People and Places: Deadman’s Drop at this Year’s Kinetic Sculpture Race
This series is dedicated to interviewing interesting people and exploring intriguing places, promising viewers an intimate look at the diversity and beauty of our area through the eyes of those who call it home.
Welcome to “People & Places,” a video column where local resident Henk Conn takes us on a journey through the heart of the California North Coast. Henk shows us a little of what makes each location and its inhabitants worth getting to know.
In this episode of People and Places, Henk Conn takes you to the 2024 Kinetic Sculpture Race at Deadman’s Drop near Manila. Get ready for a wild ride as fearless (and slightly crazy) participants pedal their homemade, human-powered contraptions over gnarly terrain.
This unique event blends art, engineering, and pure human creativity, resulting in some of the wackiest, most ingenious designs you’ve ever seen.
Hold onto your hats—it’s going to be a bumpy (and utterly entertaining) ride!

This is still a thing?
Every year. You should check it out. At least one day of it.
Best video I’ve seen so far… For The Glory!
So much laughter ?
But if an orv did it, it would be illegal destruction of dune habitat.
This is a once a year event that is enjoyed by thousands.
Get over it.
I mean, yeah. a much more powerful vehicle who’s wheels operate at much higher torque and which is a source of exhaust and likely petrochemical contamination is subject to different restrictions than a slow moving human powered vehicle.
Kind of like how you can bike on the waterfront trail but not ride a dirt bike on it.
