Pro-Zionist Billboard in Arcata Torn Down Overnight

The formerly pro Zionism billboard is seen here, blank, against the backdrop of forest and early morning fog in Arcata, Saturday morning.

Acrata’s new “CALL ME A ZIONIST…” billboard was found vandalized Saturday Morning, leaving torn remnants at the location. [Photo by Ryan Hutson]

Locals woke this morning to discover that Arcata’s most controversial new addition – a billboard requested by one local woman and paid for by Bay Area crowdfunding efforts – had been ripped down. An unknown billboard vigilante or vigilantes took matters into their own hands and removed the image in the dead of night leaving only tattered remnants of the image bunched at the bottom of the sign.

After a new billboard along Highway 101 at the southern edge of Arcata reading, “CALL ME A ZIONIST. IT ONLY MAKES ME PROUDER” stirred controversy, the sign was shredded Friday night or early Saturday mourning, leaving a blank wooden background where the controversial political message had been.

The billboard’s placement was in part the result of efforts by Tamar Krigel, an Arcata resident of Israeli descent, according to the Jewish News of Northern California  (JN). Krigel told JN that after last spring’s Cal Poly Humboldt student protests—where demonstrators called for a ceasefire in Gaza and supported the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement—she felt compelled to bring a pro-Israel message to the area.

Since the billboard had been set up, strong objections to its message circulated on social media, matched by an equal or greater approval of the billboard expressed by supporters.

At this time, it is unknown who removed the billboard slogan, and why. Arcata Police Department advised that the matter was being assessed by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, which was unavailable for comment.

The billboard sponsored by Code Blue and White is located at the Highway 101 on-ramp south of Arcata, facing the southbound lanes.

Lasting only 4 days, the short-lived pro Israel advertisement drew immediate ire from college town residents and student activists, which saw intense student protests last spring in opposition to Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip.

Following the billboard’s installation, activists and dissenting community members showed up to the Arcata City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 4th, lobbying the Arcata City Council (ACC) to have the billboard removed.

In addition, not one, but two petitions to have it removed had been circulated. The first petition, set up via open petition.org was removed by the platform shortly after going live, according to anonymous activists who initiated the petition titled, “Take Down the Zionism Billboard on Hwy 101” but did not last long.

Two petitions were launched in an attempt to remove the billboards through a formal process, but ultimately, neither were needed.

That failed petition was quickly supplanted by a second petition via Change.org. that had only gained 72 signatures by the time the billboard was ripped down today. The petition called on community members to denounce the billboard’s statement: “Its genocidal messaging does not reflect the values of this community, and is likely stationed there as a petty response to the pro Palestinian movement and protests which recently took place at our local university.”

We reached out for comment to members of the Arcata City Council and pro Gaza activists but, with short notice on a Saturday, did not receive a response before publishing. We also reached out to Tamar Krigel who succeeded in bringing the billboard to the area. She declined to comment.

Maybe threatening Palestinians and anti-genocide activists with a big FU billboard wasn’t the “unifying” message those who put it up thought it would be.
Or maybe they put up the billboard so it would be torn down and they vould claim to be the real victims and not the 100,000+ people the Zionists have murdered in Gaza.

And by claiming victim again, you know, the billboard that illegally went down, my God! It must be anti semetic. The Palestinians are semetic, too. Anybody who gives a shit about crimes against humanity- and the Jews should know all about this- that somehow Israel is exempt and via Zionists with the continuing and unforgettable stain happening now. I don’t see anywhere in the Torah, The Bible and the Qu-ran where the same God says He’s ok with this. Judgement Day is coming for all of the above who think power and money is going to save them from the reckoning.

Uh, have you read the Torah/Bible or Koran? There’s a hell of a lot of endorsement of genocide in there. That’s how extremists on all sides justify their violence.

Yes I have read them. The redeaming values of The Torah, The Bible, the Qu-ran is that the whole Creator of everything reaches out to us. He keeps trying- He made it simple for us. Listen to what Abraham, Jesus and Mohammed peace be with them all. No, God is not ok with genocide.

I agree with you there are redeeming elements to all the holy texts, and I wish more people saw the type of Creator that you do. The unfortunate fact is that all those texts portray God as both perfectly loving, forgiving, and benevolent while also commanding people to wipe out entire nations from existence, chop off limbs or execute people for minor crimes, etc. Extremists pick out those parts and leave behind the loving and forgiving parts.

It’s mostly in the Old Testaments and Torah. The Quran has very little reference of violence -and the violence references usually only refer to when stories of past wars are recounted or telling Muslims how to deal with corrupt Muslims-. The Old Testament has a God that basically hates humanity and is willing to kill everyone and anyone but prophets and angels convince God not to. Then God essentially has an ego death and becomes the merciful god that is seen in the New Testament. The Torah has the most vengeful and mean-spirited God, but also does not really advocate for annihilation of others. The The Quran also has a few lines that refer to violence, but they are referring to specific incidences in history (the verse is telling a recounting of something that happened) or they are referring to Muslims fighting against idolatry/Muslims who say they are Muslim but don’t follow Islam tenet/other Muslims who oppress other Muslims and/or when defending oneself from prosecution.

