North Coast’s Cal Poly Humboldt Among 45 Universities Under Federal Civil Rights Investigation

Press release from the Department of Education:

Department of Education logoThe U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) opened investigations into 45 universities under Title VI following OCR’s February 14 Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) that reiterated schools’ civil rights obligations to end the use of racial preferences and stereotypes in education programs and activities. The investigations come amid allegations that these institutions have violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act (1964) by partnering with “The Ph.D. Project,” an organization that purports to provide doctoral students with insights into obtaining a Ph.D. and networking opportunities, but limits eligibility based on the race of participants.

OCR is also investigating six universities for allegedly awarding impermissible race-based scholarships and one university for allegedly administering a program that segregates students on the basis of race.

“The Department is working to reorient civil rights enforcement to ensure all students are protected from illegal discrimination. The agency has already launched Title VI investigations into institutions where widespread antisemitic harassment has been reported and Title IX investigations into entities which allegedly continue to allow sex discrimination; today’s announcement expands our efforts to ensure universities are not discriminating against their students based on race and race stereotypes,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. “Students must be assessed according to merit and accomplishment, not prejudged by the color of their skin. We will not yield on this commitment.”

The universities now under investigation for allegedly engaging in race-exclusionary practices in their graduate programs include:

  • Arizona State University – Main Campus
  • Boise State University
  • Cal Poly Humboldt
  • California State University – San Bernadino
  • Carnegie Mellon University
  • Clemson University
  • Cornell University
  • Duke University
  • Emory University
  • George Mason University
  • Georgetown University
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Montana State University-Bozeman
  • New York University (NYU)
  • Rice University
  • Rutgers University
  • The Ohio State University – Main Campus
  • Towson University
  • Tulane University
  • University of Arkansas – Fayetteville
  • University of California-Berkeley
  • University of Chicago
  • University of Cincinnati – Main Campus
  • University of Colorado  Colorado Springs
  • University of Delaware
  • University of Kansas
  • University of Kentucky
  • University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
  • University of Minnesota-Twin Cities
  • University of Nebraska at Omaha
  • University of New Mexico – Main Campus
  • University of North Dakota – Main Campus
  • University of North Texas – Denton
  • University of Notre Dame
  • University of NV – Las Vegas
  • University of Oregon
  • University of Rhode Island
  • University of Utah
  • University of Washington-Seattle
  • University of Wisconsin-Madison
  • University of Wyoming
  • Vanderbilt University
  • Washington State University
  • Washington University in St. Louis
  • Yale University

The schools under investigation for alleged impermissible race-based scholarships and race-based segregation are:

  • Grand Valley State University
  • Ithaca College
  • New England College of Optometry
  • University of Alabama
  • University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
  • University of South Florida
  • University of Oklahoma, Tulsa School of Community Medicine

Background:

On February 14, OCR sent a Dear Colleague Letter to educational institutions receiving federal funding clarifying that, pursuant to federal antidiscrimination law, they must cease using race preferences and stereotypes as a factor in their admissions, hiring, promotion, compensation, scholarships, prizes, administrative support, sanctions, discipline, and other programs and activities. On March 1, the Department released FAQs to anticipate and answer questions that may have arisen in response to the DCL.

These OCR investigations are being conducted pursuant to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act (1964), which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin in education programs and activities receiving federal funding. Institutions’ violation of Title VI can result in loss of federal funds.

I’ve got no problem with this…

The person that gets the best grades and exhibits the best performance, has earned the chance at the best opportunities…

That’s how it should be…

Overlooking that person to fill a quota would be a step in the wrong direction…

TRG ⬇️
“The person that gets the best grades and exhibits the best performance, has earned the chance at the best opportunities…”
➡️”That’s how it should be.”⬅️

Unfortunately it wasn’t that way for many decades in the past. ?

Inner city kids are still at a disadvantage in a lot of cases. ☹️

Let’s continue to help them all we can.?
Performance on tests and high grades should not be the sole reason for college entrance.
⬆️?

