Answering Questions About Covid-19 (AKA the Coronavirus) in Humboldt County

covid-19 coronavirusPress release from the Department of Health and Human Services:

The Department of Health & Human Services Public Health Branch recently announced the first confirmed case of novel coronavirus in Humboldt County. The ill individual and close contact continue to do well and are self-isolating at home while being monitored for symptoms by the Public Health Communicable Disease Surveillance and Control Unit.

There have been many questions asked in the past 24 hours about isolation, quarantine, symptoms and risk. We hope the information below is helpful.

What does “isolation” mean? When individuals show signs and symptoms of illness, or test positive for COVID-19, but do not require hospital care, they are placed on home-isolation. They monitor their temperature twice daily and also monitor for symptoms. Public Health is in contact with these individuals at least once a day. Home-isolated individuals are instructed to contact Public Health or their health care provider if they have any worsening of their symptoms before accessing medical care so that they can be managed safely in the health care setting. While in isolation, they are able to leave their home only for medical care.

What does “quarantine” mean? When individuals are not currently symptomatic, but have risk factors for developing COVID-19 (such as travel to China or close contact with a confirmed case), Public Health works with the California Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and determines the appropriate level of monitoring for their level of risk. All individuals monitor for fever and other symptoms. If they develop either, they contact Public Health or their medical provider before accessing care so that they may be safely managed in the health care setting.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19? As with many other respiratory viruses, including influenza, the symptoms of COVID-19 infection are:

  • Fever (100.4 F or higher)
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath.

Public Health wants you to know:

  • Community members are being contacted if they are a close contact of a confirmed case
  • The ill individuals have not been circulating in our community while infectious
  • According to CDC, there is currently no evidence of community-level transmission occurring in the U.S. This means that only individuals who have traveled to China or have been close contacts of a confirmed case are at higher risk of illness. These individuals are then being monitored by Public Health.

For more information about COVID-19, please call Public Health during normal business hours at 707-445-6200, or visit Humboldt Health Alert at www.humboldtgov.org/HumboldtHealthAlert.

I appreciate that bat shit craziness being published, it helps with my science fiction writing.

Just wish I could see the IP addresses, because I’m betting most of this awesome stuff is coming from one or two people using dozens of aliases.

Keep it coming please!!

Kelley, I agree, this one is unique, can sneak up on a population because , apparently, the patient just thinks they have a bad cold until the fever goes up and beyond 104 ! Apparently this goes on for two weeks of possible exposure because the patient doesn’t know they have it. The response from the health community is cobbled by lack of testing kits, and a slow response from the CDC to local health folks , requiring actual permission to send the CDC a possible sample (how does it get there, are shippers being put at risk ? ) Data is being hidden as to where the virus actually is, a good example of that is found here https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html?fbclid=IwAR1HOSDJjP6KmVQEdtzAZjROpoW607T64HCanUsFo0ntb6joaRvtnjKdQZM#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6 , the Johns Hopkins map, where one day, just after the Princess Cruise ship patients were brought to unknowingly to the U.S. (discovered on the plane) , the patients were located BY Johns Hopkins in Kansas, but were told to remove that with a denial by Kansas State Health Department. Those patients just disappeared into the system ! They are in the U.S. but where ?

yes, this illness is going to become endemic to our population. the research is still evolving, but it looks like it will have a fatality rate somewhere around 2% which is 2,000 times higher than the flu. if 10,000 people died of the flu last year, 200,000 could die if the same number of people become infected with the virus.

and further, there will be more and more of these viruses emerging as the average temperature climbs. first because viruses do better in hot humid conditions. second because all kinds of “germs” are being defrosted as the ice melts.

so this is a test of our response system. so far, we are really not doing too well.

Curious about the logistics of this military request;

How much authority should the military have? Say a family dog that might be infected leaves the yard, do the Military shoot to kill?

How long should this 24 hour surveillance be kept in effect for, 2 weeks or more?

How many troops per residence?
Can they sit down on the job?

How large is the perimeter?

Let’s say they live in an apartment complex, how does that scenerio work?

All I am trying to say, is take them to TRAVIS AIRFORCE BASE for quarantine. Unless they are intentionally trying to risk infecting the entire local population! There are some things you don’t take risks on, this is one, unless it is done on purpose! We need some serious answers from our reps! And the apartment complex scenario is ALL QUARANTINED. I have never met anybody who would like to die from organ failure!

