Daniella Moore Sentenced to Serve 15 Years to Life in Prison

Daniella Moore
Press release from the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office:
Today, Judge Kelly Neel sentenced Eureka woman, Daniella Patricia Moore (43 years), to serve 15 years to life in state prison for the murder of 19-year-old Hannah Hayhurst, and assault with a deadly weapon upon Misty Miller. Family and friends of Ms. Hayhurst addressed Moore and Judge Neel, sharing the anguish, loss and heartbreak caused by these terrible crimes.
On July 4, 2019, Moore attacked Misty Miller causing significant wounds to her head. Some hours later, Moore stabbed and disemboweled Hannah Hayhurst, leaving her body near the foot of Hilfiker Lane in Eureka. Moore then drove to Garberville, still dressed in clothing drenched in Ms. Hayhurst’s blood. Sheriff’s deputies located her there in the early morning hours of July 5. Moore appeared to be psychotic, a condition that evidence indicated was brought on by use of illegal narcotics. Deputies initially intended to detain Moore on a mental health hold pursuant to Welfare and Institutions Code section 5150, but soon realized she was a suspect in the Eureka Police Department’s (E.P.D.) investigation into the suspected homicide of Ms. Hayhurst. They transferred her into the custody of E.P.D. officers. Detective C. Watson led the investigation into the murder, ultimately arresting Moore for the murder of Ms. Hayhurst. The additional investigative efforts of Detective R. Harpham led to evidence revealing Moore as the previously unidentified assailant of Misty Miller.
The District Attorney filed charges against Moore for her crimes against both victims, including allegations that Moore had tortured Ms. Hayhurst. The torture allegations made Moore eligible for a sentence of life without the possibility of parole. Moore initially pled not guilty by reason of insanity to the charges, and the court appointed three forensic psychologists to evaluate Moore. Two of the three filed reports indicating their expert opinion that Moore was, in fact, not guilty by reason of insanity when she committed her offenses. One of the psychologists disagreed, and he opined that she was sane. If found true by a jury, Moore’s insanity plea would have made her eligible to serve her sentence at a mental health facility and could have resulted in her release if she was found to have recovered from her mental illness.
Prior to trial, on February 24, 2023, Moore changed her plea to guilty of violations of Penal Code sections 187(a), murder in the second degree, and 245(a)(1), assault with a deadly weapon. She also withdrew her previously entered pleas of not guilty by reason of insanity and waived her right to appeal. As part of the plea, District Attorney Stacey Eads agreed to dismissal of the torture allegations, which had made Moore eligible for a sentence of life-without-parole.
District Attorney Eads stated: “I extend my deepest sympathies to Hannah’s family and friends for the unbearable grief and tragedy suffered with the loss of her life. Although evidence demonstrated Ms. Moore experienced severe psychosis when she committed her violent crimes, her years of voluntary methamphetamine use significantly attributed to her mental state. Ms. Moore will now serve her sentence in prison, not a state hospital, and be held accountable for her choices that led to her senseless acts of violence and tragic loss of a young life. She is serving a life sentence, and my office will vehemently oppose her release on parole under any circumstances.”

Solyent green would be a more cost effective solution.
Good thinking!
You wanna eat that?!
She had had almost 20 cases against her before this. One was for felony assault in 2015. There were other felonies as well. Just wonder why the 3 strikes law couldn’t have been applied as well. Three serious felonies puts somebody away for 25 to life.

A Very weak sentence for murdering and disemboweling a person. She’ll be out in 7 years to reoffend.
Probably not. Go to the parole hearings, or write a letter. Our family lost a mom to domestic violence. The POS perp is on year 25 of a 25 to life sentence. His first parole hearing was 10 years in. Second one at 20. Denied both times. Now he so old it’d almost be better revenge to let him out to be homeless?
I’m very sorry to hear your family lost a mom to domestic violence but I’m happy to read the POS is still doing time. If Daniella Moore had killed a family member of mine, I would attend her parole hearings and write numerous letters. She could still wind up in Atascadero State Hospital and released early, when allegedly cured. I watched many killers transferred from state prison to Atascadero State Hospital.
