Law enforcement, the Hoopa Fire Department, and Hoopa Tribal Police are currently searching along the Trinity River near Hoopa after two juvenile males were reportedly swept away by the river’s strong currents about 3:40 p.m. As of now, one of the youths remains missing, while the other managed a narrow escape after grabbing onto a tree along the riverbank.

At least one female went in originally trying to help the male but ended up having to climb onto a rock. A rescue boat did assist the one male juvenile back to the shore as well as two females on the other side of the river on a rock.

Coast Guard arrived on scene to search about 4:45 p.m.

The flows on the Trinity River are high right now because of releases from Lewiston Dam.

According to Allie Hostler from the Two Rivers Tribune, a civilian boat was launched at Campbell Creek to join the search effort.  She added, “I can visually see a boat parked upstream at Tish Tang.” She also confirmed that a tribal police boat was launched at Roland’s Bar to aid in the search for the missing juvenile.

Two ambulances have gone down to Tish Tang using river access from the Hwy 96 side. And more law enforcement are responding also.

The rescued male is reportedly being transported to the hospital.

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

UPDATE 5:40 p.m.: Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Chief Rolando Ramos told Allie Hostler, editor of the Two Rivers Tribune that the youth involved are “kids from out of the area.” He said that one of girls jumped into a hazardous area and got pulled under. “Two guys that were with her jump on after,” he explained. “The girl and one guy get shot ou down River. We locate them. One is still not located. We have Coast Guard in the air. Tribal and County [Humboldt County Sheriff] in the water.”

UPDATE 7:40 p.m.: A family member of the missing juvenile reportedly jumped into the Trinity River and had to be be rescued. An ambulance was requested Code 3 (with lights and sirens.)

UPDATE 8:10 p.m.: The search is being called off as dark falls. According to Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Chief Rolando Ramos, the missing juvenile hasn’t been located. Searchers will return tomorrow at 7 a.m.

I think a lot of publicity/public education and signage (banners) in this area about the danger of the Trinity would be part of the solution to saving these pour souls…doing nothing will result in the same consequences every year.

There are signs and banners in the area. The one in this particular area visible before you even get to the river bar

PLEASE keep your loved ones out of the Trinity river until at least mid June, “SUMMER!” The water will be lover and warmer! Kamoss seeks 3 before summer every year don’t be one of them! It’s a very sad and true tradition!

An ancient klamath/trinity river water serpent! It hibernates through out the summer early fall! There are many deep caverns in the rocks along the rivers!

Ahhh! Thank you. If they are like the Tibetan and Indian Nagas, they do not like the rocks, gold and minerals to be disturbed by man. That really pisses them off.

That story really put the fear in my kids when they were little — even the strong willed one that never listens! it stuck with them (the story) and am thankful for the elder who taught them that story because no other amount of parental warning would have done (thank you Jack!)

Damn, it’s waaaaay too early to be swimming in the Trinity. I hope these kids are OK.

We are at least 6 weeks away from safe swimming in the Trinity

We’ve been telling people that for years, especially to out of area folks: no swimming until June or the water gets below X level on the river bar. Lots of snags and submerged junk to get hung up on.

My daughter n friend went to Kimtu Saturday to get some vitamin D…they listened to & finally went over to some naive Cal Poly kids that were talking about swimming across the river…one genius was pushing it to the others…and after some reinforcement from my daughter the other 2 backed out of the peer pressure – luckily the local 2 gals talked the college kids into going home (LA) to their parents an friends in a few weeks when Cal Poly shuts down…every year folks…don’t go past your knees!

Thanks to the people with “civilian” boat for helping the Tribal police. Hoping they will find the missing safe down river.

ALL THE RIVERS ARE DANGEROUS NOW. It’s not just kids. The spirits of many adults are in the Six Rivers.

Oh, it’s only April! I wouldn’t go into any of our rivers until late June at the earliest. Preferably later. Oh dear, this doesn’t look good. Poor people.

Oh no! They jumped in to help a girl? These are exactly the kind of brave kids we need to grow up into brave men! Hoping for the best outcome…We need signs at these popular spots to tell the danger. I’m no fan of signs but these might help…

The girl jumped in to help the boy. Maybe we just need brave people in general.

If you read the 5:40om update it clearly states that two young men jumped in to help a girl, one man and one girl were shot out but one man is still missing.

The girl jumped in to save the boy. She got out by herself. Careful reading is a useful skill

The article says both those things. In the body of the article it says what you say it says and in an update it says what the other person said. Careful reading is indeed a useful skill.

The Trinity river is way too cold for swimming!
It’s always the young and usually trying to save a dog.

Whose jurisdiction is this? I would be willing to push for road signs warning of the danger. I need to know who to contact.

Steve Madrone is the County Supervisor of that area of the Trinity River. The Hoopa Tribe would have jurisdiction along the reservation where the river runs.

F is right Ullr Rover! Was at Kimtu beach today and saw so many people getting in the river…not locals who mostly know not to hop in the Trinity right now…but folks really need to see that the Trinity is muddy, and fast right now and learn that now is not a good time to go in. Be safe folks.

While this was happening the CHP helicopter was wasting fuel circling over Humboldt Cal Poly, why was this resource wasted at Cal Poly instead of searching for missing teen?
I want answers!;

They, HCSO, may have been preoccupied with people from out of the area (your name implies you are in Mendo), like you, “driving up” to occupy the campus and shut down government buildings.

He is a young man. My nephew. Brave and strong. Please come home safe. No one ever deserves this. Not stupid like someone posted. It could happen to anyone. Please pray for him and the family.

My Ecology professor at UO used to talk about the “look see ain’t Nature grand!” folks. People raised in cities often underestimate the back country where death is always tugging at your elbow. So sorry for the one lost but it could have been worse.

Do you people not hear the family asking for prayer for this young man and the family? Please hold off on your criticism and judgement and try to give what is called for here. We need to be showing what a good community this is.

Some helpful advice

If you find yourself in this.sitiation do NOT fight the current. Let the current carry you downstream and swim across the current to the nearest bank as it carries.you down.

I was told by a local native, that every year the trinity River takes 3 lives before it’s safe to swim in.