Would it not be smart, since there is only 34 cases in the U.S. , from a population of 350 million (less than .00001%) to hold those people in evaluation, especially since the origins of the problem come from a corrupt criminal government , able to lie and falsify data? You tell me? Why are their factories closed? Why are there streets baron? WHY HAS THEIR MILITARY WELDED THE WINDOWS AND DOORS OF INFECTED FAMILIES HOMES SHUT?

The BSL-4 lab located in the epicenter of wuhan China was actually studying the SARS virus ! this nature article was published in feb 2017 . Article also notes the Chinese do not have a good record on containing SARS in labs .Odd coincidence.

https://www.nature.com/news/inside-the-chinese-lab-poised-to-study-world-s-most-dangerous-pathogens-1.21487

“Future plans include studying the pathogen that causes SARS, which also doesn’t require a BSL-4 lab, before moving on to Ebola and the West African Lassa virus, which do. Some one million Chinese people work in Africa; the country needs to be ready for any eventuality, says Yuan. “Viruses don’t know borders.” “

But worries surround the Chinese lab, too. The SARS virus has escaped from high-level containment facilities in Beijing multiple times, notes Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey. Tim Trevan, founder of CHROME Biosafety and Biosecurity Consulting in Damascus, Maryland, says that an open culture is important to keeping BSL-4 labs safe, and he questions how easy this will be in China, where society emphasizes hierarchy. “Diversity of viewpoint, flat structures where everyone feels free to speak up and openness of information are important,” he says.

See today’s article in the New York Post. https://nypost.com/2020/02/22/dont-buy-chinas-story-the-coronavirus-may-have-leaked-from-a-lab/ There are even charges that the researchers at the Institute (the Level Four Biolab) sold research animals to the “wet market” that was handily positioned only a few hundred yards away. From the level of response that China has made to the outbreak, and their lack of transparency all along, I for one have believed from the first that the “bat soup” story was bogus, or, yeah, it was bat soup alright, that came from a bat from the biolab. They were warned to step up their security in 2017. Captain Tripps happens, folks.

Which corrupt, criminal government? The United States? Or China?

SARS-CoV-2 may have escaped from the Wuhan Institute, but, per Dr. Francis Boyle, it may very well have originated from the University of North Carolina initially.

How did Travis Airforce Base get it’s name? General Travis was killed in a wreck involving a B-29, or something that caught fire , and dropped a nuke on the tarmac. I can’t remember if it caused a fizzle (incomplete “dirty bomb” style reaction), or remained intact. It’s described in the book ‘Command and Control’ by Eric Schlosser. The book chronicles the 1,800 or so nuclear close calls we had, and the dozen or so serious accidents you probably never heard about.

A stupid proposal “saves” a net of $0.8 billion while increasing the government bureaucracy by $1.8 billion. Most of the “savings” come from people unable to complete the process. This is deliberate bad government policy, designed by vile fools who make inhumane policies in order to prove that government doesn’t work.

“To save money, the federal government would spend an estimated $1.8 billion over 10 years by having millions of cases reviewed more often. That move might save $2.6 billion over the same period, but advocates say it targets largely poorly educated people, many coping with housing troubles and often with intellectual or physical difficulties.”

https://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2020/01/25/opinion/disability-rules-proposed-change-to-social-security-plan-has-high-cost/

One party deliberately sabotages government and lines the rich’s pockets. While the other party lines the pockets of the rich while it builds government policies and answers that don’t work; they have too much faith in government action.
Could we have some real conservatives and some intelligent liberals?

Most small county “public health officers” are as ignorant in dealing with something like this as Joe Blow. The M.D. and/or Ph.D. doesn’t mean squat…neither the adequate training and especially not the experience. Every next step requires a phone call to Atlanta. And the boys & girls at CDC couldn’t even help run the Corona Princess cruise ship “quarantine”/evacu-contamination properly!

The potential is for a pandemic to emerge. The death rate for influenza is I think around 0.1 while the death rate for this new strain of coronavirus is around 2.0. If the virus proves highly infectious then the potential for high mortality is real.

on edit….the other serious concern and difference with the flu is that the strains of flu we get are the same each year more or less and we build up defenses. This is a new strain of virus that the human race has no immunity to. It all depends on how infectious it becomes. If it mutates into something that is easy to spread and it goes around the world as it is starting to do now then it could be serious trouble.

