[UPDATE 8:45 p.m.: Still One-Way Controlled Traffic] Air Ambulance Requested for Roll Over Crash During a Pursuit by Law Enforcement Near the Peg House North of Leggett

At about 2:18 p.m., a vehicle rolled over on Hwy 101 north of Leggett near the Peg House. Soon after, one reader witnessed four CHP vehicles headed at a high speed through Richardson Grove. This was a suspect vehicle being pursued northbound by law enforcement, according to Officer Jonathan Clevenger, spokesperson for the CHP.

Hwy 101 is being closed.

An air ambulance was requested over the scanner. The landing zone requested is at the intersection of Hwy 101 and Hwy 1.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

UPDATE 3:04 p.m.: Officer John Clevenger with the CHP Garberville office told us that at “approximately at 2:18 seen one of our Laytonville officers got into a pursuit with a vehicle going northbound. It was a high speed pursuit which ended up resulting in a crash, [near the Peg House]. We are getting updates as they are coming in. But at this point, we urge all travelers to avoid the area. There will be a closure. Caltrans is on scene. They’re setting up…

Clevenger explained that the closure was “to preserve any evidence” and make sure the scene was safe “for the officers and the medical staff on scene.”  He told us that the closure, “depending on the incident itself, it could be anywhere from four to six hours. Those are just rough estimates. It could be a little longer but at this time, they are actively investigating everything and trying to render aid to anybody that is injured on the scene.”

Caltrans QuickMap says that the road will be closed at 5:01 p.m.

UPDATE 3:44 p.m.: FlightRadar and the scanner provided information that a CHP helicopter took the patient from the crash scene and is now currently en route to an out of the area hospital.

UPDATE 4:03 p.m.: CHP Garberville posted on Facebook, “Emergency personnel are on scene working on opening one way traffic control within the hour.”

UPDATE 4:09 p.m.: Caroline Titus, former editor of the Ferndale Enterprised, posted this from the scene:

UPDATE 5 p.m.: CHP Garberville posted that “one way traffic control is in effect.” Caltrans QuickMap still shows a large backup in both directions.

UPDATE 6 p.m.: Below is a photo from a passerby of the crushed car.

UPDATE 8:28 p.m.: Carolyn Titus posted this video on X of the crash scene:

UPDATE 8:45 p.m.:

As of 8:30 p.m., there is still one-way controlled traffic.

That is where Hwy1 and Hwy101 join.

When we passed the vehicle, as in the photograph, it was lodged against a rising slope and across the road was a steep drop-off into the river. Heavily forested. Very little turn-out space. It was not really at the Hwy1 and US 101 junction. Maybe that’s where the chopper landed.

The suspect that was running from the CHP was apparently driving faster than his ability to do so ending in a crash. Not a bright idea to try an out run law enforcement. I hope his stupid mistake will not claim his life. He could have easily killed someone coming the other way.

I heard it! Here at the Peg House….1st the vroooom of a vehicle zooming by, going North, then the 1st siren close behind, then another and another, all a couple mins behind the others. Then the helicopter, going round & round and now traffic is stopped. Appears to be opening up, letting a few cars through at the moment. Come on in and have a burger while you wait! ?

I would not consider him an outlaw for running from the CHP on that occasion. It really does not matter now because he perished in that accident. Someone lost a family member and that is just tragic.

Are high-speed pursuits ever worth the risk to the public?

A mercedes running north at harvest time…not a local or would have outrun them and ditched down a side road- or not run at all. I’m saying it- There’s probably a bunch of cash in that car. And maybe that’s why CHP would not call off the dangerous chase?…$$$ Baby!

My deepest condolences to the friends and family of the involved party.

With all due respect, I sincerely hope a lesson was learned. Whatever crime they were running from was not worth the consequence of running from persecution. It’s sad that a life was lost, but luckily it was only one. As a local who drives that section of the road multiple times a day, with my children, I can only say that the decisions made here were not smart. He could have killed anyone on the highway yesterday. That chase happened right as school was getting out. There were numerous parents and kids on the road. It’s hard to show empathy towards someone with such little concern about the safety of those around them.

I’m told that firearms and ammunition were found in the vehicle which makes it seem suspects were probably coming to home invade and/or rip off growers.. it is the session…
Suspect lost their life and their passenger is probably not going to make it as well…
Two lives lost over dumb choices and many more could have been lost as well…

We were returning north from Ukiah when we got stopped for two hours while police and other first responders processed the crash site. Seems like a very long time for a one-vehicle crash, whatever the injuries or deaths. Eventually drove by the vehicle and it appeared to be literally hammered almost flat from the side not shown.

Condolences to the grieving family and friends. News organizations report the news and people respond to reality. This tragedy cannot be swept away because nothing changes if nobody knows. If this driver had hit an oncoming vehicle, the tragedy would have been even worse.

We will await the police report which I assume will be a public document.

We also were there stopped during the road closure and spoke with people who evidently witnessed part of the chase, including the CalTrans employee on the road cleanup crew working south of the Peg House.

Two people said the chase started southbound and then reversed its direction northbound somewhere down near the rest stop (?) right as they were driving by northbound.

The CalTrans employee at the road cleanup area near the slide said it was a miracle that the southbound traffic had just cleared the one-lane controlled area when the chased vehicle came through or there would have been a massive head on collision. He also mentioned the chased vehicle nearly hit him in the roadway as he stood near his cones.

Tiffany
thank you for handling your responses to everyone so graciously
it doesn’t really matter what anyone thinks or says, or what their perception of anything is
Honestly, Manny has always had a special place in my heart since he was a baby.
We just lost his Daddy a little over a year ago, and less than 3 weeks ago his Pops (grandpa)

I am so grateful to have had a few moments and a really good conversation with him at his Grandfathers service…
I am actually in shock about losing one….
Personally, I have lost a half dozen people over this past year or so
some naturally, and yes, some unnecessarily, it’s heartbreaking; I would never be so disrespectful and post derogatory statements about anyone in a situation that has brought so much confusion and heartache to so, so , many of us!
Thanks again for the support
and for any of you that may have some kind of opinion about things
pray to whoever you believe in for both of those souls and thank God it wasn’t one of your loved ones…kids, siblings, nieces or nephews…
Reality is
sometimes someone should really keep an opinion they may have to their self
Empathy & or at least a little consideration
RIP Antony Fuimaono the 1st, 2nd, and the 3rd
you are all immensely missed and never forgotten
Love you all
Always…
