On Friday evening just after 7:30, Cal Fire received a report of a commercial structure fire in the 5400 block of Dows Prairie Road north of McKinleyville.

According to Cal Fire spokesperson, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Paul Savona, “The first units at scene found a 5000 square foot cannabis facility with heavy smoke showing. Crews were able to contain the fire and the cause is under investigation.”

At this point, Savona, who wasn’t on scene, said he doesn’t have information on how much of the building was damaged.

Another source tells us that a good portion of the building and its contents were saved.

Cal Fire, Westhaven Fire, Fieldbrook Fire, and Arcata Fire all assisted in putting out the fire.

Dows’s Prairie is still a nice place, but anywhere large home plots exist is going to have a few bad apples taking advantage of that acreage.

I surely agree. The value of land is tied to the number of people who value it. As the population grows so does the lands’ value, size and relevancy.

Cannabis prohibition and population pressures make the land more exclusively owned, The question of what will happen to our lands when we sell or die becomes more and more relevant .

It seems to me that establishing and nurturing Community in our neighborhoods is critical to our future well-being. And this may well be the moment in which we either stop and shake hands with our neighbors or blow the future of those who will follow us. All lands are bound by this Sacrament.

Pick a date (and rain date) for a neighborhood get it together. A simple potluck will do. Maybe out on The Road. Available. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Harvest, burn the greenhouse, report the crop to the state as a loss, sell the “lost” crop on the black market. I bet a lot of the robberies of permitted farms are the same scheme.

Why burn down your greenhouse? Just sell on the black market and replant. That’s what everyone else does.

More like poisoned by all the plastic going up in smoke. Guess you might get high from the toxins, kind of like sniffing glue. Not recommended.

Actually, I was driving north on 101 approaching Westhaven around 7:15 and it was raining pretty darn good for September. Didn’t see any lighting but you never know.

Works for me too if you are talking about the industrial scale greenhouses that look like they should be owned by the Sun Valley Bulb farm.
