Collier Safety Roadside Rest Area to Close Long-Term Due to Water Distribution Issues
This is a press release from Caltrans District 2:
Beginning Monday, September 16th at 3 p.m., the Collier Safety Roadside Rest Area (SRRA) will undergo a long-term closure due to water distribution issues. Water for the rest area is drawn directly from the Klamath River and used for potable sources and irrigation. Caltrans is partnering with the Klamath River Renewal Corporation to resolve the issues.
There is no current estimated time for reopening the facility. Motorists are advised to note this long-term closure and make alternative plans for stops during travel. Rest area availability for the state can be found on QuickMap. Caltrans District 2 thanks the local communities and traveling public for their patience and understanding during this closure.
Please contact District 2 Public Information if you have questions regarding this closure via phone at 530-225-3426 or email at [email protected].

The klamath river?
This is the Randolph Collier rest area on I-5 where it crosses the Klamath, not the Collier Tunnel rest area on US-199 (which is named, indirectly, after the same person).
Randolph Collier was a State Senator in the late 50s representing the North Coast and had the nickname “Father of the California freeways”.
Water distribution issues?? Bullshit, the state is going broke. They’ll shut down every service before they fire a single bureaucrat. Remind me, how businesses fled the “Golden State last year.

This has to be the most BS answer given for that rest area since the turn of the millennium. It’s always water problems. Always. They’ve had over 20 years to fix it. The proposed 199 tunnel will not take 1/4 of the time to actually drill, yet they can’t bother to fix this. I have an idea; let some of the grow op guys take a crack at it. They should get a water system up and running in a few weeks.
Also, why is the water coming from the Klamath? The Smith River is much closer. Why not make a deal with Oregon, draw from one of their lakes, and truck it in, because that’s how it’s getting there. Or hell, just pay MCSD or HCSD for some extra water from the Mad River?
It’s obvious to me that nobody in that division of government gives two shits about fixing a pretty important stop for a lot of people.
There not talking about the 199 rest area. Its the rest area on hwy 5 N/o Yreka
You are correct, but There are two Collier “safety” rest areas. Collier Tunnel Rest Area on 199, and Randall E. Collier rest area that’s referred to in the photo. The former just reopened after a considerable amount of time for “potable water problems” that never end. How long it stays open this time is anyone’s guess.
25 years back I worked on the water for the hwy 199 rest area. The water comes from a natural spring about 1/4 mile up the mountain on the old hwy ,Oregon mtn. Rd.
Issues??
Double speak for government problems that impact ? us. No regard for the taxpayers that need those facilities regularly.
The river flows right past this rest stop – within yards – yet the state can’t locate a water source.
Beam me UP, Scotty. There’s no sign of intelligent life down here.
All things considered, they could have had a couple of centuries worth of water from what the upstream dams just let go with. But that would be too easy.
You have to remember
who you are dealing with. All the old school CT workers are gone. Now you have a new breed of text book clowns .
I’m imagining they are having water distribution issues because the water is of such poor clarity due to flushing from Klamath damn removal.
They didn’t say it, but that’s what I figured.
Imagine trying to filter the Klamath river below the damn removals this year for domestic use.
Imagine washing your hands in the rest stop bathroom and seeing brown water come out.
Things will get better, but this summer the water was absolutely horrible like chocolate milk
Exactly. I knew when we drove by it the firdt time that the muddied waters had to affect the water.