Your statement assumes that inner city kids are also minorities. We need to move past this 80’s mentality and stop using racism to ‘fight’ racism. Merit based admittance is the only fair way forward.

I am certain that you know and understands exactly why affirmative action is needed and a good thing, but you’re likely just a maga white supremacist against anything that could level the playing field…. You people have your moment of glory right now, so savor it, but it won’t last, and decency will return to this diverse and culturally rich land…

Yes it has been. Many of us fell victim to affirmative action in the 70s.

Does this mean college basketball teams will have to acccept more white kids?

No. It means the opposite of that. Only the top performing kids (via a meritocratic, non-equity process) earn their places on the teams.

/s/ so definitely the transgender males should be on all women teams…right? Since they are the “better players” at those sports….

That is ridiculous. Women’s or Girls sports are for Females. Males don’t qualify. To clarify genetically if you are XX you are female, if you are XY you are male. All of the drugs and surgery in the world will not change that. How you identify will not change that. Therefore genetic XY individuals don’t qualify for Women’s or Girls Sports.

So then all the kids get the same preparation and educational opportunities whether they live in Beverly Hills or Willits. And, every kid gets to take the SAT the same number of times despite their parents’ income.
In this meritocratic approach you suggest, we miss out on some great minds just because of their zip code.

A truly meritocratic approach actually levels the playing field for income groups. That’s why STEM is disproportionately composed of upwardly mobile minorities (some definitely more than others) while law and other path-to-power fields are disproportionately composed of the wealthy and well connected. Now there is a growing contingent of DEI beneficiaries joining that elite, with neither group really justifying with performance the power, wealth, and prestige they have been groomed for.
Should add, it’s not too difficult to find STEM schools that outperform the ivy league, and that is a direct result of the rot of favoritism that has been endemic to the ivy league since long before DEI, although certainly not helped by it.

Good point. The NBA, NFL, and Major League Baseball as well. They are all merit based as it should be. There are genetic and social reasons “minorities” dominate these sports, but these athletes are the best in world in their chosen field. AS IT SHOULD BE

Ha, ha, ha. The Democrat little turds getting their fair share finally. And as for the commenters making disparaging comments about not enough white basketball players, y’all dumbazzes. Your elder party Democrat leaders made sure to get rid of Humboldt football. This resulted in a bunch of good guys (black males mainly) not having an opportunity to come to Humboldt because of their athletic skills which would have enabled them to get a degree for their future. Typical kkk founding Democrats, espousing equal rights for all while crossing their Lily white fingers behind their hunched backs. Losers. Grow a brain, bring back football. PS, white men can’t jump btw.

This is a great first step. However, I certainly hope the secretary also goes after woke BS indoctrination, that has made a college degree, any degree or level of degree a disgrace instead of a positive line on a resume. Please do away with the “make up my own degree because I’m not seeing a regular degree that fits me” nonsense. I’d rather hire someone with burglary, tweaker or escort or almost anything before hiring a college graduate these days. At least the others have life experience instead of the crap that is “learned” in college and they generally work harder.

Maybe we are getting a little off topic, but some people go to school to get an education; some go to school to get a bigger paycheck; and some go to school because of societal expectations.
I agree that jobs and degrees can often be decoupled. Few people who get Art History, or even, History of Sex Workers, degrees are going to work in their field. That’s ok.
But, I have found that a degree demonstrates a high tolerance for bullshit. So that at least, is something.

About damn time. I graduated with high honors from Humboldt State and never received a single scholarship. White males excluded – unless maybe an athlete. I won a major writing award no student had ever received at the school. Not even a mention in the hippy newspaper.
Worse yet, I returned years later and applied for grad school. Four excellent references and straight A’s in the discipline (and all associated disciplines). DENIED.
This is the reality of that corrupt school. Feminists and activist Marxist profs rule. You could be the worst essayist on campus, but if you are a female POC from L.A. you get a free ride grad program. Evil.
