MCSO Releases Details on Case of 70-Year-Old Man Found Deceased Near Van Damme State Park

Press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office:

Coroners CaseOn 06-30-2024 at around 2:14 PM, California State Park Rangers were dispatched to a missing person, who was last seen near the Pacific Ocean at Van Damme State Park in Little River, CA.  State Park Rangers arrived and contacted family members of 70-year-old Robert William Frost and learned that Frost was last seen on the beach, near the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

State Park Rangers began to search the immediate area for Frost, and he was not initially located.  Mendocino Volunteer Fire Department personnel arrived to assist State Park Rangers, searching the ocean with their Jet-Skis.  At approximately 3:35 PM, Frost was located under the surface of the water near the “outer reef,” which is around 3,000 feet southwest of the beach.  Robert was quickly transported to Big River Beach, where the time of death was declared by a Deputy Sheriff-Coroner at 3:48 PM.

Frost’s family members and legal next-of-kin were contacted and notified of his death. There was nothing suspicious noted during this coroner’s investigation that would be indicative of foul-play.

Thank you for your kind words. Robert was my dad. He loved nothing more than the ocean…and his daughters. He was an incredible man. He is incredibly missed.

HI Melia, I was writing a piece about him for the Mendocino Voice. I was hoping to get a picture and maybe a nice comment like you put above. I was told he used to surf a lot in Hawaii and was famous for landscaping work. Frank [email protected] 707-964-6174

It’s great hiking but there was damage this winter to the trails. All that rain!

I am very sorry to read that Mr. Frost lost his life in the ocean. An ending I prayed would not happen. Condolences to his family members and friends. RIP Robert. Know that you are deeply loved and missed by many. Thank you to the State Park Rangers and the Mendocino Volunteer Fire Department who looked so hard for Robert only to find him deceased. You tried your very best.
