[UPDATE: HOMICIDE] One Person With Gunshot Wound to Chest After Armed Robbery at Gas Station in Blue Lake

At approximately 9:45 p.m., a dispatcher sent law enforcement and medical personnel to the 200 block of Blue Lake Blvd after an armed robbery resulted in one person receiving a gunshot wound, according to scanner traffic. The dispatcher reported that CPR is in progress as of 9:55 p.m
The suspect, a white male adult, fled the scene possibly in a white pickup, according to the scanner.
UPDATE 10:11 p.m.: One first responder told the dispatcher, “One confirmed 1144.” That is code for deceased. The first responder clarified that the person who died was a victim not a suspect.
The dispatcher confirmed that the person was pronounced deceased at 10:08 p.m.
UPDATE 10:14 p.m.: Blue Lake Blvd is closed, according Mark Nelson V who is a resident of the area.
UPDATE 11:06 p.m.: Nazy Javid of North Coast News spoke to the owner of the business and he said his employees were uninjured.
UPDATE 11:25 p.m.: The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department tweeted, “Deputies are investigating a reported armed robbery in which one person was fatally shot at a business on the 200 block of Blue Lake Blvd. Deputies received the call at about 9:45 p.m. and remain on scene investigating. Blue Lake Blvd has been closed to traffic.”
They followed this with a second tweet, “No suspect information is available at this time. More information will be released when available and appropriate.”
This same gas station was the victim of another armed robbery on June 14. They were also a victim of an armed robbery last September.
UPDATE 11:47 p.m.: The Coroner has arrived at the crime scene.

So when a criminal robs or does something against the law there is no consequences for their actions, but someone holding them accountable their crimes is now the criminal. I believe that they were stopping people who might match the suspect’s description.
I spoke with the person who was first on the scene, along with one other person, and they tried to keep the victim alive until first responders got there. When the police showed up, they held them at gunpoint until they determined they weren’t involved. He said the man who died was the one who robbed the gas station and was subsequently shot by a currently unidentified person. Not sure if it was the employee who shot him or somebody else. Or if there was more than one suspect or not. Nazy was streaming a live video on the scene and spoke with the owner of the gas station who said that he received a text msg from the employee who was working and that he is OK, but they do not know where he is. His vehicle is still at the gas station. Guess we will know more tmrw.

No Wilbur, like I said, it was the robber who was shot and killed. The cashier, who was apparently a convicted felon in possession of a stolen firearm, shot and killed him as he was leaving. He has been arrested for murder. Don’t go around accusing people of being liars when you don’t even know what happened. That’s the very definition of a troll.

While the cashier is safe, thankfully, that doesn’t mean it was the suspect that was shot. A customer may well be the victim.
Hi Angela. Yeah, I understood that as well. Which is why I asked one of the people who was first on the scene and initially detained by police if it was an innocent bystander who was shot or a suspect. He said it was the man who robbed the place. The “suspect, white male, fled the scene in a white pickup” was not part of any official statement either. However, the Humboldt County Sherriff’s Dept does say they have a suspect in custody and are working to identify the deceased. What that means exactly, I dont know. Maybe they’re one and the same, maybe they’re not. They said they’d give another update later today.

Unfortunately it sounds like the whole story is unknown. People first on the scene, who are not trained are also in a state of distress and not always aware of all the fine details, especially if they were focused on trying to save someone. Unfortunate all the way around

Agreed. During an on camera interview last night, the owner of that gas station said he always tells his cashiers to just hand over the money and let the person(s) leave, and that the police can do their job after the fact.
The Humboldt County Arrest List shows a Mark Anthony Nelson arrested for a 187 (murder) on 7/3. I believe this is the suspect.

The person providing the photos is Mark Nelson V. The person arrested is Mark Anthony Nelson Jr. Seems possible it’s a relative and not just the same person.

The robber was shot and killed by the gas station employee (Mark) who returned to the scene after he had initially fled, and shot the robber as he was attempting to leave. The story has been released.
