A crash on Hwy 101 by the Indianola cutoff at approximately  5:10 p.m. has northbound traffic at a standstill. Both northbound lanes are blocked.

Four to five vehicles are involved, according to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page.

An ambulance is responding to the scene for one patient, a female with a head injury, according to the scanner. To make matters worse, traffic is backed up near Arcata with construction.

I drove by as they were finishing cleaning up. Looked like a car got rear-ended hard enough to cream the car in front of it too. I didn’t see what originally hit them. The two cars I saw looked like they were hit dead center in the rear. Guessing someone wasn’t paying any attention to the road and slammed into stopped or slowed vehicles.

Was through some the CalTrans stuff earlier in the day. Coming from the north just past the Arcata interchange… (at that end there is a 55 mph ‘construction’ speed limit).
Lane constricted down… a simple double lane to single lane, the traffic came to a DEAD STOP.

Guy a couple cars in front of me had to run off the road to avoid missing the car in front.
Gal behind me ‘lit em up’ trying to stop. (She was successful.)
Traffic came to a stop several times going through the area.
Nothing was happening other than being in a single lane.

In the Northbound direction… traffic was backed up from the people pulling the guardrails out at the Arcata Interchange (I dunno why they are doing that)… was backed up ran all the way down to Indianola.
(Where the collision occurred).

Caltrans has to maybe err… ‘re-think’ what they are doing. Massive screw up.
They are gonna end up with more injuries and maybe some fatalities.

Maybe put up some nice orange plastic fencing to protect… er something… against… er someone ?

Cal trans needs to stop wasting money on worthless projects or work at night.

They do in other areas – but we aren’t important enough. Look at highway 36 – how many years now? If a private firm was hired it would be done by now.

Maybe….Hwy 20 from Corvallis, Oregon to the Oregon coast took decades, all the 40 plus years I have lived here, and they had been plunking away before that. The last 10 miles of deadly curves was supposed to be finished in 2009, it was finished in 2017 (now 5 miles). Private companies.

Diane, the construction on 36 is being done by a private contractor.

You’re funny. That is a federal project being built by, per usual, private sector contractors.

All the rubbernecks were watching the 10 “workers”on the ground supervising the crane operator. Caltrans needs a good audit and see how much money is wasted. Eliminate the gas tax for starters.

They could for sure lose the guy who stands 2 miles from the construction with a sign that says “slow “….

We joke that he’s the Walmart greeter of the construction zone.

Just drove by again counted 12 workers standing around doing nothing. At least the guardrail crew looks like they’re working but that’s not caltrans they’re subcontracted I’m sure

ALREADY a sign posted left lane closed ahead, ALREADY a sign posted, 50 MPH and some folks just dont pay attention. I was Northbound this morning and a tailgater was on my , I was going the posted 50 MPH speed limit.

Lately I have noticed a significant percentage of drivers blasting through the “safety corridor” at speeds much higher than 55mph. Come on CHP start ticketing!

Getting tailgated while going 60 is now common….

That’s because it’s a 65mph (or higher – it’d be 70 or 75 in some states) stretch of road, and people drive based on road conditions, not on signs.

The fact that it is 50 MPH is ridiculous and simply an excuse to give tickets. Speed doesn’t kill. Idiot drivers kill. The autobahn is a prime example, as well as this case. Get the hell over to the right if you’re going to go 47 in a 50.