Anyone who says the three main religion’s holy books advocate for violence against others is vastly misinterpreting the holy book’s message. I’ve yet to read or learn of a holy book that advocates for the death of others. Most holy books are just about recounting “historical” stories and giving instructions on how to live a pious life.

Yes we agree! Zionism is about replacing the people who are there. Zionism is about self deportation. Kinda like the grandchildren of deported Mexicans going to Spain and demanding land, and bombing Barcelona. There is an obvious irony that this lady spent $40 grand on the billboard way up here instead of airplane tickets and a condo.

They were stealing Palestinian homes, which is most def a form of terror. So that’s kinda’ like spreading hometheft and homelessness, and not good vibes. Can’t just move them. Put them in isolation, and they get weird and even more righteous in their views.Put them next to someone and in three days their trying to sell that person a story about how even tho they’ve only been in town a couple days, they now own the house a whole family is living in and has for generations so the fam has to kick it down the road… Or at the very least they’ll start erecting billboards.

Such bigots, not liking pride in genocide ? There are different definitions of Zionism for different people, yes. But in knowing the person who put this up (Tamar) , they meant the worst possible interpretation of Zionism: Ie a state that explicitly preferences Jewish people over non-Jews. She’s called for the genocide and ethnic cleansing of the Gaza strip multiple times, explicitly saying they should kill everyone, “men, women, and children.”
I’m glad the wind blew it off.

Political power trump’s moral fiber. Look at the ADL’s brave stance against Musk’s Seig Hiel. Yes, the leadership across the political spectrum is selfish and short sighted.

Is suggest it’s because they’ve all learned that they can just keep their followers mindlessly enraged at the “other” and never have to deliver anything of significance that might require some personal sacrifice.

Because we all chose tribalism and bickering, “political leadership” has become a leisure sport for the gilded class to pursue their vanity in.

Yeah, NO! Abortions, however you look at them at NOT ‘genocide’!
Unborn humans, unless only of one ethnicity, etc., do not qualify with any of the descriptions below.
From the moderate, Britannica dictionary:
‘genocide, the deliberate and systematic destruction of a group of people because of their ethnicitynationality, religion, or race. The term, derived from the Greek genos (“race,” “tribe,” or “nation”) and the Latin cide (“killing”), was coined by Raphael Lemkin, a Polish-born jurist who served as an adviser to the U.S. Department of War during World War II

Margaret Sanger founded planned parenthood to “cull” the black population. That sounds like genocide to me .?
this is from the planned parenthood website:
“Sanger also believed in eugenics — an inherently racist and ableist ideology that labeled
certain people unfit to have children. Eugenics is the theory that society can be improved
through planned breeding for “desirable traits” like intelligence and industriousness.
Margaret Sanger was so intent on her mission to advocate for birth control that she chose
to align herself with ideologies and organizations that were explicitly ableist and white
supremacist. In doing so, she undermined reproductive freedom and caused irreparable
damage to the health and lives of generations of Black people, Latino people, Indigenous
people, immigrants, people with disabilities, people with low incomes, and many others.”

A quote from Sanger: “ We don’t want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population. “

Thanks. I plan to look into that.
As we know, organizations are often formed with various objectives, then they become better or worse (often the latter) from the initial aspirations.
In the case of Planned Parenthood it has been a vital organization, serving the needs of many, without consequential regard to race or even economic status. So, without regard to history, my earlier comment stands.

None of this happened in a vacuum. The festival was an IDF aged audience, at a strange place to permit a festival in hindsight. The balance of the casualties were settler families and IDF, who fought and killed a couple thousand Hamas.
You can see in the footage the perpetrators of October 7 essentially broke out of a prison to stage the attack.
When Trump stands next to Netanyahu and says he want to relocate the 2 million people in Gaza and make a resort you have to wonder what was the plan all along.

Settler families were not the ones killed on Oct 7, unless you’re considering all Israeli families to be settler families. According to the UN, international law, and the Palestinian Authority, settlers are those who are illegally residing in the West Bank, which is not where the Oct 7 attack was. Most of the Israeli communities attacked on Oct 7 were leftist border communities, which is partly why the far right government abandoned them and decided to wage a campaign of genocidal revenge instead of immediately negotiating for the release of hostages.

That is blatantly wrong. “A two-month investigation by The Times uncovered painful new details, establishing that the attacks against women were not isolated events but part of a broader pattern of gender-based violence on Oct. 7.

