First Case of Monkeypox Confirmed in Humboldt County
Press release from the Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS):
The Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) Public Health Branch confirmed today the first case of monkeypox in a Humboldt County resident.
This marks the first confirmed case of the infection in the county. Presently, the ill individual is doing well, self-isolating at home and appears to have no close contacts locally.
Monkeypox is a viral infection which is spread through close personal contact, including skin-to-skin contact, kissing and sex. Symptoms of monkeypox include:
- Fever
- Headache
- Muscle aches and backaches
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Chills
- Exhaustion
- Sore throat, nasal congestion or cough.
It may also include a rash located on or near the genitals or anus, as well as other areas such as the hands, feet, chest, face or mouth. The rash can look like pimples or blisters and may be painful or itchy. The rash will typically go through several stages including scabs before healing, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Monkeypox is a rare zoonotic infection caused by the monkeypox virus, which is in the same family as smallpox but less severe. The monkeypox virus is spread to humans from infected humans, animals and materials contaminated with the virus. The current outbreak has impacted mostly gay and bisexual men and men who have sex with men. Although the risk to the general U.S. population is low, the following tips can help keep you safe:
- Practice good hand hygiene
- Always talk to your intimate partner/s about recent illness, and be aware of new or unexplained sores or rashes on your body or your partner’s body, including on the mouth, genitals, anus and hands
- Avoid intimate contact, including sex, with people who have symptoms like sores or rashes
- Avoid contact with infected animals and materials containing the virus
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) like a mask, gown and gloves when caring for people with symptoms
- Infected people should isolate until their symptoms, including rash, have gone away completely.
DHHS Public Health received an allotment of 20 monkeypox vaccines earlier this month. Approximately a quarter of the allotment will be used to vaccinate staff in Humboldt and Del Norte counties who will be in charge of vaccinating community members. The additional vaccines are available in case of an outbreak. Staff has also been working closely with the California Department of Public Health and was able to place an order earlier this week for more vaccines. They are expected to arrive soon.
In addition, a small number of vaccines were sent to Public Health for laboratory staff who will be testing monkeypox samples in the lab.
Public Health also recently received more than 400 doses of an antiviral medication which would be made available for people with severe complications.
Additionally, people at high risk for severe monkeypox who are immunocompromised, 8 years old or younger, pregnant or breastfeeding or have a history of skin disease may also be eligible for the medication.
Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Candy Stockton said Public Health staff is fully equipped to respond to this case. “The experience learned in more than two years of COVID-19 response has provided staff with a lot of practice mobilizing quickly to assist in administering vaccines and getting individuals set up with the proper medications.”
Dr. Stockton added, “There is a significant difference between how monkeypox and COVID are spread. Monkeypox cases will not lead to widespread closures of schools and businesses in our community.”
While monkeypox is endemic to many Central and West African countries, there have been recent cases of monkeypox reported in non-endemic countries, including the U.S., Canada and the U.K., as well as other parts of Europe and Australia.
To date, there are just over 7,100 cases of monkeypox in the U.S., including more than 825 cases in California. On Thursday, the U.S. federal government declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency.
If you are experiencing symptoms or have been in contact with an individual who has tested positive for monkeypox, please contact your health care provider. If you do not have a provider, call Public Health at 707-445-6200.

Kym I would not show a picture of the vial if the person wishes to remain anonymous. Using my PC based bar code scanner I already know their name.
Forgive me if I’m being unduly skeptical but…it’s a photo I purchased from Can Stock Photo. It’s meant to be a representation not a real patient. After your statement, I looked to see if I could replicate your reading of a partial bar code and I couldn’t
Right? Might get another nickel for such behavior….
There are a whopping 61 mutations on the current strain of monkey pox. Double stranded DNA viruses DO NOT tend to mutate naturally. 61 mutations is NOT natural for this type of virus.
There was a car crash full of lab monkeys on the East Coast back in January, 2022. These lab monkeys were Macaque monkeys. Macaques are natural reservoir carriers of Monkey Pox virus. A woman at the scene of the car crash touched the monkeys and she developed symptoms of illness; she was put on anti-virals. This woman died less than a month later. A second citizen, a man traveling on the highway also stopped at the crash-scene. This man continued on his travels and has not been identified. The first case of human-to-human transmisaion of Monkey Pox was located only 300 miles from the original crash site.
Shouldn’t a condom be included in that list of PPE? Asking for a friend.
Of course. A full body condom.
Abstinence isn’t the end of the world
‘This thing is spreading. It’s here’: First Georgia woman with monkeypox speaks out about diagnosis.
Seaton is a cashier and believes she likely caught monkeypox at work.
“I just want y’all to know that I did not do anything sexual to contract this disease. This thing is spreading. It’s here,” Seaton said
She is one of four women in Georgia who are confirmed cases.

