds like illegal immigration with a powder sugar coating.

AI OVERVIEW: While both diaspora and immigrant describe people living outside their country of origin, a diaspora refers to a group sharing a common heritage, often with a strong sense of connection to their ancestral homeland, while an immigrant is simply someone who moves to a new country to live permanently. Essentially, all diasporas involve immigrants, but not all immigrants are part of a diaspora.

This sounds like an obvious wordplay ploy to garner sympathy for criminals, otherwise insightful coverage.

Basic words, like immigration policy?

There are a couple meaningful words that are routinely being replaced with editorialized fancy sugar-coated lies. 😉

Ai generated
U.S. immigration policy is governed by the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) and focuses on both facilitating legal immigration and enforcing immigration laws. It balances the admission of immigrants with national interests, including family reunification and economic contributions, while also addressing enforcement and removal.
