Identities Released in McKinleyville Domestic Violence Murder-Suicide Investigation
The February 6 deaths of two McKinleyville residents have been determined to be a murder-suicide according to Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer, Samantha Karges.
Officers responded to a residence in the affluent neighborhood of Kristin Lane in McKinleyville at 1:05 p.m. after a neighbor called 9-1-1 reporting the sound of gunshots. Upon arrival, HCSO deputies located the bodies of 63-year-old Charles Dory and 54-year-old Marya Dory.
Karges stated that the manner of death for Marya was determined homicide by gunshot, while Charles’s death was determined to be a suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Although no reports of domestic violence were reported to the HCSO, interviews with family and friends during the death investigation revealed that the deaths were likely the cause of domestic violence.
The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) reports, “On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men.”
Nationally, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced severe physical violence, including beating, burning, and/or strangulation, at some point in their life.
Within the state, 34.9% of Californian women and 31.1% of Californian men experience physical violence, sexual violence and/or stalking from an intimate partner within their lifetimes.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office reported 311 incidents of domestic violence in 2021, a 15% increase from 2020.
Nationally, according to the NCADV, “72% of all murder-suicides involve an intimate partner; 94% of the victims of these murder suicides are female.”
Additionally, 20% of the victims during intimate partner homicides “not the intimate partners themselves, but family members, friends, neighbors, persons who intervened, law enforcement responders, or bystanders,” according to a study cited by the NCADV.
A double homicide in Humboldt County at the end of 2022 was determined to be a domestic violence situation where a woman reportedly attempted to leave her abusive boyfriend. The boyfriend, Russell Albers, later located the woman at her sister’s residence where Albers shot her and three other people at the residence, killing the woman’s sister and brother-in-law, leaving their 4-year-old daughter orphaned.
Karges reminds the public that there are available services for those facing domestic violence.

It’s such a shame in these murder/suicides that the shooter doesn’t do the suicide first….
Yeah. Exactly my sentiments. These shooters have lousy priorities. And it would be convenient to have a survivor to tell what happened.
This is horrible. What is being done to prevent domestic violence? Do we have a safe haven for partners at risk?
On June 30th my daughter-in-law filed for divorce and when she got home, punched my step-son in the face in front of one of the kids. He called the cops on her. She made the kids lie to the cops. Fortunately boys copy their dads so my grandchildren will not grow up to be wife beaters. Winning?
Sure she did. o_O
Violance against men is very under reported due to cultural taboo of men being victims of women.
One of my cousins was a big strong guy that never hit women but his ex used to beat the c rap out of him all the time because he would not fight back physically.
One day she was beating him alongside the road. The cops stopped and pulled her off him and asked if he wanted to press charges. He declined and they left. If it had been the other way around he would have been arrested.
Hope the best for your step son and kids but he is not alone in this.
My brother went through the police academy in a major SoCal city in the mid 1990s. They told officers that if your spouse was attacking you, put your hands in your pocket, providing you feel safe enough to do so. My brother and his wife were having issues and she began to beat on him. He put his hands in his pockets. Meanwhile, a neighbor called the police over the noise. When they arrived, he was immediately pulled aside and cuffed. She was interviewed and even admitted, “all he did was stand there with his hands in his pockets.” He didn’t press charges, but, he did get a divorce.
Yep. Just as I thought. Husband kills wife and himself after years of abusing her.
It’s a femicide and they keep calling it “domestic violence”. Isolated incident that keeps happeing over and over. Family anniliators killing women and children.
From:
https://www.femicideincanada.ca/about/history:
“The first documented use of the term ‘femicide’ was in a book by John Corry (1801) called “A Satirical View of London at the Commencement of the Nineteenth Century” where it was used to refer to the killing of a woman.”
Men killing women isn’t satire. It is very real.
The book was satire…
I researched the term “femicide” and reported the name and year published of the book where the term “femicide” was 1st used. Too bad that you don’t like the title of the book but it is what it is.
Yes, it is “real,” but around 80% of homicides committed by men are against other men.
Do you have evidence for the “years of abusing her” comment? Please provide a link. Snide attacks on people who cannot defend themselves is as much without honor as Dory’s murder of his wife and suicide.
De mortuis nil nisi bonum
Her best friend (whom I know) stated it was a long, abusive marriage and she was leaving him.
Not all that long of a marriage, but abusive for sure. It’s somewhat surprising to find the abuser is the female. People who don’t know the couple automatically assume it’s the man. That’s not always true.
The husband killed the wife then himself. Stop pretending otherwise it is really disturbing to people who knew them like neighbors and family. Have some respect for facts.
I am respecting the facts. I’m closer to them than you or any neighbor. I think you’re the one who doesn’t know them or the facts.
The HUSBAND IS THE KILLER. Respect those facts.
Jesus Christ, lady. Calm down. I have never disputed THAT FACT. nowhere did I say that. You are the one who posted lopsided information on the internet that you received third hand. People are devastated and you did not take that into consideration or that there might be a back story. You just posted. And now you feel the need to jump all over me. SMDH.
This commenter has a history of getting triggered by any story involving gender. It’s best to just let them rant.
Funny. It’s you who are triggered every time I comment.
Lord knows we wouldn’t want to cast aspersions on this man’s character, right after murdered his spouse…
Would venture to say when a man chooses to end a woman’s life in this manner it’s not the first time that he did something inappropriate to her. Likewise, if a woman chooses to end a man’s life in this manner it’s not the first time that she’s been inappropriate to him. Rarely is a domestic violence murder suicide the first time that a toxic situation raised its head in the relationship.
Ya I had an ex-bf break into my parents where I’d gone to stay because he was harassing me. I woke up to a belt buckle to the face then him on top of me strangling me. After about 2hrs of him holding me down by the neck, slapping spitting on me, he let loose bcuz he had to pee. It gave me just enough time to knock the phone off the hook and dial 911. He came flying out punched me and hung up the phone but I heard her say 911 what’s the emergency. In those days they called back if it got disconnected and if you didn’t answer police just showed up. Which they did. He was arrested. I was told an emergency restraining order would be issued, relieved I went home. He was out and knocking (banging) on my door a few hours later…! Restraining orders are useless protection against domestic violence..
But, if situation arises where you need to kill dude in self defense ,a restraining order would help cover your ass…
Lisa– Not sure if the whole thing is a press release or not but that last paragraph is in serious need of some editing.
According to statistics, about domestic violence murder/suicide situations, the woman is the murder victim 94% of the time .So this isn’t really one of those “ both sides are equally guilty” scenarios. Y,all are acting like it’s a team sport.
https://ncadv.org/STATISTICS
That is why that statistic is so lopsided. Because they keep pretending women are “just as violent” when it is very clear that is just not true.
It’s femicide. Mexico has admitted there is a femicide in Mexico, America has not.
What is happening to MMIW is also an example, no longer do they talk about women and children murdered and missing it’s all “people” to hide the real victims and the real murderers. It happens so much that it is a lie that it is an “isolated incident”. It isn’t isolated at all. Happens again and again.
The percentage of men are abused is actually much higher but men are too proud to admit it to the police and would rather just move on with their life and leave the situation
Sure, more women are abusing and killing men and their children and they are too embarrassed to admit it. It’s why we rarely hear about it. Just covered up all the violence in the media. So embarrassing. I bet you are scared of little girls too.
That isn’t “pride”
sure thing, big rick…