I understand that some people hold the belief that murderers cannot be rehabilitated, but I believe that this is a limited and pessimistic view. While it is true that some individuals who commit murder may never be able to fully reintegrate into society, it is not fair to make a blanket statement that all murderers are beyond rehabilitation.
Studies have shown that many offenders can be successfully rehabilitated through a combination of therapy, education, and vocational training. Rehabilitation programs can help individuals understand the root causes of their behavior, develop coping mechanisms to manage their emotions, and learn new skills that can help them lead productive lives.
Furthermore, it is important to remember that people are not defined by their worst actions. Just because someone has committed a heinous crime does not mean that they are irredeemable or incapable of change. Everyone deserves a chance to grow and learn from their mistakes.
Of course, rehabilitation is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and some offenders may require more intensive treatment than others. But I believe that it is our duty as a society to provide opportunities for rehabilitation and reintegration to those who have committed crimes, including murder. By doing so, we can help prevent future crimes and create a safer, more just world for all.
“Everyone deserves a chance to grow and learn from their mistakes.”
No. No they don’t. This is a disembowelment, not stealing candy from the liquor store.
People deserve protection from people like her. Some people have to live around the scary people on the street. Evidently you don’t.
Agreed. Ms. Hayhurst deserved to grow and learn, not the incarcerated.
I think
“I am an AI’s” comment should be deleted. It is offensive to the family of Ms. Hayhurst.
Moore committed a heinous crime and is too dangerous to ever be let out.
Just wanted to add Moore drove from the Myrtle gas station to the hikshari trail parking lot with that poor girl that she preyed on.
We don’t want anybody driving around Eureka assaulting and murdering woman then driving to garberville where she acted so crazy she was put on a 51/50 hold.
She’s 5 feet 10, how could anybody defend themself against that size of a murderer.
Moore’s killing times make her too dangerous to ever be let out.
Prometheus said this murderer would be out in 7 to reoffend. The commenter didn’t say murderers in general could not be rehabilitated.
You said it is true that some individuals who commit murder may never be able to fully reintegrate into society so it is not fair and it’s pessimistic of you to make a blanket statement that this murderer can be rehabilitated.
The murderer can do whatever rehabilitation behind bars she wants as long as she stays there and never gets out.
Save the sympathy for the 19 year old that was murdered.
I don’t disagree with anyone who thinks she should get the death penalty, or at least LWOP. But that’s not the way the law works. The Supreme Court says it’s cruel and unusual to execute a mentally ill person. And had she gone to trial and been found not guilty by reason of insanity, she could have been released as soon as she was declared restored to sanity. By accepting a plea to 2nd degree with a 15 to life sentence the DA avoided those risks. And if future DAs do their job she might still wind up doing life.
Daniella was crazy but in a very sane way… I had a job where she was employed for a brief period of time… she was a loose cannon then, often speaking about how people should have to serve for their crimes… she was particularly opinionated towards the death sentence by means of street justice … I guess you could say she wholeheartedly supported the criminal justice system of vigilantism
You don’t get restored to sanity if you were insane enough to murder somebody. It’s a famously bad defense move to plea insanity. Dressing up nice, and calmly pointing out how sane you are is a sure sign of psychopathy! There are some famous examples of people faking insanity for a violent crime and getting stuck in prison way longer than a standard sentence.
Nick Cruz the Florida Parkland school shooter tried to play crazy after his arrest. Video of his ridiculous attempts are used in criminal psychology classes to point out tell tale behaviors of fakers.
The death penalty, aside from moral issues, is just not smart. If we can fly to the moon and also cure so many diseases that we couldn’t not long ago then there is a chance if we invest more we can learn more and prevent much of the violence and suffering but not if we kill the perpetrators.
Heinous murderers are usually a result of enviornoment and before you go saying how there are people who have suffered who did not become murderers just stop and think for a second because there are many factors: age and nature of abuse/s suffered, was there help? were there numerous perpetrators? did those abused have any company/solace/protective factors? Many many factors go into creating people which is why so many parents work so hard and are careful to do right by their own children yet when judging others act like childhood doesn’t matter much.