Has her version been verified? It sounds like “I caught it from a door knob”
Yeah, the old, “I got it from a toilet seat”, story would be a lot more believable, but it is the moneypox…
At least five children have tested positive for monkeypox in the U.S. since July…
Do some research on that..
That brings up all sorts of disturbing scenarios. But the point is, there is one group which has the largest share of infections, but we are not allowed to discuss that.
Why not ?
Yes you are and it has been discussed plenty on here
Exactly.
You might want to READ the entire press release where it says “gay” and “bisexual” men who have sex with men have been the most impacted. Hope that’s good enough for you. Anything else that “we are not allowed to discuss” bothering you? How about that Alex Jones, huh? Tormenting parents who’s child was murdered. Sure wish I could be a conservative. Praise Gawd-d!
My bad, I meant whose, not who’s. How do we edit our own stuff?
You should be seeing a gear symbol to the right of where it says reply. Near edge of screen. Click on that. Will say edit delete. If not appearing try moving cursor or finger over area. You are given about 20 minutes to edit.
Or you can delete at any time and repost..
Your first post was right on by the way..
Did you see that epic meme going around? Alex is a true boss.

In today’s society, you can’t expect compassion if you refuse to accept the consequences of a gun free zone and plenty of soft targets.
Monkeys? And what contact did it take to get monkeypox from them to humans? Or was it Gain of function research Lab Leak like Wuhan Flu? Perhaps our scholarly friends on RHBB can share the answers.
Hey, Giant Squirrel shouldn’t you be gathering your nuts for winter??
So is that a “I don’t know the origin of human monkeypox”? Our friend Guest has researched pandemic issues thoroughly so perhaps knows the answer.
Monkeypox was first seen in lab monkeys, but the media often states that outbreaks in Africa are usually caused by children handling or getting bitten by rodents. This is a link to The Who’s website that says they have not found the animal reservoir which means they don’t really know if it comes from rodents, another animal, or just circulates in people. https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/monkeypox
Most infected with Monkey Pox are homosexual men.

How many people have died from all other preventable disease?
Hunger, malnutrition,poverty?
Geez… that portion of the population susceptible to this disease are pedophiles, too????
Can’t they just isolate for several months and abstain???
Or this..

Ok chicken little…..
Ignorance can also can be spread by people..
Monkeypox is a GOP smear campaign aimed at the Biden administration. I wouldn’t doubt that the Fasc-tard Trumpster isn’t behind the whole Hoax. Next he will be saying he won the 2024 election without a vote and he was elected for life.
Now for all you Covid deniers, you see how ridiculous you sound. Maybe not, hard to get through to some people.
Just wear a mask over your butt and you will be fine.
Fowchee? You just ignorant?
No. I am evil. I work hand in hand with the Chinese to perfect the manipulation of viruses, with the end goal of producing strains that will selectively target groups of people having specific genetic traits.
Sad to see Trump is living rent free in your head…
i call bull shit how convent .another scare tackit to get you to stand in line like cattel. All most you are smart enugh to relise the goverment is trying to off every one with out the Is responsibility. Using people on the street ass genny pigs for a sci experment. “ The current outbreak has impacted mostly gay and bisexual men and men who have sex with men. “ that sounds like a biased assumption that could easily spread hatred and fear towards a targeted community. I have read that it seems that way solely because a gay man is typically more intuitive of their bodies than many others and are more likely to get tested when feeling sick.
LMFAO!!!
That is an assumption based on fact. It is not meant to spread hate, but caution. I agree that gay men have more reasons to run to the doctor at the first sign of illness, as the result of their high risk sexual activities.
Trying to repudiate their elevated risk and spreading of disease through irrational denial does not help their community, and is a dangerous folly.
Just remember. If you feed your dog a lot of cookies and pat them on the head regularly, they run a high risk of dying from a blown spleen no matter how much you love them. It’s called killing with kindness. (I’ll leave the border out of this)
My advice; Don’t be so “nice”.
I have read that 20% of the patients in Indiana were women because the state actually decided women could get tested there and other states have been refusing to test anyone but gay men, which destroys the credibility of all statistics. And also gay men “who have sex with men” are taught to always check their own and their partners privates for sores because they don’t want an incurable disease like herpes or genital warts. It is common sense not to “touch other people’s sores” for them too.
Will the monkeypox vaccine work?
Does it prevent infection?
Does it prevent transmission?
Do they have any firm idea what the vaccine does, or does not do, at all?
I think it kind of sounds like the answer is “no” to pretty much all of the above…

