Press release from Caltrans:

Caltrans invites you to participate in a virtual meeting on March 12 to discuss the proposed replacements of the Eureka Slough Bridges along U.S. 101 in northern Eureka.
The project aims to replace the northbound and southbound Eureka Slough Bridges located near Target. These replacements are intended to address seismic deficiencies and improve the function and geometrics of both bridges. The project involves replacing the existing bridges with two new, mirrored structures. Each bridge will feature two traffic lanes, standard inside and outside shoulders, and a separated bicycle and pedestrian path on the outside edge.
The project is currently in the environmental phase and construction is targeted to commence in 2029.
For more information about the project, visit tinyurl.com/eurekaslough.

Every time that I cross the old slough bridge I worry about the geometrics, I’m glad that CalTrans wants to talk about it.

Why a pedestrian and bike lanes, they are building a multimillion dollar trail right next to it already.

Odd… Those bridges have survived 7.0 earthquakes. Yup. No damage.
Newer bridge over Humboldt Bay nearly came down. Came within about 6″ of collapsing.
Massive retrofit.

If CalTrans needs to spend money… why not design a 4′ walking/bike lane to hang off each side of the Samoa bridge. That would be a far greater benefit for our citizens.

Lots of bum… er… ‘Biden newcomer’ traffic on it.
Maybe I’ll use the CalTran ‘equity’ planner to try that ?

Go figure.

A 7.0 is one thing, an 8.0 is a whole nother thing.

Heck… run it up to maybe 10 or so.
At any rate after a Subduction Zone earthquake the highway will probably be submerged anyway. Last time the ground along the bay dropped by about 3′ to 4′.
They might be really nice bridges to a mudflat.

What Cal Trans needs to look at is improving the 4 lanes into 2 malfunction junction at 5th and V streets.

Yup.
The hideous merge lane/bridge at the McKinleyville feed to 101 south.
Bad merge lane from Arcata Sunset to 101 south.
Bad merge lane from Hwy 299 to 101 south.
All are accident/white knuckle provokers.

Just take it out, don’t replace it. Eureka needs to go back to its natural state. Crack me up.

I don’t think mirrored bridges will reflect enough sunlight to decrease global warming, and I worry that they might result in increased traffic accidents! ?

Oh yeah- gotta raise them up for that sea level rise! What- CalTrans didn’t even mention that part?

Those two bridges need to go, and new wider and safer ones put in their place. I don’t ride a bike or walk on the bridges, but it would be nice to have a concrete barrier between the car lanes and the outside wall of the bridges.
