CA Lawmaker Safety Gets New Attention After Trump Shooting

Former President Donald Trump evaded serious injury, or death, by mere centimeters after a bullet struck his upper right ear during a campaign rally Saturday in Pennsylvania. The Republican presidential candidate pumped his fist, his face bloodied, as Secret Service agents hustled him off the stage following the shooting. But one spectator was killed, two were critically injured and the Secret Service killed the suspected shooter, identified by the FBI as a 20-year-old Pennsylvania man.

Saturday’s mayhem is the most recent known assassination attempt of a president or presidential candidate since the 1981 shooting of President Ronald Reagan, and renewed conversations about the country’s deep partisan divide, gun safety and dangerous political rhetoric — especially violent threats toward officials and candidates.

So it’s no wonder that beefing up personal security has been a priority for some lawmakers. As explained earlier by CalMatters Capitol reporter Sameea Kamal, the Secretary of the Senate and chief administrative officer of the Assembly said that there has been heightened concern about political violence in recent years, and a bill is underway to protect California lawmakers and candidates from rampant threats.

The measure, Assembly Bill 2041, would allow candidates and elected officials to use more campaign funds for personal security for themselves, family members and staff. Democratic Assemblymember Mia Bonta of Oakland is carrying the bill and said she hopes to “see it across the finish line for the safety of candidates across the state.” If passed, Bonta’s measure could be enacted in time for the November election.

  • Bonta, in a statement: “(Saturday’s) events show that political violence continues to plague our democracy. … This bill has had bipartisan support because people on both sides of the aisle recognize the safety needs in this charged political climate.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom, whose office did not immediately reply to a request for comment, vetoed similar legislation last year, saying that the bill did not clearly define “security expenses.” Bonta’s newest bill, however, has been amended to specify what’s considered a security expense, as well as clarifies disclosure requirements for transparency.

The bill sailed through the Assembly this year and is expected to be up for a floor vote in the Senate shortly after the Legislature returns from summer recess in August, according to Bonta’s office. It has received no vote in opposition so far, though three Republican senators voted against last year’s bill. During a March hearing in the Assembly’s elections committee, Republican Assemblymember Tom Lackey of Palmdale raised concerns about the “broad potential interpretation of security expenses.”

California is no stranger to shootings tied to the Oval Office. In 1975, a member of the Manson family cult attempted to shoot President Gerald Ford near the state Capitol in Sacramento while Ford was en route to meet then-Gov. Jerry Brown. And in 1968, U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy died shortly after being shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles while running for the Democratic presidential nomination.

And on Sunday, Newsom said he has deployed 61 Highway Patrol and police officers to assist local, state and federal law enforcement during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, which kicks off today. “Public safety transcends party lines,” said Newsom in a statement. The plan to send these officers has been in the works since May.

It is interesting that Federal Cops might be assigned by the week to fill in at Prisons, or go help the Border Patrol, and we are already short of CHP officers, so it seems to me that we are risking the safety of average citizens to protect the Border, State Prisoners and now, attendees of the RNC…

Judging by the quality of average employees in this country, nobody wants to work or has any pride in their role, and, nobody wants to be a cop any more or wants to serve the people of their country at all…

We used to imagine that doing work was healthy, and that protecting the country and its people, were worthy tasks, but now nobody cares about pride, dignity or respect, and all we want is the maximum compensation…

I’m probably no different, but 41 years of service to pregnant women and farm workers, Native Americans and general medical patients taught me that work is respectable, while maintaining a place in society…

I wouldn’t be a soldier or a cop, but I salute anyone willing to risk their life in order to serve the interest of the public.

As for Politicians, however, you are taking a chance every day that somebody with a streak of crazy might act against you, so be cognizant…

As for Trump, it has surprised me that this hasn’t happened before, and but for a slight movement at the exact moment, apparently, he would have been dead…

We need to treat each other with respect and dignity, and try to get through our days without killing each other, but living in the city is dangerous, and dealing with the public always carries a risk…

The secret service should be disbanded. If you’re afraid don’t run for office. Our “leaders” are mostly cowards. If you can’t stand the heat….these clowns are happy to send others to their deaths in the name of “national security” while hiding behind the protection of others…..if you want to end war and violence make it the law that the first shock troops in any conflict are the state and federal legislators the president and cabinet. There will be no more war. Cowards.

The Secret Service and FBI neutralized that 20-year old within seconds of spotting him. If you think they are cowards, you are brain dead.

They have actually synced up videos from multiple sources using trump’s speech audio to master-time them all together and determine how long everything took. From the time the shooter was spotted bear crawling his way along the roof by spectators, who immediately began to call out to authorities, until he was shot dead, nearly 2 full minutes passed.

Trump should have been removed from the stage at the first suspicion of things not being right. It’s either GROSS incompetence, or treasonous complicity.

Everyone in the California government is trying to take our firearms from us, but they want us to pay for their private security ? I think NOT. Let them wait 45 minutes for the cops to show up when something goes down like they want us to do.

