Reports out of Redwood Valley this evening indicate a possible trespassing incident resulted in a property owner shooting an alleged trespasser. The suspected shooter is detained and the victim is reportedly not breathing.

Scanner traffic beginning around 7:51 p.m. indicated that a victim was reportedly shot in the chest at the 2000 block of Richards Road which prompted law enforcement and emergency personnel to respond Code 3 (with lights and sirens to the location).

Scanner traffic suggests the reporting party was the shooter. Dispatchers gave the reporting party explicit instructions about securing the firearm.

As of 8:21 p.m., emergency personnel are reporting the gunshot victim has three gun shots in the chest and does not appear to be breathing or have a pulse. CPR on the patient has begun.

Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.

UPDATE 8:23 p.m.: Personnel on scene confirmed the patient has passed away as a result of the gunshot wounds.

Small towns are great. Small towns where people know and respect each other, talk to each other- they are the backbone of America… which is a great country. Until the triggered judgemental self-righteous urbanites take over…

Small towns don’t suck, although Redwood Valley and outside Potter Valley do have more than their share of violent racists. Card carrying white supremacists.. Those cowardly incompetent mentally unstable fuck heads who will shoot someone in the head and run.

It’s wrong to assume all country people are racists, educated or not. I have been personally threatened with death by gunshot by supremacists in that general area. But I can certainly say I know very few if any people who personally have to keep in mind such threats on a daily basis that blame all country people or call all country people racists. It’s not OK to trade one bigoted opinion with another bigoted opinion which is what you have just done.

Bigots and racists do suck, every single one of them. Small town people do not suck.

What exactly is racist? Could you please provide a definition? Why, exactly, is racism a universally bad thing? Before you answer, please ponder the following: If you had the assignment of finding the best long distance runner in the world for the Olympics, where would you look? Would you go to northern Greenland or the N slope of Alaska? Vietnam, perhaps? Or, would you have more success in Kenya? How about a world champion weight lifter? Vietnam, perhaps? Or, would you have more success in, say Poland?. Isn`t this simply acknowledging what is obvious and irrefutable — that people have evolved different characteristics over many thousands of years. This has been to adapt to widely differing environments, both physical and social.

You ask: “Why, exactly, is racism a universally bad thing?” Given your penchant for making what appear to be intentionally ignorant, insensitive and inflammatory comments, it’s hard to know if you’re being serious or not. But I’ll bite.

Racism is centered on the belief, usually espoused by white people, that other racial or ethnic groups are inherently inferior. The belief in the superiority of one race over others is used to justify prejudicial, discriminatory and dehumanizing treatment of other racial groups. Taken to extremes racism can lead to genocide.

Sad conclusion about small towns. All size towns have assholes. Perhaps they stick out in a small town because there are so few of them. You don’t notice them in the city because they’re so common. Stay “down below.” (Below Mendocino).

That these posts stand unmoderated is evidence that this site is what it is. Civility is not valued by the moderators nor do insults get deleted. Only some get deleted. Others are encouraged.

The journalists don’t write the comments. You’d feel better, but maybe be burying your head in the sand if all the comments you disagreed with were hidden from you? An echo chamber doesn’t educate you. Practice calling bullshit on nonsense, and find common ground with those you disagree with. That’s good for all of us.

The moderators claim they have rules. Of which the first two are “Civility is valued by the moderator.
Insulting other commenters will get you deleted. Do it too often and you will get banned.” So while journalists don’t write the comments, moderators, who in this case are what was meant, do decide whether they stay or not. And frankly it’s not unclear that saying to someone “You are emblematic of everything that’s wrong with America today” is an insult.

Also it is possible, really it is, to call bullshit on nonsense without insults to the person. For example what I’m doing now.

Unless your goal is to escalate every comment into a spew of insults. Then you’re right.

If the dead guy wasn’t armed, the shooter will go to prison!
Simple as that.

Actually it is not that simple.but I can see you already have your opinion and not open the learning

As more information comes to light we will know more. In CA you are allowed to defend yourself. Chances are the shooter was defending themselves since they called the cops.

The shooter thought they were protecting themselves. Still, if they were in the right, they’re going through the legal process. Which might be worse than simply directing a stranger to the correct address.
Go watch the B horror movie “Willits”. The tweaker honestly believes he’s threatened by aliens.

So if a person attacks you with his fists or says he’s going to choke you to death, you are not allowed to shoot him to prevent the beating or strangling? You are confusing the idea of that there is a presumption under the law with idea of actual facts- if someone breaks into your house, the law will assume self defense as a justification for shooting someone. Without that, self defense needs to be proven. But in all cases, self defense is justification.

Well it doesn’t look great for the shooter that it was 3 shots to the chest, does it?

Depends completely on circumstances. I am not a lawyer, but if I was attacked by an adult male anywhere, but especially in my home, and wound up shooting him, one shot or three is academic and pointless. I feel no need to submit a questionnaire about intent. Why is three shots suspicious to you? Talking about a full-on assault. We’ll see how it plays out when facts are known.

Well Joe, you know things to be fact about the situation that support your ridiculous comment? Most likely not. One of the biggest problems in our country is people taking advantage of our decreasing rights to defend ourselves and what some of us have worked hard for. If the trespasser was up to no good and attempting to take advantage of someone and their personal property……then yep, fuck around and find out! Straight up!!!!! If both people are worthless, well…..

Agreed. And what ever happened to warning shots (spontaneous target practice)? I’ve done a couple over the decades and they worked just fine….at least you find out if they’re armed and a serious danger (Most are not)

Until all the facts are known, hard to comment on this particular situation. However we do have the right to defend our private property and ourselves and family. One should never look forward to this kind of outcome but be prepared for it if it happens.

Can we call this a shooting incident instead of a trespassing incident? Maybe consider referring to the shooter as the shooter rather than the property owner. And the victim rather than the trespasser? It all shapes the way readers understand the incident, and things in general.

So Glen you want the author to choose language that fits your narrative. How about you write your own article and let Matt write this one. It is so weird that you want the story spun in a way that makes you comfortable.

Fine. But, you see my point. It’s not neutral language in the story. If there’s more relevant information that makes one party responsible, it’s not in the story. And yes, my bias is that I’m more concerned with murder than trespassing. But I can afford to have a bias more than, say, a journalist can. I’m trying to talk about bias and language, not about property rights and kickin’ ass. (Refering to commentators, not to Matt). Sound reasonable?

The article refers to the trespasser as the victim (twice) and the property owner as the shooter (twice). Maybe next time try reading the full story
before commenting?

“The suspected shooter is detained and the victim is reportedly not breathing.”

“Scanner traffic…indicated that a victim was reportedly shot….”

“Scanner traffic suggests the reporting party was the shooter.”
