[Update] Skeletal Parts Found in Two Places in Humboldt County Decades Ago Identified as Missing Trinity County Teacher

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that partial human remains found years apart in two distant locations–Trinidad and Ammon Ridge–within the county belong to Kay Josephine Medin, a teacher who disappeared from the Hyampom area of Trinity County in August 1987. The case remains an open homicide investigation.

The breakthrough identification on a piece of a skull found on a Trinidad Head beach was made through advanced DNA testing conducted by Othram, a forensic lab in Texas that specializes in solving cold cases using forensic-grade genome sequencing and genetic genealogy. Funding for the testing was provided in 2024 through federal support from U.S. Representative Jared Huffman to help clear a backlog of unidentified human remains cases in Humboldt County. Othram wrote about their work with HCSO today here.

The identification of Medin’s skull, found in 1993 near Trinidad Head in coastal Humboldt County, links back to a 1987 discovery of dismembered remains off Ammon Ridge near Friday Ridge Road—deep in a remote, forested region of eastern Humboldt County.

“There’s no reason for her to have been out there,” said Deputy Mike Fridley of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. Fridley, who formerly served as lieutenant before retiring and returning to help investigate cold cases, emphasized the strange circumstances. “No car was left behind. And we don’t know if she was killed and cut up—or if animals did that. But that’s a good place to drop a body.”

Fridley, speaking in an interview this morning, said the initial remains were discovered on November 25, 1987, after an anonymous typewritten letter was sent from San Francisco to the Sheriff’s Office. The letter, included with a package containing some human remains, gave directions to more of her skeleton near Ammon Ridge. Dental records confirmed the remains belonged to Kay Medin.

According to Othram, “Nickolas Medin, who died in 2018, reported to the Trinity County Sheriff’s office in that he had left on a business trip and when he returned home, Kay was gone. Kay’s purse and personal property were found at the residence. The Medin property was searched, and friends and family were contacted. Kay, who had no serious medical issues, was employed as a teacher at the Hyampom School. Kay’s boss was contacted and reported that she had been in good spirits. The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office listed Kay’s disappearance as suspicious.”

More than five years later, on February 16, 1993, a man walking near Trinidad Head discovered the top of a human skull, which was turned in to the Fortuna Police Department. Traditional DNA profiling at the time yielded no matches. The case remained cold for more than 30 years.

Fridley explained that Othram’s recent DNA work eventually led to the identification of a living relative of Medin, whose DNA sample confirmed the skull belonged to the missing teacher. The skull may have traveled from the Ammon Ridge area through a series of waterways: “The ocean moves things around,” Fridley said. He stated that it was possible an animal took it down to a creek to the Trinity River, which empties into the Klamath River, and finally to the ocean where the skull piece may have been carried to Trinidad Head.

Fridley noted that a significant portion of Medin’s remains are still unaccounted for. “A lot of her is still missing,” he said, adding that investigators maintain drawings showing which parts of her skeleton have been found. “Even when multiple body parts are found, we have to leave [the person] listed as missing. We might get another body part that is hers.”

This is the seventh case the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has solved using Othram’s forensic genealogy assistance and the 63rd such case publicly solved in California using the company’s technology.

But for Fridley, many unknowns linger. “There’s more questions than answers,” he said.

The case is still considered an open homicide. Anyone with information is urged to contact Deputy Mike Fridley at (707) 441-3024.

Update:

Othram has released their own press release regarding the identification of the skull bone found in 1993 along with newspaper clippings around the time of Medin’s disappearance and when her remains were initially discovered on Ammon Ridge.

I think in this case, the timing of her husband’s business trip is a little bit suspicious.

If the had remains they previously identified as hers, why did they have to find a relative to match? Dont they still have access to her prior remains?

The top of the skull wasn’t found near Trinidad Head, until 1993…

And no real reason to suspect a connection, since it was found so far from her other remains…

“More than five years later, on February 16, 1993, a man walking near Trinidad Head discovered the top of a human skull, which was turned in to the Fortuna Police Department.”

That is the human remains that needed DNA analysis, and a relatives match, to recently identify…

The rest of her partial remains that were found, contained enough evidence to identify them through dental records…

“Fridley, speaking in an interview this morning, said the initial remains were discovered on November 25, 1987, after an anonymous typewritten letter was sent from San Francisco to the Sheriff’s Office. The letter, included with a package containing some human remains, gave directions to more of her skeleton near Ammon Ridge. Dental records confirmed the remains belonged to Kay Medin.”