This fails miserably to answer the questions that many of us might have. SUCH AS:

When did these two people get back to China and how long before they went to the hospital. Where the hell were they in between. Were they wearing masks the entire time? What kind of masks? N95?

When they got to the hospital was everyone there wearing a mask? Let’s assume the Eureka Hospital staff was flawless… Who the fuck decided it was OK to send them home to “Self Quarantine” ? Are they the only people in the United States to be allowed to “self quarantine”? Because it sure seems like it based on the news. Why is everyone else in a very secure and sensitive hospital room? How has “self quarantining” been working out in China?

How did they get home? Did they just so happen to have 14 days of groceries? Or did they have to stop? What if they forgot something? What if I am canvasing for my good friend Bernie the Commie and go up to the door? Is there somebody standing guard? IS there a sign? Do they have a cat? Is anyone watching them to make sure they don’t go down the block out of boredom in a few days?

People deserve more answers. IT IS SOME SERIOUS BULLSHIT THAT WE DON’T KNOW MORE!

Yes, presuming the average American household has only 3 days or less of food and other supplies, how are they to stay in self-isolation for 14 days or more? Does the DHHS coordinate to have supplies delivered, say to a drop box in the yard, to be retrieved by the patient? Is the property signed with warning quarantine signs? Why not let the public in on these procedures, or are there actually no procedures in place?

You are saying things some of us cannot even come up with. I have to say I agree with you. The virus doesn’t care obviously who it infects. I fear for my 90 year old mother and all the other elders in this county along with young children and others who may be immunocompromised.

I also can’t believe people are even considering travel to Asia, but my own brother apparently left for Vietnam last Friday for 2 weeks with his new lady friend. He is of the “it’s just the flu” camp. He also owns a busy medical practice and his lady friend is a kindergarten teacher. I sure hope they get quarantined when they get back (they don’t live in Humboldt).

CDC estimates that so far this season there have been at least 29 million flu illnesses, 280,000 hospitalizations and 16,000 deaths from flu. Interim estimates of 2019-2020 flu vaccine effectiveness were released this week.

We’ve dealt with the flu for millennia. Its death rate is a fraction of a percent. SARS-CoV-2 is brand new, possibly REALLY new (cough…engineered…cough). It has a death rate of at least 2%. Carriers show no symptoms, “recoverees” acquire no immunity…it spreads like wildfire.

If we end up seeing 29 million SARS-CoV-2 infections in America, the death toll will be 580,000+.

We are hunkering down at home. We keep small bottles of rubbing alcohol in the car and whenever we go to town if we touch anything, we wipe our hands with an alcohol soaked cloth. Not going to socialize in town until this is over.

It seems pretty likely that these people spread the virus in the US after landing at the airport. Protect yourselves!

Joe Mota, (and everybody) – Just FYI, alcohol-based hand sanitizer and sanitizer wipes actually work better than straight alcohol, something to do with the water helping with absorbency. Wipe gas pumps before pumping gas, wipe your hands and the steering wheel. Wipe whenever you handle cash and currency (very important). Stock up, buy your masks and gloves, hit the Vitamin C and zinc hard. “Prepare for the worst and hope for the best”. If nothing else, you probably won’t get the flu this year.

Alex gets a little carried away, and a generous grain of salt is recommended.

But…the fact is, tons of stuff he has told us over the years was called a “conspiracy theory”, and he was mocked by the mainstream talking heads.

But… Tons of that stuff turns out true, accepted by mainstream news true. Alex has been first with the truth many times.

Remember all the conspiracy nuts claiming the government is listening and recording everything. Now we all know it’s true, we all know there is a huge facility in Utah dedicated to recording everything. Just one of many examples of the ” conspiracy theories” mocked by the mainstream, when in fact it’s true.

You linked to Mike Adams bullshitting how this is a “bio weapon” that was “engineered”.

The paper he links to does not support that conclusion!

All he takes from the report to make his conclusion is that the virus spreads “effeciently” and that the complete lineage of the virus is unknown still.

So, yes. You would find better information on Sesame St. than Natural News.

Or just read the PDF and dont pass out skittles telling people that they’re M&Ms.

