A tree fell on a home in the 800 block of Diamond Drive in Arcata about 11 a.m. today.

Two people were trapped in the upstairs of the home.

An ambulance responded to the scene and left with at least one patient.

Over this morning, we have heard at least five different tree into home calls over the scanner–at least one other one resulted in serious structural damage.

We’re also in Sunny Brae (over toward Sunny Brae Park) and our power’s still one. Flickering quite a bit.

It was – you can tell from the way it was growing at the base that it was attached to the tree next to it. That is always a weak spot. Around here, you need a good arborist at least as much as a good auto mechanic. Although many hazards are pretty obvious if you just look for them.

Hopefully someday Arcata changes their tree removal rules. As of right now you may only remove 4 large trees every 10 years. I think it would be sensible to allow homeowners to clear every tree within 100 feet of their home (or at least 50 feet).

Every human deserves to have sunlight and not to be afraid for their family’s lives during windstorms.

People live in neighborhoods like ours because we like the trees and accept some level of risk, you don’t have to buy a house in the forest if you don’t want to deal with that. The trees are what make these neighborhoods special

Maybe just clearing out the diseased trees would be okay?

Housing in the middle of trees is not ideal.

Huge redwood down at the bottom of Coombs. Thanks to my arborist for assessing our trees; Andy Waxman took down one that was rotting (I would not have known) It was leaning toward the house. My neighbors tree looks like it was rotting at the base. Luckily it fell on our easement and didn’t damage anything. I’m going to miss it, what a beauty she was!!!

SAFETY FIRST!!
We removed six ~80ft trees in 2021. They were 20 and 50 ft from the house!
Beautiful and miss grove?

Just like the high wind warning says; stay downstairs and away from windows. Good luck.
