Veterans Call for Swift Action on Long-Delayed Veterans Hall Rebuild

Local veterans are urging the county to expedite the construction of the Garberville Veterans Hall, eight years after the original hall was closed due to hazardous black mold. Doug Battles, a representative of the local VFW chapter 6354, provided an update on the situation and called for community support at the upcoming county supervisors’ meeting.
The John Haynes Memorial Veterans Hall was shut down in 2016 following an inspection that revealed black mold in the judges’ quarters. Since then, efforts to rebuild the hall have been met with delays and rising costs.
“After two years of pushing, the county finally allocated $3.1 million for the new hall,” Battles explained. “But in the two years since that allocation, the cost has doubled to $6.6 million.”
The issue is set to be addressed at the county supervisors’ meeting on June 25. Veterans are calling for a decisive decision to move forward with the project, which has seen little progress beyond the demolition of the old hall. Battles emphasized the importance of community involvement, urging residents to attend the meeting or participate via Zoom. (Details below.)
Battles said the county is wanting to alter the original plans to reduce the additonal costs needed due to inflation. The original, more comprehensive design is expected to cost an additional $3.5 million, where the scaled-down version is estimated to cost the county $2.7 million. Battles and his fellow veterans strongly support the original plan, which includes better facilities and the potential for solar panel installation. The scaled down version would also reduce the building capacity by over 25%.
The Southern Humboldt veteran community believes the additional investment will serve the community for the next 50 to 60 years, while also honoring the county’s obligation to rectify the neglect that led to the previous building’s deterioration.
Battles said the prolonged closure of the hall has left a significant void in the local veterans’ community. New veterans, particularly those returning from recent conflicts, have had no central point of contact for support and camaraderie. Before the hall’s closure, the Veteran Center in Eureka regularly sent counselors to meet with veterans in the community, providing crucial services even in makeshift conditions.
“The lack of a dedicated space has left many veterans isolated,” Battles said. “It’s not just about having a place to celebrate events like George Mullins’ 100th birthday; it’s about providing a supportive environment where veterans can get the help they need.”
Battles also highlighted the troubling issue of veteran suicides, noting the absence of a supportive community space might be contributing to the problem. He urged the county to recognize the broader impact of the hall’s closure on veterans’ well-being and to act promptly.
The community’s involvement is crucial in pressuring the county to commit to the project’s completion. “We need a decisive action by the county,” Battles stressed. “They can’t keep kicking this down the road. The veterans need this hall, and they need it now.”

And it only took 8 years!
It is a disgrace, but then, the building they had previously was not exactly a symbol of respect and dignity towards Veterans…
Now they will bring in a Double-Wide worth $200,000, and bill out 3 million!
Humboldt – Nepotism, Incompetence and Greed… The Holy Trinity of Corruption…
The old hall was great and if the county had not failed in it’s legal obligation to maintain it, it would still be serving the community today
Don’t look now, but “The County” is failing to fulfill it’s obligations 24/7/365…
Nearly as corrupt as Perestroika back in the day…
Humboldt County is a Fiduciary, and they are Legally Obligated to look after the interests of the citizens!
If they don’t, there is great exposure!
Smash the government, it’s your right!
Next, everyone will be stealing everything…

The mold that caused the BS closure was a direct result of deferred maintenance and negligence by Humboldt County and our pandering and feckless supervisors over the years.
They need no pander or feck, as they are merely crooks, right out in the face of the public, while nobody ever does anything but re-elect the worst element of the community!
If you are wondering how crooked the system is, why has no mold ever been detected in the festering decay of that decrepit old hospital?
“Hmmmm”, yes, no mold here”…!
“why has no mold ever been detected in the festering decay of that decrepit old hospital?”
Very different roof designs…
The hospital has a pitched roof, it had redwood shakes at one time, as I recall, but it has comp roofing now…
The Vets hall had a flat, hot mop roof, a very bad design for Humboldt County, prone to leakage, especially for Southern Humboldt, and extra especially with deferred maintenance…
I couldn’t agree more.
The Eureka vets hall got rebuilt at a cost of millions, with a new stage, lights, sound system, and bar…and they won’t let any bands play there. Last Sat night a touring band from Denmark was supposed to play there with several.local bands but the hall pulled out at the last minute after heavy advertising, leaving the bands to scamble to find a venue. Humbrews in Arcata came thru and the show went on…
Why are any bands playing at a vets hall, what is it a casino?.
Green Day played at the G’ville vets hall, is that correct?
It’s like having the enemy play in your kitchen.
Bully joe from Green Days gay mascara caused the black mold.
He’s not exactly pro American or pro veteran, not that I am either.
Isolationism now!
The county’s behavior on this issue has been nothing short of shameful. From the neglect that led to the decay of the original building, to the endless delays, to the current effort to “downsize” they insult the veterans who have given much to their community and to the nation.
Dig deeper BOS, make Garberville great again.
The County will say they don’t have the money but decades of neglect and 8 years of foot dragging got us where we are now.
It’s way past time to build the vets hall and honor and respect those who answered the call.
It’s high time that the Veterans building in Garberville begin construction. Redwood drive needs to be completely repaved.
It’s shameful how the county has let their obligations slide while they attack our neighbors with ridiculous fines and abatements.
The original estimated cost wouldn’t have raised from Bidenflation if they would have gotten off their duffs and got busy.
Git ‘er done.
NOW! No more bullshit excuses. I say the citizens need to pass a measure taking the BOS supervisors pay until this project is completed. That roughly $500,000 per year will make up some of the difference.
And where is 2nd District Supervisor Bushnell. Its time to [edit] hold her accountable for her non-action. She has time to promote a new “Garberville Complete Streets Infrastructure Project”, but no time to promote a new Veterans Hall. But I/m sure she would be glad to give you every excuse under the sun why the County has not started and finished building the new Vets Hall and none of it is her fault…

Bushnell is a joke, and not the funny kind…
It is amazing how many folks find a paying job, where they don’t really do anything!
Happened to me, a few times…
Yep.
Should have seen this coming. Bushnell needs to step up and secure funding for the original plan (which was already underwhelming).
She hasn’t and won’t.
County is broke. Already spent the money on something else.
I just sent an email to the supervisors. It was easy, and I hope it helps. Delaying this or cheapening what has been promised (yet again) is ridiculous and insulting. Please email, or call or zoom in tomorrow.
Did anyone else watch the BOS meeting about the Garberville Vets Hall? What exactly did they approve 4 to 1 and how is it any different than what has already been approved years ago?

Even the clowns over at Angie’s Outhouse couldn’t be bothered to report on the proceedings of the veterans hall in Garberville.
More concerned about what transpired with the “reality” tv show that Honsal wants to do. Guess some things are much more important to our local news sources than the plight of veterans.
How did the meeting go? I was unable to attend.
Some follow-up to what the BOS decided would be nice, but I guess we won’t get anything until the county actually does a press release.