‘How well does the monkeypox vaccine actually work?’
“While health officials continue to emphasize the value of vaccination, there is limited evidence to show that the monkeypox vaccine is effective at preventing infection from the virus. CDC has acknowledged that “no data are available yet on the effectiveness of these vaccines in the current outbreak.”
“No data”? Hmmm….
How well does the monkeypox vaccine actually work?
While health officials continue to emphasize the value of vaccination, there is limited evidence to show that the monkeypox vaccine is effective at preventing infection from the virus. CDC has acknowledged that “no data are available yet on the effectiveness of these vaccines in the current outbreak.”
According to Jay Varma, director of the Cornell Center for Pandemic Prevention and Response, “It is absolutely critical that public health officials work on messaging this uncertainty to people about being vaccinated.”
“So far, much of the data on the monkeypox vaccine is from a retrospective analysis published in 1988, which examined whether a smallpox vaccine could also prevent monkeypox. In the study, researchers followed household contacts of 209 people in Zaire who had been infected with monkeypox and found that those who had scars from prior smallpox vaccination were 85% less likely to be infected.”
“According to Ira Longini, a biostatistician at the University of Florida, the study’s conclusions are limited, since its statistical analysis has no reported confidence interval and did not adjust for other factors, such as age. In addition, the data was based solely on physical signs of vaccination.”
The study “is the only shred of evidence we have (in regard to vaccine effectiveness), which is pretty weak,” he said. “In principle it should work, but we don’t know.”
“Richard Kennedy, co-director of the Mayo Vaccine Research Group, agreed, saying that the Jynneos vaccine and an older smallpox vaccine ACAM2000 “have not been tested directly against smallpox or monkeypox” and that “[t]he immune responses they create are very close to first- or second-generation vaccines: A little weaker, but not much.”
1988?
The current virus that we are dealing with is probably a somewhat different virus than the one that the vaccine was tested on in 1988…
It seems to be spreading differently…
Has it mutated?
But the vaccine is the same???
Hmmm…
Guest, do you know what I think is weird? First Moderna announcing they aren’t urgent to make a Monkeypox vaccine because there already is one, then the CEO from Pfizer going on the news and agreeing with the reporter that giving 1/5 of a dose of the Monkeypox vaccine to Americans would be experimenting on them and then promoting it. What’s weird, in my opinion, is neither Moderna or Pfizer announcing they’re working on a fast tracked vaccine because 1. there’s a bunch of demand for Monkeypox vaccines and 2. their stocks certainly went down because of their public statements and announcing they were even trying to make a vaccine would have made their stocks go up. I think they lied about fast-tracking the Covid vaccine and already had something and there’s plenty of evidence of that as I am sure you know. Also if you watch the interview with the Pfizer guy he seems actually scared while talking about Monkeypox and I have seen that guy talking before not looking that scared.
I sent an e-mail to you and the editors of the Lost Coast Outpost and the North Coast Journal a few days ago, with a list of links from legitimate sources. Did it go to everyone’s junk e-mail box? Was it ignored because it was from Adrienne Floreen? When you release these press releases please don’t just print the press release, you need to write something to give it context and fact check it. Like if they say one should “avoid contact with infected animals” you should write something on top saying that nobody is getting Monkeypox from infected animals and saying that has been called racist because it implies that people (in Africa) are touching dirty animals and being unclean. Or that it might be spread in other ways than “touching rashes” which also makes people sound unclean. I have had gay and trans room mates and they did not act like dirty promiscuous teenagers. I am just astonished that they are being portrayed as such by the media and even government press releases. When you print someone else’s words and they say something incorrect or insane, you should write something above it. Like when you printed the anti-vaxxer’s letter a few months ago and put something above it that it was incorrect but you respect all opinions.
It seems logical to me that LGBTQ persons are much like any other groups of people, some are fastidiously clean, some sloppy, and others who care more about that next hit on the meth pipe than anything else including std’s or monkeypox.
Lots of people in the Castro district willing to trade sex for meth.
