[Update: Photos; Viewer Discretion is Advised] Search for Human Remains in Eel River Underway After Swimmer Discovers What Appears to Be a Human Tibia

InvestigationUsing cadaver dogs, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office personnel searched a stretch of the South Fork of the Eel River north of Redway today for human remains. The search was prompted by the discovery of what is believed to be a human tibia bone on July 6 by a Redway resident swimming in the Eel River.

In an interview with Redheaded Blackbelt, the resident stated that during the record-breaking heatwave, they took to the river in an attempt to cool off. During their swim, the resident noticed what appeared to be a bone sticking out from a sand bank where the water had created a sand cliff from river flow erosion. Initially thinking the bone belonged to an animal, the resident pulled the bone from the sand for a closer inspection.

The bone, they said, appeared to be a human tibia with the top of the bone intact, featuring what looked like a meniscus. The lower portion of the bone was broken near the ankle area. Realizing that they had likely found human remains, the resident decided to leave the area untouched in case other remains were present.

Upon returning to their residence, they contacted the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. To confirm the remains as human, the resident sent photos to HCSO. A deputy was dispatched from McKinleyville to retrieve the potential remains from the resident that evening; however, no search of the location area occurred according to the person who found the remains.

HCSO Investigator Mike Fridley stated during a phone interview with Redheaded Blackbelt on July 9, that although the coroner had deemed the bone unlikely to belong to a human, the decision was made to contact an anthropologist out of an abundance of caution.

The Redway resident was confident that the bone they found was human and told Redheaded Blackbelt that the bone did not appear to have been in the river a prolonged time due to its condition. They noted the bone appeared to have an intact meniscus, which is a piece of cartilage attached to the shinbone (tibia) that helps stabilize the knee.

On Monday evening, nine days after the bone was discovered, the resident said they were contacted by HCSO stating that they now believed the bone to be human. They stated that HCSO informed them that personnel would conduct a search of the area for additional remains.

In a press release issued on July 16, HCSO stated, “To conduct further confirmation of the bone’s origin, the Coroner’s Office elected to have the bone examined by anthropologists, who have deemed the bone as possibly human—further examination is pending.”

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office lists 63 people in their missing persons database, though countless others may go unreported. In neighboring Mendocino County, Terry McInnes, 65, was reported missing earlier this year in April. His empty vehicle was found in the East Branch of the South Fork of the Eel River, where he is believed to have attempted to ford the river in high water conditions, approximately 20 miles upriver from where the current cadaver search is underway.

Further testing of the bone and any additional remains found will be needed to identify their origins. If human, DNA testing will likely be used in an attempt to identify the remains.

A collaboration between HCSO and Othram Labs, a DNA lab that uses genealogical data to identify remains, has helped solve multiple unsolved cases and unidentified remains since they partnered in 2023.

On 7/6/2024, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of bones discovered in the South Fork of the Eel River near Redway. Upon initial investigation, photos were viewed by the Coroner’s Office and determined unlikely to be human. A deputy responded to the scene, interviewed the witness, and collected the bone for further investigation. To conduct further confirmation of the bone’s origin, the Coroner’s Office elected to have the bone examined by anthropologists, who have deemed the bone as possibly human—further examination is pending. Additional follow-up searches are underway at the scene to locate further remains, with the use of deputies and two cadaver search dogs.

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to call the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at (707) 445-7251 or the Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip line at (707) 268-2539.

Typically that’s a standard reply. They poo poo away evidence people call with really valid concerns and it is dismissed. Glad that the person who found the remains stayed vigilant and insisted. Thank you for your kindness and may this person’s family members find some closure.

We need someone to run against Honsal. He put our community’s best tracker, Diana, on portapotty duty when children were missing. He never searched or allowed to be searched the Myers flat property where the young mother disappeared on new year’s. And the only evidence she left alive was a very dodgy photo that could have been any blond woman.
His oversight of oes is deplorable. He needs replaced.

I suspect he hung out with Eric. Probably new the people out Stafford too. The police released a video identifying Johnny Davis making it ok to say his name. And not enough to convict. They havnt done that with this guy. He lives in his mommy’s back yard by chevron. Sorry about your friend.

Sad to say but the subject I have been discussing is about to get worse. Fortuna police I get why you didn’t belive me. I did the same exact thing. In 94 roughly I lived on Carson woods rd fortuna. Someone came by with a wild story.they said they picked up a hitchhiker at cooper gulch eureka the night before.the guy was covered in blood and admitted that he murdered Someone. Seriously unbelievable. Six or eight years later I see a dog brought back part of a body in cooper gulch. I belive the disc golf course was put there after clearing brush. I realized then that the story I heard was true. Jump forward and I meet a person living 3 blocks from where said person was dropped off. And get poisoned repeatedly . That took alot longer then I care to admit to figure out. Like to tamper with vehicles also. Torn brakes. And ruining wheel bearings.

A deputy was dispatched from McKinleyville. Why would they even admit that?

Would you say that if the missing remains belonged to a member of your family?

I think the deputy from McKinleyville was probably the only one available that was not working a case at that time. We have very few deputies for a large county, so it sends them all over the place.

And yet the article referenced Terry McInnes who’s vehicle was in the East Branch of the South Fork upstream of Redway.

Terry McInnes’ vehicle was found, from what I gather, far, far, South of Redway near the Mendocino County line, downstream off of a ford somewhere near the end of Milstead Rd, in the East Branch of the South Fork Eel River, which is a tributary to the South Fork Eel River. The bone was found in the South Fork Eel River, North of Redway, which is a long, long way downstream of where his truck was found…

It’s remotely possible that if Terry McInnes entered the East Branch where his truck was found, or anywhere in the South Fork Eel River South of where the bone was found, or even elsewhere in the East Branch, his remains could have ended up in the South Fork Eel River where the bone was found, North of Redway…

Might be unlikely, though.

Too far of a stretch, let’s say…

The East Branch of, and, The South Fork Eel River, does run North in the area discussed.

My good friend Tel.
You are a scholar and a gentlemen. I’d like to think you faked your death and are soaking your old bones in the Caribbean. “Another shitty day in paradise” Cheers ehh.

Maybe we need a more educated coroner if he’s not capable of identifying a bone from a human… the anthropologist doesn’t seem very qualified either lol

At least go back to school. How coroner could miss a human bone is beyond me.

The coroner is not the medical examiner, most of the people working in the coroner’s office are just technicians.

A forensic anthropologist is a professional and would not make a “it definitely is/is not human” pronouncement without *closely* examining the bone, taking extremely precise measurements, and looking for signs that may help determine more about the person it belonged to. Despite the actors on CSI wrapping that up in 30 minutes, it can take weeks or months to make that determination.

All the comments about the human bone make me sick. People, please show some love and kindness. The bone belongs to some lost soul and deserves respect. I pray law enforcement will find out who it belongs to and bring some closure to a family whose loved one has been missing for God knows how long. Thank you to the young man for not touching the area, going home and calling law enforcement. I pray through testing the bone will reveal who it belongs to. A family’s lost loved one will come home at last and bring closure for them. May the lost soul RIP.

I have a human bone here! Its my own — I grew the thing! I had my hip joint replaced after it was worn out and kept the old femur head. Its in a jar of formalin & quite revolting in appearance. Still has some meat on it.

“Distinguishing between human and animal bones whilst still on site is important for many reasons, not least of them legal (burial licences etc.). Whilst identifying complete bones seems relatively simple, fragmentary remains can be surprisingly difficult. The following differences can help you make the correct identification:”
