As a new storm system approaches the California coast, travelers on Hwy 101 in Del Norte County are advised to prepare for potential disruptions at Last Chance Grade. Caltrans District 1 warned this afternoon that while crews “have made great progress in response to a slide in the area that closed the highway over the weekend…[w]ith a storm approaching, periods of heavy rainfall should be expected to require one-way control traffic through the area. Expect delays of up to 15 minutes.”Heavy equipment works Last Chance Grade.

Caltrans says, “Intermittent one-way traffic control should be expected through Thursday.” A slide came in over the roadway this weekend and cause the road to close. Caltrans was able to reopen it within hours. However, they warn the slide is still problematic and the predicted storm could cause further problems

Caltrans crews have made significant progress in clearing slide debris and restoring access. Caltrans says, “They’ve cleared the slide debris, have spotters constantly watching and flaggers on standby to ensure the safety of travelers and workers.”

The coming storm though poses a risk. Travelers are advised to prepare for delays.

And the battle between man and Mother Nature continues.

The hillside that was involved in the slide was quoted as saying,
“I always find gravity disappointing. It always brings me down.”

Down voted for that? Golly, you just can’t get a break. Someone is really coming down on you. This may be your last chance. Perhaps you should do a bit of graveling. Being funny is a slippery slope.

An amazing photograph of the appropriately named Last Chance slide. Those alert equipment operators and ground crews are working in a high risk area.

Yes, it is an amazing photo. I remember a comment years ago that if one saw the highway from the ocean one would never drive it again.

What a joke. Just came by at 11:45 PM Tuesday night and there was nobody spotting anything. I drove very slowly by- maybe they were lying down in that pickup and spotting through one open eye lol? Luckily there was nothing on the road. And lucky for me I read this article before coming through! Imagine somebody has no clue and runs into some debris- oops! There were 2 bright lights set up so I guess we can be our own spotters….Good Luck w that incoming rain! Glad I read the article and decided to just push through from Eugene tonight….Thank You, Kym!!

Yeah that’lll never happen. You’re traversing mountain ranges in the wettest part of the state, with steep inclines and unstable slopes from a myriad of reasons. You’ll need 10 thousand spotters, cameras, drones or even cell phone reception. And that’s the official highways and state routes. Go deeper into the hills and the likelihood you might be stuck in the hills for a few days is almost a guarantee at some point during the winter. Or for well….anything. As posted already, that’s the nature of the beast. Be sure to support our efforts to get the Last Chance Grade be rerouted sooner than later. It’s already been a few decades of waiting.

Have you been over Hwy 299 lately Many spots look just like that.
It’s the nature of the beast. Live in the mountains? Expect mountain slides.

I really don’t remember so many slides/closures at that point in the 1960s or 1970s. Have there been major changes on the hill or the road lately?

Things deteriorate over time. It’s nature. Just cus there hasn’t been doesn’t mean there will never be.

How many more drivers must be killed here before the state does the right thing?
