Body Found During Search for Missing Island Mountain Man—Investigation Underway

Death Investigation featureThe search for missing Island Mountain man Scott Graves has turned up a dead body according to officials.

Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Captain Greg Van Patten told us that search and rescue personnel located a body but at this point, it remains unidentified “due to condition of the body.”

Scott Graves

Scott Graves, a 63-year-old resident of the remote community of Island Mountain, had gone missing under mysterious circumstances.

Search efforts involving family, local Volunteer Fire Departments, and the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department are underway.

The last contact with Graves was on December 4, and concerns rose when his brother found Graves’ truck near his cabin locked, windows down, with one of his dogs inside, but Graves was missing. His wallet, ID, hat, and belongings were found in various locations.

Scott’s wife expressed concerns, mentioning that the roads to his property were muddy. A missing person report was filed on Thursday, and search teams, including helicopters, drones, and out-of-area search parties, were deployed to aid in the search.

Captain Van Patten told us “Sheriff’s Detectives are conducting follow-up investigations as part of death investigation.”

If anyone can offer information about the investigation, contact the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office by calling (707)463-4086.

Really? Are you even growing crops anymore? It’s kind of pointless considering it’s not worth anything.

I agree what a stupid ass comment… It doesn’t say anything about this man being involved with anything he was on his own property. It could have been a accident possibly to were he was unable to get back to his cabin to call for help.

I wouldn’t go that far. People are still getting a good dollar for small jars 1/2 filled with weed and it has to be sourced someplace. Just because some people haven kept up w the changes in the market doesn’t mean everyone is folding. I j ow a few people still growing under lights and a bunch more than haven’t completely shut down.
That dude deff sounds like a poser though.

“We defend our crops”.
Anyone who thinks killing or dying over weed is something to glorify is a total asshole who doesn’t belong here. Period.

I’ve been in this game since I was strong enough to haul a bag of chicken shit up a mountain and the old time growers have seen shit I can hardly imagine.

People who make these kinds of comments are the same shitheads who strut around their properties, methed outta their minds, strapped with an AR intimidating the trimmigrants.
But when the cops show up their the first to run.

Speaking the truth thank you!!
Anyone who thinks a comment like that belongs here has no business being here.
Its probably a bot or AI program, am.gonna tell myself that for now.

Id hire a PI to look into that commentor, the LEOs just never seem to be as effecyive as a PI.
Or contact the FBI.

Really hoping its not him.
So sorry for the family, lets all shpw them the reapect they deserve especially when something is this public it can be double overwhelming.
Which makes the commentor in question even more of a jackass.

Blessings to his loved ones, blood family and community family. ?

I have never been a dope grower or a drug dealer, but I have known people who have done those things since the mid 1970’s. So for my whole life I have been hearing what a cool scene the dope business is, and how chill the ‘true’ growers are. Yet my whole life I have been watching people get ripped off (constantly), arrested, and a personally knew someone who was murdered over weed. So there may be cool people in the dope business, but I think they are the exception rather than the rule…

At one point not that long ago, upwards of 30% of the working adults in this community derived some or all of their income from “growing dope”.

I’m guessing whatever cool people you knew in the business simply didn’t let you know they were in the business.

I didn’t/don’t want to now about peoples drug business, because when it goes to crap (and it always does), I don’t want to be involved in any way.

I really don’t know why people feel the need to talk about their illicit activities…

You just busted yourself. You go on a diatribe about all the stuff you observed and know about cannabis culture then say you don’t want to know anything about it and then when people respond to your opinion, you can’t understand why they want to talk about it, even though you goad people into it. Come ON!

Even the nicest people get ripped off. The police arrest you if your business is currently illegal and illegal philanthropists cannot have grip-and-grin publicity photos in the news. No offense, but weed people aren’t going to hang out with you knowing your opinion and proclivities. You did not experience the full range and breadth of the cannabis experience. I am not a golfer, but if I think Tiger Woods is a jerk, does that make all golfers jerks?

Big assumption, he may have had a medical problem like a stroke and wondered off, could have been animal attack, could have been any number of things including an accident of some type.

Your comment is nasty and rude. Growing pot is not reason to kill someone who may have wandered onto your property without knowing where he was. If the body is Scott Graves, I am sending my deepest condolences to his family and friends at this most sad time in their lives. As for you Jgaff, just shut the hell up!

This comment cracks me up. Sounds like a young person trying desperately to come off as tough and most likely is not directly involved in growing. Known growers for decades. Established and experienced folks do not talk like this.

What kind of comment is that? Really weird. Are you his killer? He may have had a medical emergency. Why is everyone assuming foul play? Don’t you think if it was, the body would have been taken off the property? Assuming this body was located near his homestead makes me think something happened to him medically. with all the Wilderness and wildlife it’s no wonder he’s not able to be identified right away.

I’d say it’s a little bit too early to assume with absolute certainty that it was Mr. Graves’ remains, that they found.

It would seem more likely to be so, if they have now completely discontinued their search for him.

Until there is a positive identification, it is still possible, (however remotely), that Mr. Graves could still be alive.

Either way, condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Props to the search teams that promptly found the remains…

Heartbreaking ? Scott is a good friend of mine. I’m at a loss for words. Saw him a couple of weeks ago checking out the surf above camel. My thoughts and prayers go out to Stacy, the kids and family. ?

Agreed. Good guy, good family. I was really hoping this wasn’t going to be the outcome. Condolences to his wife and kids.
I was thinking, it’s that time of year when ‘partner’ bullshit often goes down. The crop is dried/trimmed/ready to be split up among partners, and a lot can go sideways. Ive seen it many times. Might be worth looking at ‘trusted’ partners closely.

It’s messed up the world we live in where someone is found deceased and all people can do is comment on irrelevant bs and talk crap. A person is gone and circumstances are unknown. Have respect for the family. God forbid someone who’s making those comments have to go through the same and then have to read harsh rude comments without knowing the truth.

Who ever it is, Condolences.
It’s a sad state of this world, that people have become so petty they post nasty comments about people they don’t know who are deceased, heaping on hurt to families who are in shock and grieving.

This is sad. Whoever has died, I hope it’s found to be from natural causes.
Scott’s name sounds familiar. I can kinda place his face. Where did he hang out? What things did he get involved with in the community? Seems I met him somewhere…. And if my vague recollection is right, he was a good hearted man.

I didn’t know him particularly well, but I did know him well enough to corroborate your recollection. We recently concluded a project along the edges of Bell Springs Rd. I hadn’t seen him in years, but he made sure multiple times to stop, flash his beaming smile, and chew the fat.

Why does every story, regardless of what it is about, turn into completely irrelevant comments about pot? What is wrong with you people? Now, my question regarding the actual content of the article, it’s only been a week, the weather has been cool, how could his body be unidentifiable in such a short period of time? Animals..? **yuck**