Travis Air Force Base is close to Sacramento where the quarantined American residents of Wuhan are being held. Did one of these detainees escape again and reach Sacra and spread the word of “death”??? Or did an Airman from Travis become infected and he lives in Sacramento?

We need not fear the qurantinees at Travis and other bases across the country (15 in total right now).

We do need to fear the carriers who show no symptoms while spreading this crap around like wildfire. No one in their right mind believes the Red Chinese numbers about infections and deaths…the ultra-rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 in Korea, Iran, Italy, and elsewhere demonstrates such numbers are complete fantasy.

In our modern society, NO PLACE is safe from a pandemic like this. Even had transportation been completely stopped in December or early January, the infection was going to spread, just not as fast as it has. In a world where FedEx overnight around the world is available for packages…dangerous pathogens can travel almost as fast.

The CORRECT name of the VIRUS itself is SARS-CoV-2.

COVID-19 is the name of the DISEASE that the virus causes.

Just like HIV is to AIDS.

Some are suggesting it’s a weaponized combination of HIV and Sars.

Dr. Boyle: 10 February 2020. And it’s a long title, but it starts out “The spike glycoprotein coronavirus contains a furin-like cleavage site absent in CoV of the same clade.”

Alex: So that’s exactly what the prestigious Indian Institute said is that it has the points where the artificial RNA was injected, I mean, they can see right where it happened.

Dr. Boyle: Right. But this was a genetic– as you know, that was withdrawn under political pressure. But now we have four very distinguished life scientists here. Yes, that’s it right there. And the smoking gun here is on page 11, near the bottom, the last full paragraph from the bottom where it says, “may provide a gain of function to coronavirus for efficient spreading in the human population—

While it may be true that there is no evidence of community-level transmission, it would not be detected if the medical establishment only tests people known to have symptoms (and come forward) or are in close proximity to someone known to have tested positive for the virus due to having symptoms. Those people who have it but think it is just a cold are going to continue to spread it by interacting with the public. Obviously it’s the same for those who don’t have symptoms.

It seems that Humboldt’s Covid19 virus patient came here from the Diamond Princess. Now I know most of Humboldt’s population don’t like Fox News, but if this story isn’t in your regular go to news site perhaps you should take a look. Note that these 14 infected patients were only found to be infected when they were on the bus and already off the ship. Seems they should have remained onboard the DP until the test results came back.

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-furious-americans-infected-with-coronavirus-flew-back-in-u-s-without-his-permission-report

My memory is that news sites reported that even after people were quarantined for two weeks on the ship they would face an additional two weeks when they returned to the states. This doesn’t seem to be happening.

I prefer CBC news. “Globally, we will not be able to contain the spread of this virus. We can slow it down, but we can’t stop it,” said Dr. Allison McGeer, an infectious diseases specialist at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital who worked on the front lines of the SARS epidemic in 2003.” https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/coronavirus-covid-19-iran-bc-south-korea-1.5472316

They have good coverage without the hyper political agenda of American news. I doubt whether this disease can be contained (for the reasons you mentioned among others) but slowing it down can give people time to prepare.

Call the virus SARS-CoV-2 if you like; I believe the WHO already changed the name, but Mr. Keller may be right. With another bird flu discovered in China, and hundreds of corona viruses discovered in bat populations world wide it gets somewhat confusing, but most of us are commenting on the virus/disease that has infected over 70,000 people to date.

It has indeed traveled to Sacto;

snip from

https://nypost.com/2020/02/22/dont-buy-chinas-story-the-coronavirus-may-have-leaked-from-a-lab/

Does that suggest to you that the novel coronavirus, now known as SARS-CoV-2, may have escaped from that very lab, and that Gen. Chen’s job is to try and put the genie back in the bottle, as it were? It does to me.

Add to this China’s history of similar incidents. Even the deadly SARS virus has escaped — twice — from the Beijing lab where it was — and probably is — being used in experiments. Both “man-made” epidemics were quickly contained, but neither would have happened at all if proper safety precautions had been taken.

And then there is this little-known fact: Some Chinese researchers are in the habit of selling their laboratory animals to street vendors after they have finished experimenting on them.

You heard me right.

