[UPDATE 8:21 p.m.] Search Continues for Missing Whale Gulch Man as Law Enforcement and SAR Converges on Remote Area of the Lost Coast

Dave Taylor

The search for missing Whale Gulch resident Dave Taylor continues today, with the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), Mendocino Search and Rescue, and Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office personnel assisting in additional searching efforts.

Dave Taylor, an 84-year-old Mendocino County resident, was last seen on February 6 after returning from a trip to the hospital for medical issues. Authorities say Taylor is known to be a reclusive individual who likes to spend time alone, so his absence for a few days did not initially raise any alarms. It wasn’t until February 18 that a concerned Whale Gulch fire department member reported Taylor missing after not being able to reach him.

Search efforts were quickly underway as officials attempted to locate anyone that may have seen or heard from the missing man.

Search and rescue teams have returned to the remote area today, with a coordinator and 8 volunteers searching the roads and areas north of Whale Gulch into Humboldt County. “We’re doing an ‘every place search’ right now,” said Mendocino County Sheriff Matt Kendall. “We just don’t have a starting point, with the exception of possibly the store in Shelter Cove, but we can’t say 100% that was his vehicle.”

Surveillance footage showed a vehicle similar to one Dave Taylor was last associated with in the parking lot of the Shelter Cove General Store on February 6, at approximately 3:15 p.m. Law enforcement have been unable to confirm whether Taylor was in the vehicle or if the vehicle is the same vehicle associated with the missing man. Authorities have located surveillance footage of a two-door vehicle that they believe may belong to Taylor, from the afternoon of February 6, west of the last confirmed known whereabouts of Taylor.  Though Sheriff Kendall believes the vehicle is the same one associated with the missing Whale Gulch man, law enforcement cannot confirm it was Taylor driving the vehicle as the person inside did not exit the vehicle on camera.

Additionally, the 90’s style, two-door Nissan Pathfinder is not registered to Taylor, complicating the search efforts. Sheriff Kendall is urging anyone with information on where Taylor may have purchased the vehicle to come forward.

Yesterday, a California Highway Patrol (CHP) helicopter out of Redding searched the area for any signs of Taylor or the vehicle, but did not locate either, according to Jon Clevenger from the Garberville CHP office.

The search continues today as law enforcement from both Mendocino and Humboldt counties converge on the rural area near the Humboldt/Mendocino border on the Lost Coast, where Taylor was last seen. “[All the media attention] is getting [the public] to open their eyes,” Kendall said. “But what we need to do is we need to find that vehicle so that we can have a starting point.”

Authorities are asking the public to report any information that could aid in locating the missing Whale Gulch man. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office can be reached at 707-463-4086.

UPDATE 8:21 p.m.: According to Diana Totten this evening, Taylor has still not been located.

Thank you for trying to help…

I recognize the vehicle and area in the craigslist post…

I remember seeing it…

That car was broke down on the along the east side of redwood drive, just North of the 101 overpass in Garberville…

Just north of the intersection of the first 101 northbound offramp and Redwood drive, to be more precise…

I also saw people associated with the vehicle being assisted shortly thereafter, by others, like the next day or so…

Mr. Taylor was not among them, that I could see…
And that is a Honda, in the craigslist post, not a Nissan…
Again, thank you for trying to help…

I’m wondering now if Mr Taylor may have taken Old Briceland Road, the back way into Garberville, from Briceland, to possibly pick up a prescription at the pharmacy on Sprowel Creek Road, or for whatever reason, since the vehicle may have had registration issues… That would have been the stealth route…

Just a thought…

We spent the day looking for his vehicle the other day, as far as the cove, and out to and around four corners…

We checked the Black sands parking area,

Now I wish that we would have checked by the little black sands parking area, for any sign of a vehicle leaving the roadway…

And I was also wondering when the Kings peak Road was closed to thru traffic, in case Mr Taylor could have gone that way, before it was closed…

Kings Peak at P.M. 2.0 due to a slip out:

FROM SINKHOLES TO SNOW: HUMBOLDT COUNTY ROAD CREWS ARE GETTING A WORKOUT

Since this was reported just very shortly after Mr Taylor’s last known sighting, AND is WITHIN just a few miles of his last known location, regardless of whether he was last seen at the Whitethorn Post Office, or he was last seen at the Shelter Cove General Store…

Is this just a coincidence, or does this warrant some additional attention and searching in the area of the slide, possibly over the bank, and/or on the north side of the slide, trying to go around, since Mr Taylor, if he had made it north of the slipout, for whatever reason, may have not been able to return that way, and tried to go around the hard way, instead…

Seems like it would maybe be worth considering…

It appears close to his location of the SCGS, but it’s actually quite far, the road is closed closer to the Wilder Ridge end and not close to Shelter Cove Road. Regardless, all roads in SC have been checked.

Thank you for that information…

I did figure that out last evening, as we went and searched the area…

I hadn’t been out that way in years…

The slide as shown in the RHBB article is clearly in an area of pavement, but no slipout, AND no pavement, whatsoever, at all, was to be found along the first 3 miles that we traveled starting at shelter cove road, as my merely coincidental theory quickly unraveled…?‍♂️?‍♂️
An unusual, highly unlikely coincidence, but that’s all it was, after all…

Mile markers on Kings Peak Road do (also) begin at Shelter Cove road, and we first passed mile marker 1, and mile marker 2, etc., as they increased northbound as is usual…

My hunch is that the Kings Peak Road section that begins at Shelter Cove road was constructed long AFTER the construction of Kings Peak Road which began much longer ago, from the intersection of Wilder Ridge Road, which would have had its own previous mile markers, southbound…
We have another place, and another route we will be checking today, that I decided on yesterday…

Then, that’s it, we won’t be doing more active searching…

I’m sure they already have but did the police do a flock camera search for that car over the entire county yet? I’m pretty sure I saw that Nissan Pathfinder in Ukiah on Monday.

Nope. Look closer, you’ll see no gap at the point where the rear door would open.
the 2dr version is rare, but out there.
