Northwestern California continues to deal with a storm that is impacting road conditions. The National Weather Service in Eureka has predicted snowfall today across the Humboldt Interior, with accumulations of up to 8 inches expected on high passes above 1,000 feet through Monday morning. Even lower elevations, down to 500 feet, could have snow showers. The Winter Storm Watch issued by the National Weather Service warns, “Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Tire chains may be necessary if travelling through mountain passes.”

For those who have to travel, be careful. Yesterday, there were multiple accidents especially in areas where hail fell.

Before You Go

  • Check the Forecast and Plan Your Route: Always be aware of the weather conditions before you start your journey. Use local news or weather apps to check for road closures and plan your route accordingly.
  • Prepare Your Vehicle: Ensure your car is ready for the trip. This includes checking your lights, brakes, tires, windshield wipers, and fluid levels. It’s also wise to have an emergency kit in your vehicle.

Driving in Rain

  • Drive Slowly and Increase Your Following Distance: Wet roads reduce your vehicle’s grip, making it harder to stop and control. Slow down and maintain a greater distance from the vehicle in front of you to allow more time for stopping.
  • Use Headlights: Visibility is usually compromised in rainy conditions. Turning on your headlights can help you see and be seen by others.

Driving in Snow and Ice

  • Drive Extremely Cautiously: Icy conditions can lead to “black ice,” which is nearly invisible and extremely slippery. If you must drive on ice, do so very carefully and avoid unnecessary travel.
  • Keep Windows Clear: Use your defroster and wipers to maintain visibility, and remove any ice or snow before you start driving.

General Tips for All Bad Weather Conditions

  • Focus and Avoid Distractions: Concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Avoid using your phone or other distractions.
  • Emergency Kit: Always have an emergency kit that includes essentials such as water, snacks, a first-aid kit, and blankets.

Remember, the best strategy in bad weather is to avoid driving if you can. If that’s not possible, these tips can help you navigate the challenges safely. For more detailed guidance and tips, consider checking the sources directly, such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Drive Safely, and State Farm.

From about 10:15 am 3/3 BRICELAND-THORN ROAD: Trees are down across all lanes near China Creek, west of Beginnings.

And from about 9:15 am 3/3 The roads have been plowed , but the snow/ hail is falling very heavy right now on chemise mountain road. 4 wheel drive or chains would be ideal if you must go out but staying home would be safest.
