Is it National Public Health Week or is it Medical Laboratory Professional’s Week? I suppose it doesn’t really matter one way or the other, except it does. Medical laboratories across the country are busy with their testing. They continue to put themselves on the front lines, conducting tests, and they deserve our respect. Our politicians are fighting amongst themselves about how far to push people and their personal freedoms while our national public health continues to suffer. The politicians are dangling money in front of the noses of hospitals everywhere, and attempting to restructure government in their own image, which unfortunately, is not the same image many of us have.
Doctors, nurses, and medical technicians are working hard these days, and they deserve our respect. If you can’t restrain your anger, direct it towards your politician. As former Obama White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said during the 2008 financial crisis, “Never let a crisis go to waste”.
Take back your freedom. You deserve it. You’ve sacrificed for us older folks and the curve has flattened. We know how to socially distance ourselves, and now it’s time to get back to work.
Thanks to all of you.
where’s Jo Wattle ?
Every year, patients and healthcare employers will fail to notice that lab week was happening, until it is over. In the 40-some years of my career in the lab, I never got a single “happy lab week” out of anyone who wasn’t trying to sell me something!
I am here today to tell you, that the first thing you learn about working in the lab, is, it doesn’t pay shit!
In this country, most of our Medical Technologists are older folks, and, when we retire, the only replacements tend to come from other countries!
Yes, there is a nationwide shortage of Clinical Laboratory Scientists! Why? Because of the terrible salary!
So, if you want to thank us, and you don’t have to, since it’s a steady job, and since we are happy to spend our careers providing your physician with the necessary information that he or she requires, to treat your condition! And, since a physician mostly won’t touch your case until he gets the lab results, you probably should think about saying thanks!
So, to the folks working in the labs, everywhere, hang in there, you, are awesome!
To everyone else, by all means, thank a lab tech for their service.
But: If they really want to thank us, give us a large raise! Nobody else in the building can do what we do, because they don’t know how…