So Governor Newsom is sending 61 CHP officers to the Republican National Convention? Does this mean the budget deficit has been solved and we have extra money? And the CHO personnel shortage has been fixed so we can ship 5 dozen officers out of state?

Great! They have turned this into being about them again. They want to spend more of OUR money because THEY are scared…because something almost happened over in Pennsylvania. Meanwhile WE must live in communities that are increasingly dangerous and violent because of THEIR lackluster attention. Sounds about right for these career politicians who are more like parasites every day….

I agree. They do not need more laws to protect them. They need to become more concerned wit their hateful rhetoic and their unbelievable alcohol and drug abuse. I say tis in the direction of our mostly left leaning state reps. Calling a leading candidate and former president Nazi, Threat to democracy and dictator, when no such things occured in his last presidency is despicable. The heat they raised is on them. They have to live with it now. It surely should not cost us any more money

Hateful rhetoric and lies by the left along with our biased and corrupt lame stream media instigated the shooting.

Sort of like the reaction to 1/6 riots- the public can live with rioting, looting, crime and shootings but just let the violence cross the gated community even if not one of them was hurt and the demands for DOING SOMETHING actually gets action.
The article mentions ” concerns about the “broad potential interpretation of security expenses.”” from one Republican back in March but not now. Reading the bill itself (something the public should do but never seems to- the link is in the article) this is not just candidates who can get home security systems but also their relatives and staff. And, if the entitled person has a relative in the security business, it’s okay to pay them for it too.

That’s exactly why America must elect Donald Trump in November. Laws will be enforced. Criminals jailed. Border secured. It a challenge and will take some time, but order will be restored, and streets cleaned up by a POTUS that actually cares about America.

This is the kind of delusional thinking exhibited by Trump supporters everywhere…

Trump blew his chances to change anything, but at least he caused inflation, 6 trillion dollars in Federal giveaways to his buddies, and completely mishandled COVID…

On the other hand, the DOW is over 40,000, the rich are richer than ever, and millions are wondering WTF happened…

Smoke some more dope, kids, and hope to heck this man is not elected again, even though a geriatric clown with severe dementia is your only other choice…

Trump is delusional, a professional level grifter, mobbed up, he is roundly hated, and he has been convicted of 34 Felonies, and that is only the beginning of his crimes against this country…

Rich people get their friends elected an form the basis of business as usual, but they make us their slaves, and Trump wants to be America’s Hitler, and dreams of taking over the world…

Another Trump Presidency is survivable, but his election was the lowest point of American History since Nixon and subsequently Reagan…

Good lord… In a term mostly taken up with Congress’s repeated impeachment hearings, lawsuits over funding the border wall and Covid, he still managed a tax code change, some of a border wall built, got Europeans to fund more of their share of NATO, got law passed on financial disclosure , made the Pentagon do audits, made cell phone providers up the ability of users to ID spam (they didn’t improve out of the goodness of their hearts.)

Kym, I don’t expect heaven on earth. But lower fuel costs, lower food costs, lower costs for small business, lower energy costs and less illigal immigration are just a few of the realities that can make real peoples day to day lives a little easier. A government who wants to be involved in my every decision and action is just too much. I hope we can agree on this. I respect you and what you do.

“Why is this time going to be different?”

“This time”…???

Sounds like you figure Trump is going to win/you figure Biden is going to lose…

Safely assuming it’s not optimism, why the sudden pessimism…???

What happened…???

(It’s not like it has been a Utopia/Nirvana/ Valhalla, “under” Biden, to be sure…)

Expecting Trump to have freed the world of sin, death, and destruction, in just one term is a bit unrealistic, isn’t it…???

How is Biden doing, so far, along those lines, in your opinion…???

Is he meeting those same expectations…???

Why the double standard…???

No such expectation from Biden…???

Maybe we should poll some Palestinians…???

Did you “not notice heaven on earth”, more, or, less, in the 4 years that Trump was elected to governance, compared to how you’ve “not noticed heaven on earth”, just the same, in the 52 years that Biden has been elected to governance…???

Gaza, under Biden, damn sure ain’t been “heaven on earth”…

I’d say that the opposite would be true.

Biden has left his indelible US Presidential signature there, for an eternity, no question about that…

That will not be forgotten.

J6 pales woefully by comparison.

Biden has had 13 times as long as Trump to create, or more appropriately, NOT create a “state” of euphoria…

Therefore, it would seem, that making it 14 times as long, by reelecting Biden, is just as unlikely, or even more, or MOST unlikely, to suddenly free the world of sin, as as it would be to re-elect Trump…

If Biden IS reelected…

…as far as Biden’s first term…

……..

“I didn’t notice heaven on earth then”…

[au contraire]

…”Why is this time going to be different?”…

……….

If it ain’t…

Yikes…!!!

I understand ya, Country Joe but I can’t be so partisan when both options are looking so grim. I do hope the best for our country and I’ll do what I can in my personal life to “hold the line” against fascists from either direction…

Lawmakers feel so important that they will take your God given rights to protect your family and yourself, and increase their protection. This is the most ass backwards way of thinking, oh yeah wait it’s Commiefornia and it’s DEI voters.
