Caution: Beachgoers Warned of Sneaker Wave Risk Along North Coast

Sneaker Wave Warning Graphic from NOAAThe National Weather Service (NWS) in Eureka has issued a Beach Hazards Statement, warning of an increased risk of dangerous sneaker waves along the North Coast through 5 p.m. Friday. The advisory affects coastal areas in Del Norte, Northern and Southwestern Humboldt, and Mendocino Counties.

Sneaker waves are powerful, unexpected surges that can surge far up the beach without warning, often following long periods of calm seas. The NWS cautions that these waves are capable of sweeping people into the ocean from beaches, rocks, and jetties. They can also shift large logs, posing a serious threat to anyone nearby.

“Don’t be fooled by an ocean that looks calm,” the statement reads. “There can be 30 minutes of small waves before a sneaker wave strikes.”

In addition to the immediate hazard, meteorologists are tracking a weak weather front moving through the region early Friday, followed by strong northerly winds this weekend. Gusts could reach gale force — up to 40 knots — particularly on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday afternoons. These winds will drive very steep and chaotic seas ranging from 12 to 15 feet at 10-second intervals, increasing the danger for beachgoers and boaters alike.

Winds are expected to begin easing Tuesday and continue to calm into midweek.

The NWS urges the public to stay off rocks and jetties, avoid steep beaches, and remain well back from the shoreline. Above all, people are advised to never turn their backs on the ocean.

Local officials recommend postponing beach visits or exercising extreme caution, especially during the high-risk period.

If you and/or your family are headed to the beach for some fun and relax please be aware of the sneaker waves. Stay high up on the beach in a safe area, don’t walk on the jetty. There have been waves that completely washed vehicles off and into the ocean. If you have children and/or your dog, please keep them on a leash and out of the surf. I know kids and dogs like to play in the surf, but it could cost them their life. Even better if you can pick another day when there are no sneaker wave warnings, and the surf is calm.

And avoid large pieces of wood like logs and stumps. Tempting resting places, but oh so dangerous.