Disagree on a moral level and from a deterrence factor killers that are let out are much more likely to reoffend. Most of are major cities are as dangerous as they have ever been. 1/2 a million leaving the bay area alone. This biblical exodus is because policy is disconnected from reality. The reality is abolish the death penalty and release vicious murderers after just a few years and you will be dealing with the same people more than once. The 18 year old girl brutally murdered by the released murderer from Ukiah is a prime example. That girls parents don’t agree with his sentence and she might not be the only one he’s killed since his release.
Economic inequality can lead to increases in crime in a number of ways. Here are a few examples:
Overall, economic inequality can lead to increases in crime by creating a sense of desperation, limiting opportunities for legal economic advancement, creating social unrest, and denying people access to basic resources and opportunities. Addressing economic inequality through policies such as progressive taxation, social safety nets, and access to education and job training can help to reduce crime rates and create a more just society.
1.
There was a lot of inequality for the victims.
2. There are no resources for the victim because Moore killed her.
3.
There isn’t job training for the victim because moore murdered her.
4. The victim was denied an education because Moore killed her.
Read what Moore did. Absolutely horrific.
“Attorneys, presenting their arguments before Cockrum made his ruling, focused not on the murder charge but on the special allegation that Hayhurst was tortured. Assistant District Attorney Stacy Eads pointed out that Hayhurst was conscious and aware as she was being stabbed repeatedly all over her body. It’s possible she was still alive when the attacker removed vital organs from her body, Eads said.
“Ms. Moore’s intent was to inflict pain and suffering,” she said.”

The compassion should be for the victims. Not for the perp.
Moore should never be let out. She deserves the electric chair for what she did!
Moore was on probation at the time she murdered Ms. Hayhurst and assaulted misty with a deadly weapon.
“Moore had a misdemeanor probation case with a vandalism charge which was trailing the homicide case. She admitted probable cause, admitted probation violation and waived her right to a probation hearing today. “
https://johnchiv.blogspot.com/2022/08/defense-makes-offer-moore-admits.html?m=1
Stop and think for a moment, a 19 year old girl was tortured and murdered by somebody she didn’t know for no reason, by Moore
who was already on probation for something else.
Somebody said she’s eligible for parole in 15 years. But you never know. The guy that stabbed the cab driver for no reason was let out early then he killed a couple more people. In about 10 or 20 years the prosecutor might retire, the community members that don’t want her preying on them might not be aware of her parole hearing etc.
She should not be let out ever.
Yes we have seen astonishing cases where the murderer who was supposed to do “Life” or “A lot of years” catches a break and comes out to kill some more. It’s actually a great argument for the death sentence. I read scientific journals and I also believe we are at least 2 Billion people heavy for this planet to sustain us. And so the death sentence sounds like a very easy way to at least start correcting that imbalance. Allow a sick killer to live and feed and house them and right there – due to lack of resources available- you are making sure some innocent child somewhere gets nothing to eat, nowhere to shelter. I think the insane fad of Misplaced Compassion has about run it’s course. I sure hope so. This woman is a sick and sad violent broken human who should be put down humanely to make room for others. The idea that we will let her out again after feeding and clothing and sheltering her while we deny those things to innocent children is …incredibly cruel and stupid and not compassionate at all.
Farce…one word was enough. LOL. “Scientific journals”…does that include ones that also note the rate of wrongful incarceration and those that report violent people are more often created by conditions than born? We do very little to care well for one another and particularly the vulnerable and killing those canaries in our coal mine isn’t wise whereas studying and learning how to avoid such people being created and how to invest in mental health etc. will do us all ultimately much more good.
Exactly. Moore should never be let out. We need to have compassion for the one killed, not the murderer.
That is Jason Warren. Total psychopath. Sociopath. You name the path, he is it.
Should have been given the electric chair. Worthless usa justice system.
Total psych case.
15 years, what a fucking joke
If she is that dangerious for any reason ie drug use mentally ill etc she should face the death penality At some point some people are just to dangerios to keep around no matter what the reason.
She tortured and eviscerates a young woman and gets 15 years to life? Good gawd! What is wrong with the justice system? She should never be out in society again. Just like Hannah will never have the opportunity to be in society again.
Why did she kill Hannah?
From the looks of it, a meth love triangle.
