The California Legislature passed Senate Bill 74 to address the growing number of homeless and housing insecure students in California. Subsequent to the enactment of the bill, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office solicited interest from California Community Colleges to participate in a College Homeless and Housing Insecure Pilot Program. College of the Redwoods submitted a request to participate in the pilot.
CR was one of the fourteen community colleges included in the pilot program. The college will receive $500,000 annually over a three-year period to implement a sustainable program to support their homeless and housing insecure students.
“I want to thank Dr. Kintay Johnson and Mr. Marty Coelho for leading CR’s effort to support our homeless and housing insecure students. I also want to thank our community for raising funds for the Redwoods Room and Board Scholarship,” said CR President Keith Flamer. Some of CR’s efforts to combat housing insecurity to date have been the Redwoods Room and Board Scholarship Fund, The Food Pantry, and the off campus Housing Liaison.
CR will submit a plan on how they are going to use these funds to the Chancellor’s Office by May 15, 2020.
