Four-Vehicle Collision Causes Traffic Delays on Southbound 101

A four-car collision on southbound 101 caused significant delays to the morning commute. [All photos by Ryan Hutson]
The #1 lane was blocked shortly after the crash, causing traffic disruptions. Humboldt Towing was called to remove two of the vehicles, which sustained major front-end damage. By 8:53 a.m., CHP confirmed that the roadway had been cleared and normal traffic flow resumed. However, motorists experienced delays during the peak morning commute as emergency services and towing operations were conducted.
The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.

When did we get an Arco, and where is it? ?
I was wondering the same thing
Not familiar with the location of ARCO gas stations – where is this?
Hi Pat, it’s definitely the old redwood mill between Arcata and eureka across from the car dealership. I think it’s an attractive set of buildings on the bay, mostly used for random yard space now, as most old mills are. It has good lines, in my opinion. Hope to see it put to good use some day soon.
Tailgater karma strikes again 🙂
talk what you know no one was tailgating! A semi carrying redwoods turned on the turn off blocking the lane and the car in the front went from slowing down needing to come to a complete stop because the truck was sticking out causing every one to slam on their brakes suddenly and it wasn’t enough time for anyone traveling at the suggested speed. the truck didn’t stop he kept going though he caused the accident.
When did we get an Arco and where is it located? Glad to hear there was no major injuries.
The “ARCO” of which they speak is Arcata Redwood Company ?
The ARCO being referred to is the old Arcata Redwood Company mill just south of the construction at Indianola
Remember when they used mile post markers and cross streets to let you know locations. Arco? Did a search of acros near me from the arco site and got 0 results. Looked at yelp and got 0. Maybe it’s too new or maybe it’s no longer an arco?
Arco – where’s that? The photo looks like Indianola/Bayside area?
Ok, I’m betting it’s this one:
fwiw, ARCO is probably Arcata Redwood Company.
You might be right. My guess is that somebody saw ARCO on an abbreviated report and leaped to an un-verified conclusion which resulted in a sub-standard report. Never heard of this phantom ARCO station.
Well ARCO might be a gas station (haven’t seen one around here in a long while)… or it might be the old Arcata Redwood COmpany plant along the bay. ARCO.
By the look of the photo… Arcata Redwood Company.
(Allegedly) a 50 mph zone.

CHP was patrolling it the other day, and were busily writing tickets.
The accidents were near the Indianola cutoff in the Southbound lanes. Multiple rear-end collisions. I was driving North at about 830AM when I passed the accident scene. The Southbound lanes were at a standstill as I drove by and cars may have been backed up a mile. .
More distracted drivers in the alleged “Safety Zone”.
Tailgater Latma strikes again 😉
I would throw out there I drove my boss to Harper’s today to get his vehicle and got stuck there for an insane amount of time trying to pull out and exit. I’m not sure how much all the safety improvements really helped the highway.
I’d like to see an overpass at Indianola Ave.
Did anyone die? No? Then the safety improvements have helped.
There has never been an Arco gas station in Humboldt County, but there were Richfield gas stations before the merger of Atlantic and Richfield stations becoming Arco in 1971.
Tailgater karma strikes again andagain 🙂
As others have correctly pointed out, Arco is old-timer talk for the offices of closed Arcata Redwood. I enjoyed the flashback to a term ‘everyone’ knew at the time. So many folks not being familiar with the reference is a reminder many have come and gone in the last 20 years; bit of nostalgia I guess.
I like Lisa’s comeback more-accurate edit.
