Brian Joseph Federici
July 21, 1952 – January 5, 2025

Brian Federici was a long-time resident of Arcata, CA having moved to Arcata in 1978. He was born on Long Island, New York and lived at the end of Long Island Sound close to New York City. With both his mother and fathers’ families from New York City areas he frequented the Big Apple and knew the places around town somewhat as a local. He served in the U.S. Army, PFC stationed in Germany near the Iron Curtain in an Armored Tank Unit. He loved to reminisce about the stories of his comrades there and his encounters with the local populace. His stories of those experiences were many and entertaining in their levity of seriousness of the times and the hilarity of the personalities involved.

Brian worked in Arcata for Burlwood Industries from 1978 to 1984, being an incredible furniture builder with talent of taking native CA wood from the beaches and redwood burls making furniture into eye catching works of art. Brian also later made willow furniture and used his talents to create amazing willow art and beautiful expressive art displays often using his own hieroglyphics. His studio located at the SE corner of the old Creamery Building was an artist’s paradise of eclectic memories of life and the love of the wild outdoors. He ran his art studio there from 1984 to 2016 and was a frequent place for local friends, acquaintances and customers to roam his shop and immerse themselves in the art of living the dreams of the North Coast art world of expression of cultural freedom in this lifestyle of the Avant but on guard for humanity. The world became a better place with Brian in it.

Brian collected friends from all walks of life. His unique energy resonated beauty and he became the centerpiece that brought many people together. Brian nurtured his friendships like a fine gardener. His smile was a beacon of light in a sometimes-dark world. ‘Come sit and talk’, he would say. And time would stand still.

The Celebration of Life Gathering begins at 3:00 pm Saturday afternoon June 14th. A great local live band, The Breakers’ from Shelter Cove will be playing starting at 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. If you knew Brian Federici and want to attend please come and enjoy the company of his beloved friends and family. Some food and drinks will be provided but feel free to potluck and share your food and drink with others. Alcohol will not be served.

Thank you, i hope to make it.
I was trying to think of Brian-isms, the things he would say. My daughter reminded me that he always said, “God bless you!” and that is true.
It’s funny, if you didn’t know Brian and you read this, you might think he was one of those people who took pride in being a “character,” unique, one of the “shaman dudes,” kind of full of his special personality. (Not that anything suggesting that is written into it! It’s a very honest and positive tribute. But i think we all know the ones i mean.) However, nothing involving pride or vanity could ever be associated with Brian. I have never known anyone more humble, more open in his curiosity about life.

Where to begin. In 1997 I met Brian Willow woodworks. I use to get my spinach from him at his studio / home at the old arcata creamery. He was a very kind , empathetic, caring individual. As time passed I began to grow my own spinach. And didn’t need to visit as often. But if you were in Arcata in the morning he could surely be found at Los Bagels. He was basically the mayor of Arcata in my mind. As I built my home inland I commissioned him for some pieces of furniture. His art that he was masterfully crafting in his shop. I can remember the smell of his shop and all the spinach. It was glorious. I’m forgetting his roomies name maybe Doug. He too was a swell guy. Brian was an amazing artist and community member. He rode his ten speed everywhere. I would invite him to the hill and he was always so reluctant to leave Arcata. He moved some years back to Florida I think Eddy from Los Bagels I think told me. I sure do miss him to this day. He had a huge impression on me as a young buck coming to Humboldt. Rest in paradise my friend.

Nussbaum, that was Doug.
Yeah, Brian rode his bike to harvest willow. A guy who walked his talk.

Brian was a gem. Here’s a short video I made when he told me that his studio was closing. Following that link is one to google photos, containing the entire archive of photos of his studio taken from Sept. 2017.

Soo sorry to have missed this. I think I met Brian in 1999 while skateboarding outside his studio. We remained in pretty close contact over the years. I painted a portrait of him back in the day and curious where that ended up, if anybody knows.

I met brian in stuart florida when I moved there during 2020. I used to say he was my guru and hed reply I was his.

One of the kindest smartest people ive ever met and had a tremendous impact on me and will for the rest of my life

The only person ive ever met to have read all of the carlos castaneda books and wed talk about them all the time

He taught me how to use one of the local vines to make dreamcatchers as a substitute for willow, and we’d visit the local bald eagle nests together

Im sure everyone has heard about the ships of light at the golden gate bridge as I must have heard the story about 30 times. No one brings it up that much unless it was something that truly happened to them. “We know of every sparrow that falls out of the sky”

He could tell anyone the meaning of their last name based off the etymology, and would have the dictionary out on his table and read it like it was the newspaper.

When he passed I got some of the dream catchers and the wall tapestry in the picture im attaching but sadly I had to leave it behind when I moved away. I still have some dream catchers in a warehouse in florida that if anyone who knew brian close would want I can send, whenever I get a chance to get back there and retrieve them.

I love to see the comments from all the people who were touched by such an amazing soul and will do my part to honor him and his legacy the rest of my days

Please feel free to message me
