Rio Dell Police Department Receives Grant to Battle Alcohol-Related Harm
Press release from the City of Rio Dell:
The Rio Dell Police Department was selected by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to receive grant funding of $4,500 from the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to battle alcohol-related harm in the community.
The goal of the grant is to reduce the availability of alcohol to minors and reduce alcohol-related crime through multiple enforcement, educational, and prevention programs conducted by local law enforcement officers. Programs funded through the grant include Minor Decoy and Shoulder Tap operations.
These grants strengthen local law enforcement efforts by combining the talents of local police officers and ABC agents. ABC agents have expertise in alcoholic beverage laws and can help communities reduce alcohol-related harm.
“The program can improve the quality of life in neighborhoods,” said ABC Director Joseph McCullough. “We’ve seen a real difference in the communities where the grant program resources have been invested.”
Minor Decoy and Shoulder Tap programs each involve a minor under the supervision of a peace officer, called a minor decoy. The minor decoy goes to an ABC-licensed business and attempts to purchase alcohol from a store clerk or receive it from a patron. If a clerk or patron furnishes alcohol to the minor, they can be cited or arrested and face fines and community service.
This project is part of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control’s Minor Decoy/Shoulder Tap Grant Project, funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

That is a very small grant. Hope it helps.
It’s a small town with a small P.D. Anything helps.
That is a very useful grant. We have a big problem in Rio Dell and other local cities with folks being drunk in public, driving down the streets, not using crosswalk’s, etc. Any money for the Rio Dell Police Department to fight alcohol use is great. I pray it will help save a life or two at least.
