Controversy Over Citizens Hogtying Black Suspect in Laytonville Armed Robbery Case

Some northern Mendocino County community members are celebrating after a man believed to be the last suspect in Saturday’s cannabis robbery near Laytonville, David Lee Edmonds, was apprehended by citizens yesterday afternoon and then taken into custody by Mendocino County Sheriff’s deputies.
Others are left uncomfortable with the image of the man hogtied in the dirt that appeared on social media. In the context of the current awareness of racial inequity, the image stirs a level of discomfort within several community members.
The photo posted on a local social media page and since removed has caused consternation. Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Lieutenant Quincy Cromer, “The person depicted in that image appears to be the suspect arrested yesterday according to our investigators. And I can confirm the suspect from yesterday was detained by residents / neighbors prior to the arrival of Sheriff’s Office personnel.”
When asked whether Edmonds was injured during the citizen’s arrest, Lieutenant Cromer said, “I am being told he was taken to the hospital for a medical clearance prior to being booked at the jail.”
Many comments on the initial post celebrated the citizen’s arrest saying, “Didn’t think it would take locals very long to get him! Way to go!”
Other commenters advocated for vigilante justice. One stated, “It would have been better if [he] was hanging by his neck. POS.”
However, another commenter said, “I find this image highly disturbing. I’m all for justice but this image is disturbing.” She added, “Detaining someone is one thing, berating them up and hog tying them is another. I’m very thankful that he is caught and I still feel uncomfortable with this image.
Edmond’s capture marked the end of a multi-agency law enforcement operation in response to armed men who held three adult males, an adult female, and a juvenile female at gunpoint for several hours on Saturday, September 19.
A press release from MCSO said the crimes began on September 17, 2020 when the armed men arrived at a rural property on the 49000 Block of North Highway 101 near Laytonville demanding money. The robbers discharged their firearm and left the property stealing approximately 20 pounds of marijuana stating they would return in two days.
The men came back on Saturday, September 19 and at least one more shot was fired. Law enforcement was informed and arrived in the area where they eventually arrested the following suspects:
Tyler Bagliere (28 year-old from San Jose, CA)
Louis Bagliere (73 year-old from San Jose, CA)
Lathiaro White (26 year-old from Oakland, CA)
Anthony Watson (30 year-old from San Jose, CA)
Christopher Stewert (30 year-old from San Jose, CA)
Deangelo Villalona (25 year-old from San Jose, CA)
But one suspect, believed to be David Edmonds was still thought to have eluded capture and to be in the area and armed and dangerous. Neighbors were concerned for their safety.
The apprehension of Edmonds is described in the following press release today from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:
On 9-20-2020 at approximately 12:45 P.M., a Sheriff’s Office deputy received information from citizens in the area of the 50400 block of North Highway 101 near Laytonville, CA. The deputy was informed that citizens in the area located and detained a black male adult fitting the description of the outstanding suspect from 9-19-2020 related to this robbery investigation. Deputies responded and detained the suspect.
Sheriff’s Office detectives responded and following additional investigation, the subject was identified as the outstanding wanted suspect from this ongoing investigation. The suspect was identified as David Lee Edmonds, a 50 year-old male from San Jose. Edmonds was taken to Howard Memorial Hospital for a medical clearance and later transported to the Mendocino County Jail where he was booked for 213(a)(1)(A) PC [Armed Robbery in Concert], 245 PC [Assault with a Deadly Weapon], 273a(a) PC [Felony Child Endangerment], 12022.1 PC [Armed During the Commission of a Felony].
Edmonds was subsequently booked into the Mendocino County Jail to be held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
There are no other outstanding suspects being sought in the Laytonville, CA area relating to this incident. Anyone with information related to this incident is requested to call the Sheriff’s Office Communications Center at 707-463-4086 or can remain anonymous by calling the WeTip system at 800-782-7463.

If you’re detaining an armed robber, tie them up however the fuck you want. That he wasn’t given the wade harris treatment, or “tripped and hit his head on a curb several times” before the police got there, means the people detaining him used a lot less force than the cops tend to use…

If the CHP had pulled him over on the Highway it would have been a “high risk felony stop” Meaning the man had a high risk of fight or flight and is currently wanted on a “violent felony warrant”; as this man was! The police would pull guns on the vehicle and call for backup before removing rhe suspect at gunpoint from the vehicle, this suspect hid out all night in a cabin and got caught up with the next day after holding men, women and children hostage with firearms.
He was apprehended by a community member and detained using lawful citizens arrest procedure which allows such.
Race plays no factor whatsoever in this citizens apprehension and arrest.

So it turns out that this story is not so black and white more a shade of gray (not the awful bondage movie that is just wrong) I’ve been arrested and in jail and let me say upfront being shackled with handcuffs and the ⛓️ down to your ankles. Second the storyline keeps on changing about the 73 year old man was a victim neither one nor the other is justification for hog tie a human being like roping a calf before branding. They could have just as easily put him in a ? and tied him up with the same result. Just because you are in the right doesn’t mean you have to give away your dignity by being so over the top the way we treat folks even if they are caught in the act reflects inner strength or lack of character.