Relying on video footage, photographs, GPS data from mobile phones and interviews with more than 150 people, including witnesses, medical personnel, soldiers and rape counselors, The Times identified at least seven locations where Israeli women and girls appear to have been sexually assaulted or mutilated.” https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/28/world/middleeast/oct-7-attacks-hamas-israel-sexual-violence.html See the UN’s report here also. https://press.un.org/en/2024/sc15621.doc.htm

And that’s the problem most of these students have no concept of the history of these countries. of the day by day back and forth for 75 years there. The constant bombardment from Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Lybia, Iraq, Iran, and Palestine. The countless Israeli school children blown up on buses sniper attacks and rockets. The constant fear and violence. And let me put this out there I am anti war and anti genocide wanting peace and responsibility from both sides. Wanting civilian Palestinians to be protected. There is no denying that what happened there is wrong. But these extremist views and hate speech coming from one of the most liberal capitals of the country is disturbing and insane. Some of these students were born after 911 their entire life was in the span of Americas longest war. The most easily ignored war in history but like most of our conflicts since the late seventies it was against Islamic extremists. No one’s referencing any of that it’s only Israel right . To kill hundreds of thousands for political and petroleum gain is alright but not for the survival of a whole race of historically bullied peoples. And if you feel so strongly about this go to Gaza and stand in front of a tank, go tell the Jews what you think of them instead of so confidently cowering behind your child slave mine phone. I mean the people you are trying to protect will immediately murder you because newsflash they hate Americans just as much as Israelis. And if your a woman a little boy, trans, or a homosexual you will also be killed or raped. Oh wait sorry no rapes occurred I forgot. I think that the billboard was a little strange and out of place but I think that this communities response was much more offensive and racist. You re in a bubble that is #stopthegenocide but can’t even see the fascist undertones that come from trying to silence and vilify a minority group

It’s not even comparable, but would a trance dance MDMA music festival be a good idea right up next to Corcoran, or Susanville-High Desert? If those prisons were full of 2 million displaced angry people?
I pointed out the obvious that the music fest was not “Women and Children” it was young men and women, and yes, it was a strategic target for Hamas in that EVERYBODY except Hasidic Jews serve in the IDF for a few years after turning 18.

Recent polls show that 80% of Jewish Israelis support this genocide, American funded mass slaughter or indigenous peoples on their land. Wake up to the real state of Israel. Just like the state of America. We deserve Trump. He represents the colonial mentality of our failing State in a very transparent manner. Get ready for the demise of both nations. It’s a coming!

Actually, probably yes. Read “Zealot” by Reza Azlon, an historical perspective on the political history in the Levant around Jesus of Nazareth’s time. The stories of the homeless kid from the sticks have been embellished over time, especially by Paul’s mystical fantasies created to try and popularize the religion in Southern Europe 300 years later.
J-Naz was likely more militant than he’s given credit for. He was elevated to leader of a rebellious sect after a certain Joseph was executed on the road into town. The group was famous for an attempt to kick the priests out of the temple for hosting a flea market of sorts, selling sacrificial tributes. These Jewish priests were an extension of kind of a “Coalition Authority” granted power by the occupying Romans. Not popular, but go against them and you get crucified as a warning to the rest of the population.

Vandalism is wrong, and the situation shouldn’t have been handled like this. But I’m glad it’s gone. It did nothing to promote meaningful dialogue or to bring about a peaceful solution.

On a side note: It would be great to see all the billboards come down.

The choice to make a statement consistent with what you feel, freedom of speech, was taken down by someone that didn’t like their ability to speak freely. If it was a pro liberal statement would you want it taken down because someone didn’t agree with you?

There’s a reason: location, location, location. Unless you take Old Arcata Rd or Samoa Blvd or maybe even South G, you MUST go past it when coming from Cal Poly. Why not have a giant dissenting billboard at the place that made news in the various university Pali protests? Right were they can’t avoid seeing the message unless they purposely travel a different route. Or cover their eyes.
However this isn’t the first billboard the same group has put up. One further south near L.A was replaced by UnityLab who put up several Free Gaza billboards across the country. One of them in West Virginia. Yeah…go figure.
This one may be gone, but it’s already viral online where it’ll reside until the end of the internet.

I am not surprised. I am personally happy with the act. And, yes, I recognize the challenge to free speech that tearing the sign down poses. It is a good sign, so to speak, these days, to see that protests of many kinds are active. We need that if we are to salvage the best parts of our country’s work to push back on the forces of power, wealth and cultural destruction arrayed against the people’s interests.
After what Israel did to the Palestinians, I am challenged to have any sympathy for any one of them who does not condemn their government’s action…. like I condemn my country’s part in the GENOCIDE!
Let’s hope the woman/ messenger, who glamorized herself as worthy of a billboard (could have done it without her image, or such a provocative message) has second thoughts, to find a more productive way to engage the community.

Good! Glad to see somebody has the gusto anymore! There used to be a group called TIA ( Truth In Advertising) and they would go around altering offensive billboards by excellently pasting in words or covering words to change the message. They were extremely funny, professional-grade pranksters. Sometimes the new message would remain for months while people had to process the altered message. Hilarious and educational!! Wished that would happen here but Hey- urgency sometimes leads to less intellectual expression …and ripping that crap down is cool too. At least somebody did something and Thank You!

The Kingdom of Israel ceased to exist over 2,500 years ago — only Zionist zealots and idiots believe it provides continuity and justification for the modern day state of Israel which was created by military conquest driven by a deliberate campaign of terror and ethnic cleansing — but keep parroting the creation myths for the nation of Israel if it makes you feel better.

So destroying property is a valid response to speech you oppose. So what is next, key their car, brick through a window, punch a nazi? So can the nazi punch back?