But, I maybe see what you are saying…

You understand all of that, but…

“If they had samples of remains that had been perviously identified as hers, couldn’t they have just compared them to the partial skull for a DNA match?

Good question…

Maybe 1987 was too early for routine DNA sample registry for incomplete human remains…???

I have no idea if that is even common practice now, in cases of partial remains found, just in case more partial parts are eventually found…

Sounds like a good idea though, maybe it is routine, now…

Here is a link to two more previous murders of women in the Trinidad Head area …

Four days later, on January 18, a group of hikers exploring Trinidad Head, the rocky promontory that shelters Trinidad Harbor, found Fischer deceased at the base of a concrete cross that commemorated the Spanish discovery of the area in 1776. She was fully clothed, except her pants were pulled down, and she appeared to have been raped and strangled.

Continued…

Correction: only one, Fisher, was found in Trinidad area the other, Bowman, found around the same time, was found off 299, similarly to Medin…

The second, Bowman, is mentioned in the newspaper article featured in Matt LafFevers write up…

https://mendofever.com/2022/03/16/46-years-ago-karen-fischer-sought-humboldts-pristine-beaches-but-wound-up-raped-and-strangled-on-trinidad-head/

Interestingly, although not also teachers, these two female victims were both students, Bowman, from HSU, and Fisher, from University of Colorado…

Also coincidentally one of these previous victims was also associated with Highway 299, which has connections to Ammon Ridge and/or Friday Ridge Road, where some of the rest of Medins remains were found..

It seems more likely to me that medin was more likely murdered near Trinidad Head, where her partial skull was unintentionally left by the killer and then eventually found, and then the rest of her remains were moved from there by the killer by land to Ammon Ridge, instead of the top of the skull mysteriously traveling from Ammon Ridge to Trinidad Head area, by way of the Trinity River, then by way of the Klamath River, and then by way the Pacific Ocean…

Especially considering the previous female murder victim also found in Trinidad Head area from 1976 ish that could have possibly been related…

Has anyone been keeping up with Galina Trefils posts on Facebook about her father (John Trefil, MD) being a serial killer? If you Google Dr. Trefils name, you can easily see the details of why he had his medical license revoked. Very unprofessional and unethical conduct.

Perhaps there is some merit to what appear at first to be outrageous claims.

I agree with you on merit about the claims of her father, but this case i believe is the work of the zodiac.it’s most likely not her husband this is the work of a serial killer.the typewritten letter from s.f. to the sheriff office is really what makes it seem like zodiac.he moved up in 1986.his last letter to media was inn1991 postmarked from eureka.this is just my opion.he probably did it to make the authority think he’s still n the bay because he was here(he wasn’t n the bay anyways).only thing else i wonder is how some ppl use to say his letter was post marked from mckinleyville when it was eureka&it wasn’t known publicly yet.makes me think some ppl knew like the fbi,why its a secret I have no idea.but hopefully friedley doesnt blow the facts off cause only way to get closure for this ladies family is a confession.hurry before the coward Ray kills another innocent woman.makes me sick seeing him, knowing what he does&drives by kids at school ppl know him they blow off facts.thats weird to.

Yes,im for real&yes his last letter was postmarked from eureka in 1991.it was a holiday type card though not a letter.Ray is a name of a person obviously&one of his letters had the sketch of the post master keys on it which also is him laughing at everyone.he’s not dead & is very much so alive.but anyways if you have a better guess who it was that killed this woman throw it out there because maybe you don’t know enough to downplay my guess..its just a guess but with facts you may not understand.why would the letter be typewritten then sent from sf?why would his zodiac card then be sent from eureka.

Kym, Newspaper articles identify the victim only as “Kay Adams”, or “Ms. Adams” and “her husband” as Nick Medin…

But this article identifies her as “Kay Josephine Medin”…

Just curious…

Was “Ms.Adams” her “school teacher name”, or maybe her maiden name…???

“This is the seventh case the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has solved using Othram’s forensic genealogy…”

Since when is identifying the murder victim considered solving the case?

When its in humboldt county thats considered closing the case, everywhere else its not.kinda like 2 shots to the head & gun is 20ft from his body is a suicide, until they get asked how so,then its suspicious.either way no need for an investigation.ITS FAR FROM.A CLOSED CASE,ITS JUST THE VICTIM IDENTIFIED FINALLY..great comment it’de be really impressive if someone could answer that though.

Because missing person or unidentified remains is it’s own case. Once they are found, that case closes and a murder or suspicious death case starts. It will have a different case number moving forward, and the new case includes all the info from the previous investigation.
