[UPDATE 4 P.M.] Plane Crash in Arcata Slough

About 11:13 a.m., a plane crashed into the Fay Slough north of Eureka about 1/4 mile east of the runway of Murray Field where it is believed to have taken off.

Reports over the scanner indicate that one person is injured but that has not been confirmed.

One witness is trying to direct first responders to the scene. The first responder arriving on scene said over the scanner that it is a fixed wing aircraft “red in color.”

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

UPDATE 11:43 a.m.: Our reporter, Mark McKenna is at the scene and sent us this photo of first responders arriving at the scene and suiting up.

UPDATE 2:48 P.M.:

Press release from Humboldt Bay Fire:

On March 19th, 2020 at 11:14AM, Humboldt Bay Fire was dispatched to report of a plane crash in the area of Murray Field. Crews responded and attempted to make access through the rear of Harper Motors before successfully accessing the scene through the gate to the Faye Slough Wildlife area.

Two engine companies, Fish & Wildlife, and multiple Law Enforcement units from Eureka Police Department accessed the site of the crash approximately 3,000 feet from the runway. Crews found one patient, the pilot of the Ultra [Lite] one-seater, outside of the plane appearing largely uninjured. A Humboldt Bay Fire paramedic crossed the slough and assisted the patient back across the slough to awaiting HBF personnel who provided medical evaluation. The patient was transported to City Ambulance at the mouth of the Wildlife Area Access point, where he was evaluated further.

HBF would like to thank Eureka Police Department, California Highway Patrol, Humboldt County Airport Personnel, and City Ambulance for their partnership on scene.

HBF would like to take this opportunity to remind operators of all vehicles the importance of wearing a restraining device such as the 5-point harness that aided in the safety of the patient in this case.

Looks like an experimental aircraft. Think I saw it yesterday afternoon over the Bay. Any landing where the pilot survives is a good landing.

In the world of experimental aircraft, this is known as a flying lawn chair.

Any landing you can walk away from is a great landing. Glad it is hopefully no worse than it looks!

That looks less like a plane and more like an overgrown hang-glider. Most likely one of the slow flying ultra lights.

FOR SALE:
One red ultra light airplane, needs body work. Lost the desire to fly any more. Needs to be picked up from current location – will not deliver.

LOL
Correct, forgot about the interior. Along with said stain the seat also has a permanent pucker mark that may not fit you, so seat replacement is necessary.
Were you the potential buyer that looked at it today? 😂

A ladder makes a great short bridge, and your feet stay much drier.
