County of Humboldt Partners with TPMA on Target Industry Analysis for Project Rebound

Press release from the County of Humboldt:TPMA

The County of Humboldt’s Economic Development Division will partner with consulting firm TPMA, to conduct economic studies and analyses to support the county’s economic development effort known as Project Rebound.

“We are thrilled to continue our work on Project Rebound in partnership with TPMA, ” said Scott Adair, Economic Development Director for the County of Humboldt. “Together, we intend to build upon our current plans and strategies to support emerging and vital target industries across the region, while maintaining our residents’ high quality of life.”

Project Rebound focuses on the creation of new or updated economic development strategies that emphasize economic recovery, self-sufficiency and equity. In order to develop more equitable and effective long-term economic strategies and plans for the community, economic analyses and studies must be conducted. TPMA will work with county leadership to perform these studies and engage with key partners, interested parties and the public. Through this engagement, new strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in Humboldt County’s target economic industries will be identified and actionable recommendations will be formulated to promote growth and economic prosperity in Humboldt.

“We are excited to work with Humboldt County and regional partners to analyze key industry sectors and help their leadership team formulate actionable strategies to ensure these industries are well positioned to grow, expand and create family-sustaining jobs for the residents of this unbelievable region,” said Brett Wiler, Senior Director of Economic Development and Project Lead for TPMA.

Results of this research will inform the county’s economic development plans, including the Regional and Local Workforce Development Plan and Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS).Business leaders and community members with interest in participating in this process are encouraged to email [email protected]. About Project Rebound
Project Rebound is intended to position Humboldt County’s economy to thrive in a post-COVID environment. Thanks to successful advocacy efforts from Senator Alex Padilla and Congressman Jared Huffman, Project Rebound was awarded $218,000 in Community Project Funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2022. These funds will partly be used to support the completion of a series of industry-specific studies and analyses to aid community-wide long-term economic planning efforts, including the Local and Regional Workforce Development Plan and CEDS. A CEDS is a plan that helps guide local economic development efforts and serves as a requirement for the county to be eligible for certain federal grants.

Pretty disappointing that yet another out-of-area consultant (TPMA, Indiana) is receiving funding to pursue a study on economic development. The funds should really stay local to Humboldt County and focused on critical infrastructure that is useful to our community- such as the EDC website, gohumco.com, which looks like it hasn’t been updated since 2021.

Stop outsourcing to consultants, County of Humboldt, and focus on the mission of “supports livelihoods and prosperity for all persons and communities in Humboldt County by administering programs and initiatives relevant to the County of Humboldt’s Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS)”

The consultant will come to conclusions already known. The only positive outcome will be the money in consultants pocket. Do they guarantee redults….of course not.

Post Covid? Easy; bring back all the small businesses that went POOF! Quit worrying about replacing every single curb in the city and focus on the people that might actually use them. Make business loans easier to get and drop the interest rate to a hair above zero so they don’t go out of business trying to pay off a loan. Take the old flea market and make it a new type of market for everybody. The rest of what they said is just more vague word salad. There. 2 minutes of work and just saved them $200k. I’ll send a bill for the rest.

All you need is to teach people how to grow their own food and how to shoot straight. The rest is useless information that does not help for survival in the near future.

Given the current situation and timing following an assassins attempt, the shoot straight comment is inappropriate. If you don’t believe that, ask Jack Black.

The only sure thing will be endless meetings and studies. The Socialist Government Complex will make commoners tax $$$ disappear to pay for it. Results?

City funds for “consulting” ought to have a minimum local investment, like a lounge might have a two-drink minimum. Consult all you want, but 30% of that money stays in the community. Put it towards revamping a kids playground or one of the local non profits or buy something from every food truck at Friday market. Want to help our local economy? Then put some of that money back into it now, not 8 years from now or whenever these plans actually see the light of day.

Should have called it the Socialist/Government/Industrial Complex. Shining example in Ca (one of many). $Billions$ spent to build a “Train to Nowhere”. Money disappears – $70 Billion dollar deficit. Answer (always): raise taxes to finish the job. Repeat.

This is done every several years. The conclusions are the same. There are no funds or vision for implementation and it is shelved. Then the process is repeated. And could be done in house with a staff member in a day by collating and updating the old reports with offshore wind added.

Another boondoggle decision to spend more money on a study to an out of our area agency rather just get down to the work to benefit locals now cerses 10 years down the line. Humboldt County alway knows it ills, strengths and weaknesses where we could start to rebuild whatever economy we might salvage.

Shame on the ‘Econmic Development committee’ for spending foolish money on yet another time consuming study and analysis rather then do the hard work internally get get something tangible going that actually helps the people and communites of Humboldt County.

The monies we send out of Humboldt County for things we could do ourselves is staggering. We need to start bucking the system and take care of ourselves first!

Another boon doogle decisioon by a Humboldt COunty agency to spend out local dollars on a compny based in Indiana to tell us abut the ills, weaknesses and strengths we already know about rather than than get sown to the work themselves and do what they are auppose to be doing – building up the economy of Humboldt rather than deplete its coffers more.

Shame on the ‘Economic Develpment’ committee for not doing their jobs and getting down to the business of suppirting and building up the locals and communities of Humbolst County verses wasting monies on a study and analysis to tell us what we already know.

All it is… ‘Taxpayer money headed to private company’… minus a few er… ‘drops’ in local agencies.

Grant funds to gain grant funds.

Go figure.

Humboldt County sure loves outsourcing work to out of the area consultants, which is hardly a path to economic development. Is it because they can’t manage to retain competent staff, often actively chasing them out?

Invest in our community. Hire local.