I read they didn’t know each other.
According to the news articles Hannah was a total stranger to the convicted and the convicted murdered the 19 year old girl for absolutely no reason.
Misty, the other woman the convicted seriously assaulted hours before the killing time, may have been known the convicted, but Misty was able to survive.
Where did you read that? They were both down by the water front in the middle of the night.
The lost coast. Moore and Ms. Hayhurst left the Shell gas station on Myrtle in Moore’s car.
Ms. Hayhurst’s body was found at the Hikshari Trail’s parking lot.
Did not read whether the 19 year old girl, was murdered by the 5 foot 10 inch tall 40 year old Moore at the location she was found or on the way there.
This is the copy from the lost coast.
“There’s no evidence that Ms. Moore knew Ms. Hayhurst,” Russo said. “There’s no proof of motive, no reason to think it was for revenge.”
As to whether the two women knew each other,
video surveillance at a Shell service station and minimart on July 3, 2019, shows Hayhurst entering the Myrtle Avenue store about 10:45 p.m. on July 3, 2019. This morning former Eureka police Senior Detective Ron Harpham, who viewed video evidence in the case, said Moore drove up and ran into the store “and started talking to Hannah.”
Then, Harpham said, both Moore and Hayhurst left in Moore’s car.”

Do you get it?
I didn’t put the link in because I wasn’t sure Ms. Kyme would want that. But since you asked there it is.
Holy crap what a joke! No justice for the sweet, young kid she stabbed to death when all she did was show her kindness and gave her a ride when she didn’t have to. No justice has been served in this case.
Hannah did not give Daniella a ride Hannah got into a car with a stranger ! all that for a bit off the pipe ! make better choices people
The video footage shows Moore and Ms. Hayhurst leaving in moore’s car.
But I agree with you that Moore should have gotten at least life without parole.
https://lostcoastoutpost.com/2021/jul/7/moore-stand-trial/
Holy crap, I have dealt with her a couple months before her killing people moments. Glad I am not injured or dead. Wow
She tried camping out in front of my business, and I gently moved her on, she was out there . Offered to call for help and she freaked out, didn’t want services from the county
So glad I didn’t have other people ls fate when I dealt with her
Is there any technique you used to avoid the teenager’s fate? Any tips would be appreciated.
So if you’re basically a stranger she’ll leave you alone? Hope she is never let out.
I looked it up. The victim was a stranger. So maybe offering to call for services is the technique to avoid being the victim of her killing and torturing people time. Got it!
Life with no possibility to ever be released should have been the sentence
Agreed.
I concur…
I love this website!! Its the closest you can get to an S. Clay Wilson comic taken life. There aren`t any demons or pirates. However, there is plenty of murder, violence, mayhem, non – specific degeneracy and perversion. A disembowling! Thats a new one!
Insane? Long term meth addict?
Murder? Mental facility? How many second chances has she had?
Transfer this maggot to a state where they’ll fire up “old sparky” and rid us of her presence on earth.
Lock her loser boyfriend up too, that coward is the reason behind all this insanity. So many scum humans trolling in that area.
This is by far the most ignorant comment. Lock up her boyfriend? For what? For being a loser? Have you taken a look around Eureka???? He is the reason Hannah was murdered? That is plain stupid and a loser comment . In fact, by that logic, maybe you should be locked up too.
I guess you haven’t read about him in all of the meth arrests, impregnates her with twins and ditches them. Are you one of those people that supports liberalism?
I believe she was psychotic at the time she was murdering another woman. It is an unusually brutal crime for a woman to do. I also believe she may be aware of that now that she has been arrested and kept in jail, perhaps she sleeps at night.
I just don’t think she should be let go after “mental health treatment”. It’s not like psychiatry has a great record of fixing people and it is a polite fiction that they do with pills. Mostly they just sedate the psychotic until the patients start showing signs of tardive dyskinesia.
What I think should happen is she should be forced into drug treatment. Kept in prison because her drug habit was the cause of the psychosis to disembowel another woman in public. Keep that one in prison because they will not keep away from drugs .
There are drugs in prison. I don’t know the answers but drugs are everywhere!
