Governor Declares State of Emergency After Massive Quake in Humboldt County

Broken water lines cause damage at Shop Smart in Redway [Video by Lisa Music]

After a 7.0 quake slammed into Humboldt County and surrounding areas at 10:44 this morning and, as of this posting, 58 aftershocks (larger that 2.5 with the largest magnitude 4.7) followed, the damage, though painful for many residents and businesses, was surprisingly limited given the quake’s magnitude.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported and power is on to most PG&E customers.

However, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency not only for Humboldt County but also for Del Norte and Mendocino Counties

Businesses in Southern Humboldt seemed the hardest hit with Redway’s Shop Smart grocery store taking damage not only from the shaking but from water pipes feeding their sprinkler system that broke during the quake.

But, fortunately, at least in the case of this indoor garden, Humboldt’s signature product was mostly undamaged.

Readers:

During emergencies, every second counts, and getting accurate information to you is our top priority. However, today after the 7.0 quake, our website faced an incredible surge of over 4,000 viewers at one time that subsided only a little and lasted for hours, overwhelming our shared server. This left us unable to update crucial details when you needed them most.

To ensure that Redheaded Blackbelt can provide uninterrupted, real-time updates during emergencies, we need to upgrade to a dedicated server. A server just for our website will allow us to handle high traffic and deliver the critical information you rely on—without delays, without downtime.

This upgrade comes with significant costs, and we’re turning to you, our community, for help. Your support has always been the backbone of Redheaded Blackbelt. If you value having timely, trustworthy news during moments that matter most, please consider contributing to this very essential improvement.

As a news reporter, few things are more concerning than knowing critical tsunami information was emerging earlier today and being unable to update you all in real-time. Please help us fix this critical issue.

Together, we can make sure that no one is left in the dark when it matters most.

Thank you for your support,
Kym Kemp

Water damage is almost as bad as fire damage.

“Massive” is a bit of a stretch. The much smaller one in Rio Dell a couple years back did far more damage. Glad it was offshore and everyone seems to be ok.

Why these stores have not figured out a way to secure those glass bottles is a mystery.

They fall and break every major earthquake we have.

Oh I knew something must have happened to the server or something today because I kept trying to refresh to get reliable tsunami info as we ran on foot uphill, and then opted to risk a drive near the ocean, but it didn’t work. I can only imagine how heartbroken you were by this Kym 🙁 I SO hope the community pulls together to help you get this critical equipment because RHBB is the most reliable news source on the north coast!

I’m pleased to report that although several bottles of A-1 was damaged in this “massive” event all the Tabasco made it through unscathed, but we’re still waiting for news about Melinda’s.

Not sure what you mean.
The video was used to show the impact of the quake. Most legal indoor grows have to have cameras, and its a good idea for thieves.
But yes we are all just dumboldts here, please make sure you stay away. You obviously dont get our culture, nor the purpose of this reporting. So just go away please.
Us dummies have our own radio station, local news and vfds in every neighborhood. What a bunch of idiots.

Not really. People can opt not to buy any of that merchandise but the powers held by government can force people to pay without a by-your‐leave or getting anything at all in return.

That inbred bonus baby would declare an emergency for an upset stomach.