Hmm…

I think mendican hit the nail on the head. Why is the humboldt patient allowed to be at large when the other patients in the country who were positive but felt ok sent to the biocontainment unit in Nebraska? Why? There may be a good reason for the discrepancy but what is it? Also from my knowledge of St Joes, there is no place with WORSE infection controls so I would be surprised if they really handled this situation appropriately.

Humboldt County cannot afford to have the travelling/visiting/vacationing public made aware of the presence of CORONAVIRUS IN OUR COMMUNITY. The sole reason for keeping it secret is the MONEY to be lost-a lot of tourist money.
So let’s just keep it a secret, never be HONEST about it, and lie to the naïve travelers about our SAFE community. This is total BS and shows the evil coming from the DHHS, and the power players who control our County.
MONEY IS KING and any direct or indirect casualties are justified always.
Anyone find that white DHHS van yet?? Keep looking. This self quarantining is pure -ullshit!!!!!!
Its being reported that some recovering patients get a second round of infection and become carriers again. Just -ucking terrific!
GUEST- you mentioned a second (third?) person.More info?

Keeping it secret except for this blog, local TV news channels, local radio, Facebook, etc.

What do you need? A billboard put at the county line that reads: ” hurry, turn around and go back to your home and hid there until I tell you it’s safe!! You can’t trust the government or media, they are lying, so wait for my word!!

I hope you can get some fresh air today, relax and focus on something other than the DHHS and worry about everyone else. Your heart is in the right place. But 3 days of this obsessing on this blog can’t be good for ya.

Stressing out will only weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to illness.

Take care of yourself please.

Not sure. But second case confirmed. It being the associate of the first is likely, however, that was not what was disclosed. Nor was it disclosed if it was a second case in addition to the first case and the associated person awaiting test results, the assumption,(on your part as well as mine), being a third case in the event the associate is eventually confirmed, but hasn’t been, yet.
Only that there had been a second case confirmed.
Trust me, I asked.
But let’s not assume.
Two confirmed. A third would be speculative and unconfirmed.
However, I do consider both scenarios possible.
What will be interesting is how long it will take for this second case to be disclosed to the general public, either way.
I figure Monday at the soonest.
No location was disclosed in any case.

Anyone know if Arcata Airport is doing temperature scans of all the passengers in and out? This would be the appropriate policy and procedure now. However, you’d have to spend MONEY for staff and isolation units if someone did trigger a temp alarm.
Ah hell just ignore it all and life will go on-its too much trouble-isn’t it DHHS????

CDC caught lying? Costa Mesa files court document to block federal relocation of 35-50 INFECTED coronavirus patients to ill-prepared facility near millions of Californians

(Natural News) Until two days ago, the CDC’s “official” numbers claimed 15 infections in the United States. With the return of other infected evacuees from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, that number jumped to 35. But now, we know the real number is much higher, possibly as high as 70 infected people in the United States, thanks to a court document filed by the city of Costa Mesa, California.

That document, uncovered by Fox 5 News in San Diego, is shown below. It calls for a judicial decision to block the federal government’s attempt to move 35 – 50 infected patients from Travis Air Force Base to an ill-prepared isolation facility in Costa Mesa that’s near millions of people.

But the CDC’s “official” numbers claim there are only 13 infected patients in California to begin with. Let’s see if we can unravel the numbers here…
35 – 50 infected patients being urgently moved from Travis Air Force Base

The “statement of facts” section of the document warns that “35 – 50 patients already diagnosed with the Coronavirus” are about to be relocated from Travis Air Force Base to a facility in Costa Mesa. The lawsuit document then warns, “State officials demanded to know why local emergency personnel notified City leaders at all of the plan to produce people with a deadly and highly communicable disease into the community.”

Here’s what the lawsuit document says:

Statement of Facts:

Defendants intend to relocate from 35-50 patients already diagnosed with the Coronavirus from a secure location on Travis Air Force Base, where they are isolated from population centers, to Costa Mesa, a densely population city within a county of over 3 million. (Dempsey Decl. ??2, 6-7). And they plan to do so without first determining the suitability of the facility where the individuals will be housed. The Defendants’ plan was announced at the eleventh hour, with no efforts to include local government leaders or local public health officials. (Id.). Indeed, State officials demanded to know why local emergency personnel notified City leaders at all of the plan to introduce people with a deadly and highly communicable disease into the community.