There are a number of states, Arizona and Georgia among them, that allow for a verdict of “guilty but insane”. That results in the defendant being sent to a state mental health facility until they are “cured”. And then they go to the state penitentiary to serve their sentance. Sounds like a reasonable approach to me.
What is the point of “Curing” someone then punishing them for a crime they committed while verifiably insane? I’m not saying she should ever be released. The prison system might just mess them up again.
Condolences to the victim. RIP. Terrible crime. Did the convicted know her victim or were they strangers?
I’m stunned. The convicted should have gotten life without the possibility of parole like the guy that killed the priest.
This crime has a very sympathetic victim, a teenage girl with no connection to the convicted, not domestic, they did not know each other.
So in 15 years people will have to deal with the convicted again, opposing her release so she’s not let out?
Her crime makes her too dangerous to ever be let out.
Yeah, reminds me a lot of Gary Bullock who killed the priest. I wonder if she was on bath salts. I saw Gary that day, my dog kept him from breaking into my house twice while I was home. He wasn’t on just meth, he looked and acted like he was possessed. Bat shit crazy and scary. Not just talking to ghosts but swatting at them, swatting at the air and having a full on growling conversation with them. More sounds than words. I think he was on bath salts or something.
Yup. She should be kept away from people for a very long time. So sad for her victims and family.
let’s correct some parts of your article please just so we have basic facts correct !
Mrs Moore assaulted Misty 7/3/2019! she was located in the early morning of July 4th not July 5th !!!!
“ Moore appeared to be psychotic, a condition that evidence indicated was brought on by use of illegal narcotics. ” where did you learn this information!
During the preliminary hearings the first officer that approached her that morning stated he was trained in drug related psychosis and Mrs Moore did not appear to be having a drug related episode ! Also she was never drugged tested once arrest, or if she was must have been no evidence of her under the influence because it’s never been reported in any article or ever brought up during preliminary hearing .
let’s touch on Misty for a second ! If Misty hadn’t held the information of who assaulted her that evening perhaps Hannah would still be alive !!!Misty choose to not give up Daniellas name when asked until months later when she was arrested and used that information as leverage on her crime !
District Attorney Eads stated “She is serving a life sentence, and my office will vehemently oppose her release on parole under any circumstances.”
if the DA was so adamant about her case she should have taken it to trial.. She shouldn’t have offered a plea! Stand for your beliefs, stand up for your case and all the evidence you have stand behind the detectives .
the DA knew her case had flaws due to Daniella’s mental health!
she knew that Daniella’s DR failed her when she seemed help for postpartum she knew that the sheriffs office failed when a welfare check was reported , she knew that the hospital failed when daniella asked for help, and she knew that those phycologist were powerful with their reports !
In no way do I think Mrs Moore shouldn’t pay for what she did and as she states all she can give is her time !
Hannah her mother and her father paid the ultimate price for this broken system !
Hopefully as a community and as a county Eureka needs to look at the bigger picture and how did the systems in place to protect FAIL Miss Hayhurst and Mrs Moore ! those are the questions these forum should be asking and the people who comment who only know bits and pieces of this very large picture should be advocating for !
The system failed two young women !!! and even after this the system still isn’t working on being fix it’s flawed system ! I pray for all involved, our community and our broken system
please pray for Mr Hayhurst
and his battles with his mental health challenges after loosing his only child and his wife! i hope the systems in place don’t fail him
Absolutely our mental hell system causes so much suffering and alieviates very little.
This comment is written based off ignorance and emotion. The DA Office has to critically analyze cases when making plea deals. There are many factors involved, including the effect a trial would have on the victim’s family. And to attack Misty? Blame her? That is just nasty. You don’t know her situation. People on the street don’t go to the cops to solve there disputes. How can you speculate that Hannah would be alive if another victim would have called the cops? Just gross. And anyone who guts someone in the street is psychotic. Whether induced by drugs or mental health issues. Also, your comment has a victim mentality. Everyone else’s fault. That’s the problem. Tell me when one takes responsibility for themselves?
Liberal laws produce unjust results. This woman should have been executed.
I’ll Donate the Bullet
I’ll provide the weapon…
Did she kill Patrick swayze in ghost?
Have sone respect for the family of the 19 year old.