Hands tied with handcuffs or hands tied with rope, no big difference considering the man was armed, wanted and desperate. Our rural properties are far from the help of police or sheriff who sometimes can take hours to reach rural properties in Northern Mendocino county, this mans next step would have been to find a vehicle to steal or another community member to rob to get back down south. What civil rights were violated? Look up PC 837 ie citizen arrest. In short citizens have the right to arrest people if they commit a crime. Citizens are also allowed to use what ever reasonable force is necessary to make the arrest up to and including lethal force. They just have to turn the criminal over to law enforcement as soon as is reasonably possible.
Criminals always cry foul when they are caught and scream they are innocent and they were abused etc. What about the civil rights of his victims? You don’t like the idea he was hog tied? Why, he threaded to kill several people so is deemed dangerous what are they supposed to do take his word he will play nice? Will they be sued? Probably but it does NOT mean they did anything wrong.

Do some reporting and go talk to the victims of this guy and ask them how terrified they were. Go interview victims of rape and assaults and ask them how it destroyed their lives. Talk to the family of victims that were killed ask them about the hole in their lives. Go talk to people that were permanently disabled due to being injured by people like this. Ride along in an ambulance or work in an Emergency Room and watch victims die and hear the screaming of their spouse or mother because they lost a loved one way to young. Look into the eyes of a child that just watched him parent die brutally beaten to death by a criminal. Then and only then come and tell me how this guys rights were violated.
I am not writing this out of anger or trolling it is a real suggestion. Perhaps you could get some victims to send you stories of the aftermath of what happens to them. You see the average person has no clue how brutal criminals really are.

People in the comments all gung-ho for citizens arrest when in reality an old man was looking to get his rightfully owned property back using his son & friends. I’m right there with you LegalLettuce on the story not making sense part. There is clearly a zero tolerance policy for thieves of any type in this industry so I can definitely make sense of the local apprehension of this person. He should absolutely not be free roaming these hills and hats off to the community members that found him and subdued him until law enforcement arrived. I personally do not feel that a photo needed to be put online and on social media, not to protect the thief, he deserves the punishment dealt, but because it’s glorifying the violence of it all. I’ve been robbed, and it was fucking terrifying. So this triggered me even more. But whatever they did to him before he was picked up didn’t even need to be discussed other than just letting their neighbors know it was handled. That dude is lucky to be alive and to be honest I’m surprised he made it out of that neighborhood bruised or not.
What I really want to know is HOW THE HELL is someone going to rob you once, tell you they will be back in two days, and then two days pass and there’s any remote possibility of them even coming close to your property? If someone took 20 pounds from me or anyone else on this mountain and told us they would be back in two days, and they actually came back – we would be ready however necessary to prevent the disruption of our livelihood. If this claim is valid, which it may or may not be obviously I don’t know – then you had two days to evacuate or arm yourself or leave or move all product or setup cameras or literally anything other than sit in your home and wait for them to return… I’m baffled at this. It’s my personal opinion that there is possibly a piece of information missing from this unfortunate event. So then they return in two days, just like they said they would, And start shooting guns towards your home, Why would one choose to have a young child at this location just days after receiving a threat and not only that but on the exact day they said they would return? I understand children grow up on farms, and it’s likely this child lived there or it was friends or family, but if there is a threat on my home I’m getting any youngins outta there stat. Thank goodness no one in the home was hurt.

I see this image and I think of a man who shot at ppl I love and a man who was armed and robbing people and took a 4 yr. old hostage and I want him to caught and I want justice. Others who look at this image and see a black man tied up, knowing what this man has done and instantly think its racist has some other agenda or problem. I can guarantee if this man was green he would have been treated the same way for what he did. I am so thankful this had a peaceful and safe for all outcome. Everyone involved are hero’s in my book.

A few years back, some young transient– maybe a trimmer, i can’t remember; a blonde-dreads type– was tripping his brains out and acting extremely bizarre at the parking lot of the Petrolia Store. I’ve been saying for a while, country justice is upon us. People are trying to come here to rob at harvest and folks are shooting back. HCSO isn’t going to be around fast enough to do more than put in a report, pick up spent bullet casings and a body or two. Folks are tired of all this effort to get rid or defund LEOs, regardless of how they choose to define it, and fighting back. Vigilatism is an ugly thing, but if that’s what’s left for defense, that’s what will vill the voids.

It’s nearly one in the morning and I’ve finally quit trying to get everything done. I was terse earlier because I had hopes I might finish my other work if I hurried and didn’t spend time in the comment section. Now I’m going to be terse because 7 is the latest I can sleep in.
We were trying to describe a controversy we saw playing out in comment sections of social media posts. We were not saying that stopping an alleged robber was racist. We were pointing out a social dynamic using just a few of the comments we saw that laid out the varying positions people held–from hey this guy was a robber who had to be stopped, to advocating more violence, to another commenter expressing discomfort with a black man being hogtied. We tried hard to present just the three positions as straightforwardly as possible choosing just one comment to represent each of the different points of view.
We didn’t for instance repeat more than one comment we saw on social media posts that were racist. We worked hard on trying to present the varying points of view and even sat on the story for quite some time after Matt finished it to make sure that we were comfortable that we had done the best we could.
We know we are not going to please everyone when tackling hard subjects like the intersection of race and crime but we tried to be fair.
Now I’m going to quit trying to explain myself when I know there isn’t a chance in heck that most people are even listening and I’m going to bed.
