The new Salt Fire began about 2 p.m. yesterday and rapidly forced evacuations. By this morning it is estimated to have covered nearly 2800 acres and is 0% contained. Last night it forced the close of I-5.

According to Caltrans, northbound I-5 is closed approximately 10 miles north of Redding, at Fawndale. Southbound I-5 is closed approximately one mile south of Lakehead. “These are hard closures and traffic is not being allowed through at this time,” a tweet from Caltrans District 2 stated. “There is no estimated time on when the interstate will reopen.”

Evacuation orders were issued for a number of communities and camping places in the area, including Lakehead. For details go to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office here.

The Northern California Geographic Coordination Center described fire behavior yesterday as “extreme.” They report that “active fire behavior” continued overnight.

The Weather:  Sunny, hot weather reaching just under 100 degrees will complicate the situation for firefighters.

UPDATE 8:54 a.m.: Press release from Shasta Trinity National Forest:

The Salt Fire is approximately 2,800 acres and 0% contained. The fire remained active overnight, fire personnel worked at keeping the fire east of Interstate 5, putting line in along the highway on the southernmost point of the fire before the winds shifted. Firefighters also provided point structure protection for residences in the fire areas. There were a few spot fires along the west side of Interstate 5, firefighters took action and were able to contain the spot fires before they could get big. A type 1 incident management team has been ordered and are in route to the incident.

This is a rapidly evolving situation please stay in tune with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office and Cal Trans for any additional evacuations and changing road conditions or road closures.

UPDATE 12:45 p.m.: Caltrans has reopened I-5. But they say, “”The #3 lane on southbound I-5 is closed from Antlers Bridge to approximately 2 miles north of Gilman Road, due to the #SaltFire.”

I sure pray that the firefighters can get this big fire under control and contained as fast as possible. Hope people are not going to loose their homes. Wonder why they closed I-5 overnight, fire near the highway or smoke so thick the drivers could not see. Prayers to our hero firefighters. Without them we would burn in hell! Please be safe everyone.

The way this year is going so far, we might burn in hell anyway

They won’t get it under control.

It’s being managed by Forest Service, not CalFire. So they’ll just watch it burn all summer.

I’ve already wondered if their Northern fire line will ultimately be the Lava fire, ie, merging of the 2.

Unfortunately, you are exactly right. There needs to be some big changes in how national forests are managed and fires are controlled while we still have something of the west coast left.

I’m glad you can all give us this accurate information about how fires are fought by Cal Fire and USFS through all of your experience on the fireline, and not just sitting behind your keyboard in the AC throwing rotten tomatoes at firefighters who are actually working to put these fires out right now in hot, dry, windy weather….

If your not willing to loose lives, your not fighting fire, your managing fire.

Yes. It’s an industry.
After we had breakfast one morning, with a friend in the industry, our friend forgot who he was with when he saw thunderstorms over the Trinity Alps and called them “money makers”. (Oops he didn’t mean to let that slip out)
They don’t get paid to put them out.

The whole state will have been burnt over by the time we reach 2025.
No way we can stop these fires.
Just hope, pray and get your survival collectives together

Historically, the whole State does burn. Around LA the average frequency is 5-10 years, up to maybe 300 years in the wettest old growth. So that is to say, without intervention, on average, every square mile of Humboldt might have burnt at some point, at least once, within a 300 year time frame.

Now the evacuees in Weed and Mt. Shasta can only go North when escaping the Lava Fire.

Unfortunately my view shows a fair portion of the smoke from the Salt Fire is coming into Trinity right now. Hitting Oregon Mt, travelling West and slightly North.

Prepare for some smoky days ahead Trinitians.

The smoke has been pushing North, fortunately. Maybe we will get lucky

That’s not how transform faults work. It amazes me to this day that Curt Gentry’s novel has had so much influence in the popular imagination. At least this part of it. The rest of it is kind of cool, but no one remembers that.

Maybe the dump ass Governor should be working with fire officials both state and federal on fire suppression efforts instead of showboating for nothing other than the publicity on the Klamath.

I can’t find any info on any Republican Governors in CA out cutting fireline.
The last politician I can find putting in danger time or public, or military service in an emergency was Jimmy Carter, cleaning up at the NRX reactor accident(that I bet you never heard about) in Canada.

I didn’t say he needs to be on the fire line. I just figure someone caught by ABC news lying about spending billions of dollars on bogus prevention efforts should at least be trying to save face by actively coordinating suppression efforts. Truth be told, he doesn’t actually care that California is burning up. He cares about free publicity, which is why a canoe trip was his choice. He is such a pitiful example of humanity.

Well apparently your not up on your current events. The governor is trying to coordinate between Cal fire and US forestry. He has been up and down the coast talking about fire suppression. Whether you want to acknowledge it or not Newsome, has been behind Cal fire and fire suppression since the Paradise fire. Covid :Newsom , followed both CDC / Public health and State Public health office. Newsome did an excellent job on covid. His problem was not wearing a mask when others did. A good leader practices what he preaches. Everybody makes mistakes. If people had followed Newsomes original stay at home directive there wouldn’t have been upset business owners. The course of the disease in California would have been manageable if the young people followed directions. It was the young people who were told to stay home spring break, Memorial Day, and the 4 th. They didn’t follow directive and the covid went exponentially through the roof. To the turn of 3,000-4,000 covid deaths a day in the US. At one point there was 0.0 % icu beds in Southern California. However, even though we had the most cases in the nation our covid totals started to go down. People were wearing masks and getting their vaccinations. That is why our covid cases dropped. California has the most vaccinated. The republicans are doing this to get back at Newsome because he opposed trump and the right can’t deal with not being in control.. The republicans did this before and we got the terminator. Who put the state in 19 billion dollars in the red. It took a Democrat to bring back California in the black. ( Jerry Brown) The Democrats beat trump and republicans like red headed step children Democrats have the executive , and both legislative bodies. Why ? Because of trump. It is only going to get worse for trump and his followers. California is the largest and bluest in all 50 states. Republicans are getting there rocks off at the thought of destroying the beauty of California for business. Republicans will run California into the ground . Like they did before and the people who can least afford it will get screwed big time. The only people who will be happy are the trumpian republicans and the ultra right. They will make California a perfect shit hole. Run by a gender bender or a bottom dwelling lawyer from Chicago. Neither one of these clowns are native Californians. I’m thinking there is close to 40 million people in California. A couple million are the recall numb nuts. Leaving say 35 million. I would say a good share of people are tried of the Republican political antics. I say Newsome will survive the recall. If not, and one of the two republican bozos ( Cox, Jenner) win this native Californian will be packing up and leaving my birth place . Republicans don’t know how to govern. Everything they touch increases the probability of increasing the social economic divide for their constituents. All the services that help elevate a person in society the republicans are against. They don’t believe in science. They believe in religion developed by man . They believe in whatever suits their needs at the moment. After 68 yrs of republican bullshit I know them better than they know themselves. There were good republicans but, they are all dead now. The bunch that is in there now are looney fucking toons.
