Weitchpec Man Still Missing: Family Received a Ransom Note and Tracker Found Possible Evidence Indicating Foul Play

virgil Bussell, Jr.Virgil Bussell Junior, a 52-year-old Hoopa man, was reported missing over two weeks ago when his family found his truck abandoned on rural Deerhorn Road outside Weitchpec, California. Since this discovery, Humboldt County Sheriffs have employed Search and Rescue to find Bussell’s whereabouts. Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Activist Jesse Armstrong volunteered to assist Bussel’s family in their search for their loved one. Northern California tracker Kevern Hodgin was recruited to scour the site that the truck was discovered to determine what could have happened to Bussell before he disappeared.

As of today, Bussell has yet to be found.

Initially, Bussell’s daughter Alicia Adueno grew concerned because as she said, “It had been roughly about three weeks since he’d been to my house so I kind of had a feeling that something wasn’t right because he always comes to my house.” Virgil’s twin sister posted on social media inquiring if anyone had seen her brother and someone commented they had seen his vehicle on Deerhorn road, explained Audelo.

Photo of where the pickup truck was found.

On March 25, Virgil’s family found the vehicle “parked at an incline with a full load of wood in it, the windows were rolled down, his keys were in there, and the jacket that he always wears was in on the passenger side seat, ” Audelo recounted.

In the preceding days, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office conducted a two-day ground search partnering with the Sheriff’s Special Services Unit, the Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Posse and the Hoopa Volunteer Fire Department to comb the densely vegetated area where the truck was located. According to HCSO’s Public Information Officer Samantha Kargas, based on these efforts investigators “have yet to determine whether a crime has been committed.” She added, “We are still investigating whether or not foul play was involved or he left on his own.”

According to Bussell’s daughter Alicia Audelo, after these initial search efforts, “We haven’t had any law enforcement help with searching since.”

Screenshot from Alicia Audelo’s phone

Since going public with her father’s disappearance, Alicia Audelo was contacted by an anonymous individual demanding a ransom for the return of her father. Via text message, the anonymous individual claimed to be a “fugitive, human trafficker, drug trafficker”  who was holding Bussell. The individual demanded $7,000. If the demands were not met, the individual threatened, “I WILL [kill] HIM AND DROP HIS LIFELESS BODY OFF THE ROAD”. Audelo believes the author of the ransom texts “was some sick person that was trying to scam me to get [money] but the local sheriff’s office didn’t even read them and at least try to assure me that they could try and trace to find this person.”

To incentivize members of the public to come forward and offer information about her father’s whereabouts, Audelo has created a GoFundMe to raise money for a reward. The GoFundMe’s description says the funds will go towards reward money and funding search efforts including hiring a professional tracker and helicopter search services.

Saying that they’ve been left without support from law enforcement, the family has been collaborating with Humboldt County local Jesse Armstrong to assist in determining the fate of Bussell. Armstrong describes himself as “a missing and murdered indigenous women and men’s activist” who hopes to “shake things up” in communities prone to silence by assisting families in finding answers. Armstrong said that the  community’s extreme reluctance to relinquish information about Bussell’s disappearance was exemplified for him when he found a purposefully placed message of intimidation on Deerhorn Road–“a fake human skull in the middle of the road.”

Virgil Bussell JuniorArmstrong traveled to the site where Bussell’s truck was found and located a grove of fallen trees where he believes Bussell cut wood. He says the wood there is the same type of wood found in the bed of Bussell’s truck.

According to Armstrong, conversations around the Weitchpec community suggest three to four suspects are involved with Bussell’s disappearance. He said that the suspects are drug addicts who might have grown aggressive when they found Bussell cutting wood off of Deerhorn Road.

Armstrong recruited Kevern Hodgin, a Northern California tracker who has helped families find loved ones, to analyze the site where the truck disappeared. According to Armstrong, Hodgin saw signs of a physical struggle near the grove where Bussell was believed to have been felling trees and parallel drag marks from there indicating a body was dragged. The tracker reports being able to track the drag marks to the home of a person the family considers a suspect. Based on these findings, Bussell’s family is fearing the worst.

His daughter Alicia Audelo said she fears “that my Dad was murdered and his body was hidden.”

HCSO has yet to assign a lead detective to the case. Kargas explained, “The case is in our criminal investigations division. There’s not a lead detective on it just yet, our lieutenant is working on it and is going to be assigning someone. He is doing a review over the initial investigative work that’s been happening.”

Kargas discussed some of the impediments investigating Bussell’s disappearance: “The difficult part about this case is the timeline is so long ago…[i]n terms of being able to find somebody in a search and rescue situation. No one had heard from Mr. Bussell in about 1 to 3 weeks. We’ve heard varying stories about people thinking they had seen him. We don’t even have the last known location for him. That definitely makes the case difficult…however it doesn’t make the case cold. We are definitely still investigating. We need the community’s help to let us know if they’ve seen him or if they have any information regarding his whereabouts.”

Virgil Owen Bussell Jr

Virgil Owen Bussell Jr

Virigl Bussell Jr. is a Native American male, 5 feet 8 inches tall, approximately 180 pounds, with black hair, a beard and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and work boots.

Bussell Jr.’s daughter Alicia Audelo said her father often goes by “Uppity” or “Buscat”. She also provided some of her father’s notable physical characteristics: “He has tribal tattoos on his arms and on his chest, he is graying on his face and on his head. On his right upper arm he has “BUSCAT” tattooed and a noticeable lump on his forehead.”

HCSO’s Samantha Karges asks that “anyone with information regarding Bussell Jr.’s whereabouts should contact the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at 707-445-7251 or the Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip line at 707-268-2539.”

