The lightning storms that have been consuming acres with aggressive speed across northwestern California are now believed to have claimed a victim. The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office announced that Ken Lee Oliver, a 71-year-old resident of Scott Bar, was found deceased in the early morning hours of August 16th, lying in the driveway of his home on Roxbury Drive off Scott River Road north of Fort Jones.

The Head Fire, which had erupted on August 15th, grew quickly to an inferno that forced widespread evacuations and the closure of key roads, including Highway 96. The fire’s explosive growth took many by surprise, as it swiftly devoured over 3,000 acres of land and prompted escalating evacuation orders across miles of Siskiyou County.

In response to this devastating incident, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office expressed its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Oliver. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation, and authorities have announced that an autopsy will be conducted in the near future to determine the exact cause of death.

Local communities, once known for their tranquility, were plunged into chaos as the Head Fire’s fierce flames raced through neighborhoods, reducing homes and cherished memories to ashes. The relentless efforts of the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Deputies and first responders were dedicated to evacuating residents from the path of destruction, ensuring their safety in the face of an unpredictable and unrelenting threat.

My childhood home burned. My family heard the explosions coming from the Oliver homestead. Diane (Ken’s wife) was a teacher’s aide at KRUES. I remember her teaching me pottery and helping with costumes for our holiday plays. My heart is breaking for all of my family and friends that have lost and are in danger of losing their homes. My Grams, aunt, uncle and cousins were lucky to make it out alive. They had to drive through flames to make it out. It’s just all so devastating.