No that’s not the way it’s pronounced. Locals say it ‘witch-pec’ if you say ‘witch-a-pec’ it’s a sure sign you aren’t local. Just telling you because I know you are local, Laura. 🙂

Thank you, i appreciate this, Willow Creeker, and am just ducking in quick with this comment because of not wanting to distract from the important point of this post, but… there’s no way i can say Witch-pec without a tiny space between the syllables, which, if i were being generous with the original faulty spelling here, would come out as “Witch-(quick little sound-thing that seems like ‘uh’)-pec”… but i will be sure not to say, Witch-aahh-pec.

Seems weird for the would be ransomers to ask for 7,000 bucks, but leave his roughly $7,000 truck there.
“do you think I am here for all this rubbish?” is a pretty peculiar way of talking. Thats probably the only person in Humboldt that uses the word “Rubbish”. Similar to Robert Durst’s use of “cadaver”.

Good luck with that. The Sheriff stated clearly response times and quicker now that we are all sheltered in place. It sounds like this particular case isn’t a priority to anyone. Nothing unusual under the current Sheriff. As long as he can go to his happy home at the end of the day, the lack of his staff actually doing anything is no big deal and likely encouraged.

Alf, have you ever turned out to search for someone in the woods? I have, spent days looking for someone who was found in a motel down the road, or at a friend’s house, or not found at all. People go out to cut wood or pick mushrooms, and never come back. It happens. Your political opinions have nothing to do with the situation at hand.

As a matter of fact yes I have. I have volunteered for almost 20 years. Multiple finds from alive and well to suicide. Unfortunately, the current Sheriff doesn’t consider volunteers to be very important. He waits until the last minute every time. He has no deputies currently trained in search. This is not political at all. He’s in over his head and is incompetent.

[edit] The reason it’s so poverty stricken is because its resembles and is basically a concentration camp like Hitler built. Plus u try to get, keep, and hold down a job when the closest town is willow creek and so on. If you were poor with nothing to look forward to you would probably also pick up bad habits of your own to cope with the stress and depression.

I don’t disagree with what you wrote, I just wanted to point out the entire concept of concentration camps was invented by the British to break the Boers in Africa. Hitler later adapted the concept.

Can you read it? I don’t want to break my own rule but…I find it hard to beat my head against the…er…quality of the writing…and lack of understanding displayed in the comment enough to try and figure out if the comment is indeed racist. In the end, I figured that the rant probably said everything that needed to be said about the quality of the thinking behind the comment and anyone who was sensible was only reinforced in their ideas of the intelligence of racists.

Let us say that it is…Could there be a certain…dark humor at looking at the quality of the writing? (for instance: “And for that sheriff from hoopa your not that big shot off T.V you can’t even speak write”)

It’s possible that I unfairly indulged my sense of humor here…If I get too much push back, I guess I’ll have to follow the rules. But should anyone else want to just revel in the irony for a bit longer, I’ll just pretend I’m not seeing the post.

Good Luck. Sounds exactly how our case over here in Pit River is being handled . The canine tracker businesses wouldn’t even help unless authorized /asked by the police. They wait till so much time has passed and there’s nothing to trace/track. And always remember people that if you file an adult as a missing person they will not recognize it because they are adults. File as missing and at risk . That’s the only way to get their attention apparently. No matter how much evidence they have pointing to foul play the police will not respond. It’s just my opinion watching what’s going on with the Nick Patterson case we ha e going which has been missing since January 5,2020.

it is always so ridiculous, comical, and blatantly idiotic to me when people say sh#& like “there is trash flowing in the river, on the river banks…everywhere…”
in Hoopa. I have lived here all of my life. I do see people pollute. I also see people not from this area leave our campground littered.
i work near the river. i see it every day in fact. i see nothing except beauty; ducks in lines going against the current, cranes, hawks, once in a rare while an eagle; I even see otters. Fish are fewer, but I know theyre there.
Citing bias vitriol just because we reside on a reservation speaks more to the contamination of a person’s soul and dirtiness of their spirit.
And newsflash, even if my homeland was some wasteland, it isnt the first to ever have been established.
“Outsiders” must lead by example before criticizing anyone else.

that conspiracy hoopa guy is a fool, I see way more pollution up hwy 36 from the growers than driving thru hoopa. many people here respect the native community, too bad that conspiracy hoopa doesn’t understand what happens when you oppress and traumatize a whole community through decades of violence. forget the sheriff, they told me when our neighbors were coming over and stealing from us, harrassing us, assaulting us, that we were on our own. they have shown me since then that they meant it. every time ive called them for help they speak to you in dispatch like you are annoying them and no one ever shows up. just like the time I called about the aggressive transient in a van who charged me and my kids at our rural bus stop and was camping there for 3 days…he was scary i made him move not the sheriff. he only moved down to the next bus stop though. im sure the sheriff doesn’t care about us out here…

Kev is my father. He’s a white boy that tracks like a Native. He’s one of best. He’s been tracking for 60 years. He’s been a diver searching for bodies, as well. He still a sucessful diver for lost articles, no longer bodies, but he would. If LEO isn’t listening they should be. My father is a damn good tracker, and has a sixth sense or he wouldn’t have been so successful in rivers, oceans, and lakes, as well as land. If he had told LEO to f* off and went on his own he’d been able to save a few lives, but he’s not the a*h* he should be when in comes to law enforcement. Joel Hardin could come in a be a tracker and LEO would get all ass hurt and not listen. Notice I don’t use the words all, always, every, never, none, there is going to those those in every group that exceed at what they do, my daddy happens to be one of those. I’m not even willing to tell him I can’t find my own tracks in the sand.

Also we don’t burn our trash, well some do, they find themselves with a nice looking ticket with a fine for violating TEPA guidelines. Stay humble 🙏
